I have moderate to severe dry eye. I take flax seed oil and fish oil which keep mine lubricated and no need to get prescription meds. I take one gel capsule of Flax seed at 1000mg and two gel caps of fish oil at 1,000mg each. For the flaxseed I buy from NOW and the premium fish oil is from Natures Way. Both can be ordered online.

I had terribly dry eyes but changed my diet about 6 years ago to low carb. My eyes used to sting even putting in drops because they were so dry. It solved my problem, and I wear contacts all day (I take them out at night). I think insulin resistance might be a contributing factor.

@@user-os9eh7nk7g The fish oil has slightly more benefits for heart and inflammation with active EPA and DHA omega-3. I read studies that favored ground flax seed, over the oil for blood pressure control. However the flaxseed oil still has alpha-linolenic acid omega-3, which breaks down during digestion and converts to DHA and EPA. So it gets there the long way around. 😊 PS you always want to check with a doctor or online for any drug interactions for either fish or flax oil, especially blood thinners, blood pressure meds.

@@user-os9eh7nk7gThe Omega 3 fat in flaxseeds and Flaxseed oil is alpha-linolenic acid, which our bodies convert into DHA like what's present in fish oil; I have dry eyes related to rosacea, and I add a tablespoon of ground flaxseeds to my breakfast cereal, which I've found helpful; plus I've also seen plant-based DHA supplements at my local health food store, which may agree with you better.

The RX is indeed expensive, but it’s also supposed to be corrective. I had an optometrist tell me I could use one caplet twice a day: just save the morning one for night. Of course that doesn’t work well when traveling but it can cut the costs in half. P.S. my dad was given the same advice with a different doc!

There’s also OCuSOFT eye cleaning foam, and the Bruder eye mask. The foam cleans away debris and oils. Keeping the eyelid closed, lightly scrub with finger tips and a light touch, all along the eyelash line both top and bottom. Then rinse off. It’s awesome because your eyes feel clean afterward. The mask gets heated up in the microwave for 20-30 seconds and you lay it on your closed eyes for 10 minutes, once or twice a day. The heat melts the natural oils that gather at the lash follicles and these oils help keep your eyes moist. The oils can get clogged and this contributes to your dryness. An air purifier (or more) in your home can also help.

I actually have the two tear ducts in my right eye plugged with something smaller than a grain of sand. Although one came out once and it felt like a shard of glass, probably because I was having trouble with my eye at the time. I had scar tissue on my cornea ulcerated, extremely painful giving me my first migraine for 4 days. My ulcerated scar was unheard of making it secondary, like you mentioned. There are actually two causes of dry eyes. The first is not enough tear production (which is addressed in this video), but the second is not enough oil being secreted from the small oil glands on your eyelids. This is called Meibomian Gland Disease (MGD). Without sufficient oil, the tear film evaporates too quickly leading to dry eyes. For the first type, there are prescription drugs such as Restasis to increase tear production. For the MGD, there’s no prescription drug, but symptoms are eased by taking Omega 3’s, using hot compresses on your eyes once a day and using preservative-free eye drops several times a day.

PUNCTAL plugs brought immediate relief to my dry eyes. It takes two seconds to be placed into the tear duct. I am being checked for Sjogren's which causes extreme dry eye. Recently my eye started to feel itchy, grainy and lights became very bright. That's when I knew my punctal plug came out. It was replaced and then I felt that dryness again. I guess it wasn't the right size of punctal plug, but once given the right size immediately the dry eye went away

This one hits home for me, I have dry eyes and I use prescription drops. Prescribed drops are extremely expensive and insurance pays the least amount for them! I've had cataract surgery on both eyes and my vision has improved greatly but it gets blurry when my eyes get too dry. I'm sure most of my dry eyes and mouth are from some medication I'm taking. I haven't heard about using a warm cloth over my eyes but I'm going to try it. People should be careful about what they put in their eyes. Remember the cheaper the product, the less it will truly help. Your eyes are precious and will give you the gift of sight! Thanks for sharing another great video!👍

The Bruder eye mask is great. You can hand wash it when you feel it’s dirty but I always keep it clean by using clean towels to transport it and underneath it while heating up in the microwave. Put overnight ointments in the eye after you use the mask to keep the mask clean. Also, pure birch xylitol gums or mints, or just straight crystals, helps you produce more saliva and protects your oral health.

Thanks for the tips! If they ever talk about oral health, I'll probably write a complete essay! After all the jaw surgeries, a very limited opening and difficulty chewing, I've had so many problems in my mouth and consequently have lost several teeth. And because of all the trouble I've had, I can't wear a standard denture and I'm having enough trouble with a partial. I'm working with an oral surgeon and a prosthodontist. Their hope is to place two implants and attach a permanent bridge if I can open enough for them to hammer the implants in. You have to have enough room just to get the implants secured in place. If that's successful, I should get the bridge next. I can't even open my mouth enough for the impressions, they have to use the pedo impression trays. I hope, some day, that I'll be able to eat like a normal person. I've had braces twice and arch bars after a jaw surgery and my jaws were wired shut (at Thanksgiving). It's a very long process before all the work is done. I guess this is the beginning of my essay.😉 I spent 11 years having surgeries, I have several crowns and even had a root canal (on my birthday). I'll spare you all of the details but I'm finally at a place where I have hope for a solution. I've had so many jaw surgeries that regular dental work doesn't bother me. I started using Biotene for my dry mouth. I don't chew gum very often because it wears out my jaws. I've heard lemon drops help with dry mouth but my jaws don't like citrus. I appreciate all the tips, I'm always looking for other things I can do. One day I'll be able to eat steak again (sorry Dr Weening).😘 Or take a bite of celery!☺️

@@ZaharaPL Hi Zahara, I started taking restasis quite a while ago. So it is hard to remember how soon after starting that I began to experience relief. But I seem to recall that full improvement took several months but I enjoyed some improvement almost right away. For example, I started during the dry, winter months when I would sometimes wake up and my eyelids would be "stuck" to my cornea. Opening my eyes would sometimes cause cornea irritation. No fun. That more extreme symptom disappeared relatively soon. A couple weeks at most. I hope this helps.

@@ZaharaPL That’s a good question. I can say the white part of my eyes are not red now unless the pollen levels where I live are extremely high. My eyes are definitely less reactive to pollen since taking Restasis. So I definitely have fewer of these periods where my eyes are red. I don’t know if this applies to your situation. But I hope my answer helps. And you are not bothering me at all with your questions. I am more than happy to help in whatever way I can.

I have recently had laser cataract surgery. Almost immediately post op, it feels like I have some sort of glutinous film on my eyes and around my eyelids...like a glue traced around framing the eyes. Vision is slightly blurry. In a followup with my eye specialist, hen(& also the technician) said I may have dry eyes. They recommended drops (which I have used, from.l them from my optometrist and recommended by my pharmacist. None have helped any more than my wiping around the lids with cool, clear water. Apparently this condition occurs after cataract surgery in some patients. However the condition then is more the actual drying of the eyes, restricting of tear ducts? Is this likely a chronic condition for which there is little or nothing that can be done?

Perhaps I'm crazy, but I've started consuming olive oil and noticed my dry eye has been mitigated. I use a high grade-one source olive oil because there are many radicals. I've also notice many other benefits consuming olive oil in the morning as well as a teaspoon before bed. I still use eye drops to relieve the occasional burning/irritation.

I just started using Serum tears and they have been wonderful. (I have ocular rosacea.) Everything else just seems to irritate my eyes more. I eliminated Restasis years ago, then recently tried a free sample of Xiidra which made my eyes feel worse. (I also take omega-3 capsules and use a Bruder mask. )
@nancyb1243
@nancyb1243 Ай бұрын
@@jenniford311 From what I understand ocular rosacea is a more specific term for dry eye. I have that too. I used ocular antibiotics which got it under control for a bit, but it doesn’t cure it. You can’t be on ocular antibiotics forever. Similarly, you can’t be on corticosteroid drops longterm. I have used everything you described but I have had relative success with Xiidra (failed on Restasis). I’m using Refresh Celluvisc with Systane Hydration PF about 6 times per day. Pataday XStrength once a day (ok, once in awhile twice a day during nasty spring allergy days; don’t tell anyone). Bruder mask was ineffective for me. I also use Ocusoft original eye wipes which require rinsing after use, once a day maybe twice a day now that it’s spring (pollen stuff). I use Muro 5% ointment at night in my left eye because my cornea is spreading apart (not sure of the medical term for it but I get what my doc is telling me). I use Refresh PM ointment in my right eye but darn, it’s unavailable due to a manufacturer supply problem so I’ve switched to Bausch and Lomb Soothe. It’s a 24/7 full time job. Glad I’m retired from my gainfully employed job as a retail pharmacist.

@@jenniford311 Also, I have been taking high quality high concentration fish oil caps for years. No real difference, but I keep taking them. I’m sure that staring at a computer screen for 12 hours per day for more than 35 years is my nemesis. Plus, I wore those plastic contacts lenses way back when. Ughh!
@nancyb1243

From what I understand, ocular rosacea is the formal term for “dry eye.” I have that too. Antibiotics take care of that but you can’t be on them longterm just like you can’t be on corticosteroid drops to reduce inflammation. I’ve been on both. I take high dose quality fish oil caps. I use Refresh Celluvisc and Systane Hydration PF drops about 6 times per day. I use Muro 5% ointment in my left eye and Refresh PM ointment in my right eye at bedtime although Refresh PM is currently unavailable in the marketplace. So I’m using Soothe ointment by Bausch and Lomb. Muro 5% helps keep my cornea “together” because I’m told dryness splits it apart. I’m really not sure of the medical term for this. Not happening in my right eye… yet. Serum drops are supposed to heal the splitting of my left eye’s cornea and prevent that in my right eye. I hope that’s true. Bruder mask and hot compresses have done nothing for me. I am a retired retail pharmacist. I looked at a computer screen for 35 years. Several of my colleagues are having the same symptoms I have, not to mention bowel and urinary problems from working 12-hour days with no breaks.

Very interesting I have an autoimmune condition called Connective tissue disease. My eyes are so dry I literally have to open my lids manually in the morning ,just to put the drops in. I’ve tried the gel at night but doesn’t last any longer than the drops which I also have to apply if I wake in the middle of the night. I do wear contacts daily disposals, as I hate my glasses but fortunately the company I buy them from have the choice of fluids they are kept in one of them is very moisturising and therefore my eyes are very comfortable during the day and no drops are needed.

For some convenience try keep a Q tip next to your bed. Remember when we used to have our noses swabed for Covid TESTING our eyes used to water excessively from nose mucosa irritation. I do the same every now and then insert Q tip inside my nose. Very irritating but will stimulate tear production naturally and for free

@@SheilaEnglish2 Oh my gosh, it’s really easy to do. The thought is worse than actually doing it, promise! Wash hands and make sure the ointment tube is clean (store it somewhere clean too), then squeeze ointment amount (according to directions) on pointer finger of your dominant hand, and use finger of non-dominant hand to pull the lower lid out from the middle whereby creating a pocket, wipe the ointment into the pocket (you shouldn’t be near the eyeball at all), and then blink. It will get blurry but that passes after blinking for a bit. Make sense?
