Stop Hurting Your Eyes! Here's 9 Habits You'll Want to Change Right Now…

We all have bad habits and unfortunately for many of us, we don’t even realize we are doing them! Here is a list of 9 bad habits that can ruin your eye health.
To take good care of your eye eyes and improve your eyesight, it is very important to eat healthily, protect your eyes from the outside elements (such as sunlight and harsh weather), and give your eyes a rest from continuous near work (such as staring at your phone and computer).
Also rubbing your eyes, not cleaning your eyelids and eyelashes, and abusing “get the red out drops” can all be a problem for your eyes.
If you have not had an eye exam within the last year, please schedule a visit with a local eye doctor to have your eyes evaluated for any health risks.
I hope you find this video helpful and please comment with any questions you have. I take all of your comments and questions seriously and I appreciate you. - Joseph Allen, OD FAAO, Dipl ABO

I personally try to avoid shocking my eyes at night with bright lights. I don’t know if this is actually harmful, but I really dislike waking up to bright lights. I have an early childhood memory of this. I think we were getting an early start on a day trip. I was woken up at about 4 am and couldn’t function at all - I was completely blinded. My older siblings told me not to worry that my eyes would adjust, but it felt like an eternity before I could get used to the lights and the experience was so unpleasant. I should add that I’m very fair, so maybe that’s why the sensitivity?

This is the 1st video of yours that I have watched. It was excellent. I have now subscribed & will continue watching from this point on. As someone who has worn glasses since age 6 & hard contact lenses since age 17 (I'm now 51); who is highly myopic (both eyes -22+) & has now developed cataracts in both eyes requiring surgery, I am embarrassed to admit that I am guilty of several of these bad habits, incl. sleeping in my lenses for up to a month, rubbing my eyes regularly, occasionally not wearing sunglasses & infrequent eye examinations. I will try & be better with this going forward. I am now in the process of researching cataract surgery here in Australia. Any updated advice, tips, cataract product recommendations (for use in Australia) that you may have would be greatly appreciated. I will begin by exploring your channel chronologically (starting with this video), before doing a more targeted dive into cataract surgery. Also, although perhaps unlikely, do you have any colleagues in Victoria, Australia that you would recommend for both eye care & surgery. Thanks in advance & sorry about the length of this comment.

Interesting video. Guilty as suggested. I worked on private yachts for twenty years and developed early signs of cataracts way too early from not wearing sunglasses for at least one year. I saw an eye doctor who told me to get the best pair of polarized prescription sunglasses I could afford. I bought a pair of Maui Jim’s that are gradually darker at the top and bottom of the lenses. This helped with the glare from the water as well as the brilliant white paint on the superstructure. My issue now is after 4 hours of screen time, I can’t focus while driving with or without my prescription glasses. Eventually, it sorts itself out. Perhaps when I’m online, listening to a podcast, I’ll make a point of looking at anything other than the screen.

I have had optic neuritis in both eyes due to multiple sclerosis. I also have dry eyes so occasionally use artificial tears. After waking up with no vision in my left eye at 18, (first MS symptom) I tend to look after my eyes. I see the optician (eye doctor) regularly, I have just been moved to check ups every 2 years. I am prescribed Loratidine for itchy eyes due to hay-fever. But as I live in the UK prescription charges aren't that expensive. I am short sighted and take my specs off to read. Though I do need photochromic lenses on my specs because I have problems with bright lights. I also have RAPD because of the optic neuritis. Thank you for this video, I found it useful

Hi! I have recently been diagnosed with mgd and feeling pretty sad about it. I work as a dancer so I feel very dependent on my contacts to be able to feel free while I dance. I can see that you have mgd, but also wear contacts. My question is-as long as I dont wear contacts too much, will wearing contacts affect the meibomian glands badly? Or make my eyes more dry? Feeling really unsure about this. Love your channel btw! ❤

I’ve always had good vision growing up, but since my job requires sitting in front of a computer screen for 8+ hours a day for the past 5 years…I finally took myself to an eye doctor after noticing I couldn’t read far text (like gas prices while driving past it)….came to find out that I have astigmatism on my left and I am nearsighted on my right 😅 I was so shocked when they put the new lenses on me to test it out and the text in front of were sooo clear and sharp, whoa! I’ve always thought my vision was still good hahahaha. So yeah, be sure to take breaks from the screen and see your eye doctor✌🏻🤓

Years ago, I recall a story in the news that the US Naval Academy had a problem with midshipmen who had 20/20 vision (as was then required) when they were admitted but no longer qualified when they were about to graduate. This was attributed to four years of intense study (books - this was before you could blame screens) causing eyestrain and nearsightedness. Their answer was to issue reading glasses to people who did not need them and whose eyes were perfectly capable of accommodation (young people 18 to 21) but whose eyes could expect to be called on to focus closely a great deal more than average. I have no idea if this is now taught in school for prospective eye doctors or if it has been debunked as bad science from the olden days but it makes sense to me. I (now 77) have special glassed for computer use and have had cratact surgery that ended any accommodation I might have once had. Is this still recommended for young people who must spend to much time doing close work? Should it be?

Thank you so much for sharing this! Right now, it is not common practice as there is little evidence to support it. But I have been working with our pediatric specialist to build out several videos on myopia and what the research says, so hopefully we will have a few deep dive videos on this in the early fall.

@friendoffriend1281
@friendoffriend1281 11 ай бұрын
@@skvlskyait, does that mean that when you use reading glasses (with + lenses) for close activities will slowly improve your vision and get rid of the myopia slowly? I'm -1.25 myopia. It's the opposite when you use - lenses for close activities and worse the myopia... This would be really smart ngl
@skvlsky
@skvlsky 10 ай бұрын
@@friendoffriend1281 yes, when you use - lenses for close activities it worse the myopia. I use + lenses for close up to protect my eyesight. Ciliary muscle tens up when you are spending a lot of time up close. Plus lenses just "move things further from me". And I can do active focus. I don't know if you believe me cuz I see a lot of sceptics on internet about this topic but it's working and it based on science. I'm talking about EndMyopia by Jake Steiner. I was reading some studies about how myopia begins etc, I found active focus thing by myself which shocked me. And year after that I found Jake Steiner's channel. Other methods were weird and I haven't seen any improvement. I watched couple of Jake's video and I was impressed by everything being consistent with all studies I read so I trused him. Personally I knew most of things before but for new people I recommend to watch his videos and checkout his blog endmyopia org :) Be prepared to loooong journey. Like I said before, I was -2 two years ago, now -1.1. But also my progress could be slower cuz I don't do everyhing he says.
@friendoffriend1281
@friendoffriend1281 10 ай бұрын
@@skvlskyThank you for your reply! I know about Endmyopia but I don't know if I would totally trust it... I found active focus too... watching the licenses plates across the street and could be able to clear the blur, BUT double vision occured 4 months ago... still struggling with it (also the lights at night are star shaped wich worries me a lot - they call it "transient astigmatism") but I don't know honestly if I would trust Endmyopia...

I live in a studio apartment and during the summer my eyes get more dry. I think its because I have to have fans going. I am guilty of not wearing sun glasses and rubbing my eyes sometimes.
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 11 ай бұрын
I have read a bunch on the NAC drops and even got a bottle myself to test how they felt (stung a little). There are some studies on animal eyes but not much on humans. I have my doubts about it based on the physiology, perhaps it does help slow things down but I doubt it will reverse cataracts. Hopefully with more studies, it could lead to something.

@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 11 ай бұрын
Welding flash can easily cause photokeratitis - the "sunburn" on the eye. Usually this is just painful and causes blurred vision for a few days as the surface heals. The strong UV and IR light from industrial sources can also cause different cataracts to form easier.

For example driving at night and someone is coming the other direction with very bright lights I see a circle of light afterwards . I have mentioned it to my eye doctor . They didn't say it was anything to be worried about but it is bothersome, I do have antiglare transition glasses. I really enjoy your content. What you talked about today I am guilty of to much screen time, not getting outside enough, using eyedrops often and rubbing my eyes to hard.

Nice. It's nice you do the reasonable recommendation of seeing your eye doctor (as we should see a few other doctors) for yearly check ups. Sadly countries where medicine is socialized like The Netherlands sometimes refuse that kind of service. Even with a referral experts do their best to kick you out and not see you again unless "you're sick already" (usually too late). Then, you have countries where you pay for medicine out of pocket, then you get better care, because you're paying for it. In the end, you get what you pay for, or less (it's not free in Europe, plus we pay more taxes). Sorry for the rant and thanks for the validation.

I understand, I have a standard work office so i'm on the computer 7-8 hours a day + watching tv after work, checking my phone etc, so I guess it can go up to 11 hours a day. The only think we can do is just take multiple breaks when we can

Does soaking in a bathtub or public onsen (a Japanese hot spring) with contacts count as showering in them? What about accidentally falling asleep for like 10 to 15 minutes on the couch, does that count as sleeping?

My eyes are constantly blurry, like they have Vaseline rubbed on them. They are also bloodshot and very dry. I have had cornea surgery in both eyes, but I still have this blurry vision. What causes this blurriness ?

I spend pretty much all day in front of screens. I definitely need to get out more. I was an eye rubbing fiend too, and it probably did have an effect on my eyes, as my vision started to get a tiny bit blurry over the past couple years and I just got glasses this year as a result. Very low prescription, less than -1 in both eyes and a -1.25 cylinder. I can see, but it's like there's a beauty filter on. XD I had to consciously stop myself from rubbing my eyes. I still do a little bit in the morning, but I use way less pressure and slower motions. Allergies, staring at screens, not getting enough sleep, it all adds up, but I've been much better about touching my eyes!

Dr . Allen, I thanks for your work . I am 17 and I have been suffering from dry eye for two years . Now I use almost all treatment methods that you recommended ( Omega-3, good sleep , blinking, physical activity, oil based drops and ointments , warm compresses , glasses against wind ) . I have lost about 40 % of meobian glands. Can I restore my glands ? You actually told a lot of about managing this disease , long term battle. I understand that is life long disease, but are there at least some studies that show that meobian glands can be grow back?
