9. In Hand Work - Haunches In Travers Down The Rail

The setup for this exercise is the same as for our other in hand work. Jack has already warmed Nisa up with some shoulder work, which is a great way to prepare for this exercise. Start off by getting the walk straight ahead and then you will slightly draw down with the hand that is holding the outside rein. Then he asks her hind to move away from him slightly. His focus here is keeping the neck long with a slight bend away from him while asking the hind to move away. Another way to think of it is keeping her head and shoulder parallel to the rail with a slight bend to the inside, while asking the hind to come off the rail a bit. The bend remains to the inside the entire time.

No the issue is not more engagement travers is not a collecting lateral, the problem is flexibility, travers is a suppling lateral that requires far more flexibility through the whole horse, shoulder in is only 3 tracks minimal bend, minimal flexion, travers is 4 tracks created by huge amount of bend and counter intuitive flexion. Shoulder in lightens the forehand placing the inside hind under the belly creating engagement and collection.
