While "The Girl Next Door" (2007) is a deeply disturbing film it significantly reduces the level of abuse, neglect, and torture that Sylvia Likens experienced at the hands of Gertrude Baniszewski and her accomplices.
@kaaiitlin3 жыл бұрын
that's why i don't think real life cases like that should be made into movies. i understand movies 'taking inspiration' from real life events, but to try and glamorise the horror and torture that real people have gone through just feels icky and disrespectful. that's just my opinion of course, and i understand why others might disagree

Actually, Shelley Duvall did quite a bit after The Shining. She's best known for the children's "Faerie Tale Theatre" which was after The Shining. I don't know why people say she didn't do much after The Shining. It's not true. Whoever wrote the script for this segment should've done some research on Duvall. Whenever we talk about Stanley Kubrick, we should talk about his treatment of his actors. And he's far from the only Hollywood director / producer who has tormented their actors instead of helping them do their f*cking jobs. Martyrs, the original, is one of my top horror of all times. It is deep, psychological, and haunting. At it's core it is a very profound love story (everything was done by the main charterer out of love for her friend) and if you pay attention to the dialog, that gets very obvious. It is that subtle awareness that makes it go into darker depths. It doesn't go into standard horror fare, and allows the viewer to make of it what they wish.

@@mldrfan I mean 'better' as in the storytelling quality is much higher across the board. Jack Ketchum was an amazing (and prolific) horror writer with a solid reputation for good reason. Everything about it is more engrossing, so yes it definitely hits harder. There's an Author's Note at the end, I believe, and I highly recommend reading that too. He mentions the biggest creative liberty he took with the story and why he did it. His reason seriously endeared me to him both as a writer and a human.

Gonna be honest: My 13 year old niece gave out the house-phone number to a random guy she met on Minecraft who told her he was only 16. Of course the person she gave the number to called, and when her Dad answered the phone, the guy asking for her did not sound 16. To teach her a lesson in why not to give her personal information to people online, her parents had her watch "Megan is Missing" from start to finish, and she hasn't made that mistake again, since watching it.
@liafarcas79824 жыл бұрын
As horrifying and disturbing "Megan is Missing" is, it does have a moral story there. No matter how many times you tell kids nowadays or how much you try to keep them safe, some fall prey to predators. And honestly, in my opinion, the most vicious ones are hiding behind a screen and make kids share all the personal info and details they need in order to strike. So, I do think this movie can be used as an eye opener for some kids and teenagers, cause some refuse to listen or believe the internet can be dangerous (sure, tune down or skip the hardcore scenes). It's enough seeing Amy kidnapped, imprisoned and disposed of inside a barrel in the ground, never to be found again, without the brutal scenes, but the lesson is still learned.
@Astraeus..4 жыл бұрын
So....you're telling me that the best idea they could come up with to teach a CHILD some kind of valuable lesson was to completely fu@$ing traumatize her by forcing her to watch a movie about 2 girls being kidnapped, raped, murdered, and stuffed inside a barrel? That's some fu@ing sick parenting right there. People like that shouldn't even have kids in the first place.

@@TheRealNormanBates 1- I literally have no idea how "it's a movie" is even remotely acceptable as defense for showing something like that to a child. There are snuff porn movies too, doesn't exactly mean it's for kiddies. 2- There are better ways than traumatizing a kid to make them learn a lesson. If a kid plays with matches and you light them on fire, that'll probably make them stop playing with the fu@$ing matches but obviously it's a shitty way to go about it.

Also, I would add The Mist, Don't Breathe and Dr. Sleep. I know movies often want to shock the audience and follow the book source in order to do that. However, movies are more visual and sometimes more visceral than books and there is a point when you can go too far. It's my belief that horror movies should have one goal - to scare people. For instance, I'm not sure what sickos out there actually want to see a young boy being tortured and killed on screen like Dr. Sleep. ....then again, 2020 has revealed that we do in fact have a lot of sickos out there...
@billybyron77003 жыл бұрын
I honestly don’t understand why people have become so pressed about that scene in Doctor Sleep. Funnily enough I rewatched the movie today and because of the fact that not too much is shown and left to the imagination does help it’s case. Also along with the fact that the actor, Jacob Tremblay, was absolutely fine recording the scene really puts my mind at ease in terms of having to watch a child be killed. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me but that’s just my personal view
