Great video Ran Day. I love how informative Dave from Edson Marine was, he shared an abundant amount of knowledge. I have only seen 2 sailors tie off their steering wheel while anchored. Makes sense to secure the steering. Looks like a guy could spend a lot of money real fast replacing the system. LOL 😂 If you don’t mind can you keep us informed about cost ?

Hugely informative Ran-day. Thank you. I'm guessing that a lot of sailors overlook steering checks and possibly don't know what to look for, if they do check their steering. Any stories I've seen on YT involving a steering loss, seem to end up with a 'game over' outcome. So, clearly this is a safety critical system and needs to be treated as such. Thanks again!

Just wanted to say thanks for the sharing your trials and tribulations in such a concise and informative manner. I really like your no frills no fill just the straight dope approach to your content, very informative without any hype. However if you ever decided to go with frills and fills just add some sexy swim wear shots of Capt Q posing on your sail boat, guarantied to go viral. Just think SI swim suit edition but with Capt Q, now that's some bait I'd click on. All kidding aside your doing a great job and thanks for taking your time to help share the knowledge. Please keep the episodes coming, I'm looking forward to learning vicariously through more of your experiences.

Outstanding episode. Very useful and well laid out. Applicable too. Earlier this spring, 35 miles off the coast of the Bahamas, our steering went out when the idler plate came apart (not Edson). As pointed out, having the auto helm connected directly to the quadrant was a life-saver, literally. Grateful for the GPS/autohelm accuracy. This episode will really help when inspecting my own boat.

Very interesting! My only observation; if it applies here, the cotter pins securing the sheaves are barely upset. I'd recommend a much more aggressive bend back (typically both legs twisted into a loop with needle nose pliers so the ends can't catch on something).
@gking55222 жыл бұрын
Nope Ron, they are as should be. Over bending causes failure. There should be nothing put in that space for the cotter pins to 'catch' on.

We can debate which oil to use but, IMHO everybody needs a Norvey Inc Zoom Spout bottle. It comes with "turbine oil" but, you can put what you want in it. It has a see thru tube you pull out about 8 inches long. It takes some patience but, most times you can get the end of the spout to make oil drop where you want it.

Thanks for this! I'll climb into my lazarette soon to review my setup. Smart of you to get out ahead of future troubles made more likely by an obsolete overly complex system. Steering failure is right up there with clogged diesel filters as my greatest fear in rough conditions. Among the many takeaways, I was interested to hear that oil is the preferred lubricant for the sheaves. Enjoyed meeting you both at the show yesterday.

Enjoyed the video. In describing the new auto pilot setup Dave suggested a new tiller arm above the quadrant. Once that is done, will there still be enough rudder post exposed, to attach your emergency tiller? If not I would consider mounting the tiller arm and ram, below the quadrant. All the best Jeff
@YachtHunters2 жыл бұрын
Good point… there should be enough room above… but we’ll definitely measure it up with the emergency tiller installed just to be sure. Too bad the tile weighs about 70lbs!!
