You guys asked, and I will deliver! Highly requested video here. These are some of my favorite interior designers who inspire me every day. This is by no means a full list, but definitely some amazingly talented people who I think you will love. Sooo many more designers could be on this list, so comment and let me know who else you think I'd like!
Hope you're having a great day :)

i don't think there's anything wrong with masculine or feminine as descriptors. masculine doesn't have to be male, feminine doesn't have to be female, etc. i'm a woman but i like more masculine interior design

I agree! I think Masculinity and Femininity are salient concepts in our society, and when we use them we evoke a commonly conceived aesthetic. Yes they’re gendered terms but we don’t always have to use them that way, or assume that people have to be into one or the other depending on our gender. I’m non-binary and I love traditionally feminine colors but more masculine shapes and forms. It’s a fun combo!

Me too! I'm a bit of a "curated maximalist" (but not in the traditional sense)... I much prefer masculine design over feminine. I find myself browsing r/malelivingspace more than r/femalelivingspace. I just really prefer dark, moody spaces. (Nearly black walls, natural wood/wood grain, dark leathers, metals, etc.) I do love more feminine wallpaper designs though.

@@katieweaver2856 - good job explaining, I agree! I’m gender fluid & don’t think my or anyones gender ID has anything to do w/ what style home you like, it’s very simply aesthetics & whatever someone is attracted to. Mine leans masculine, maximalist, 95% vintage/antique. I’m in the process of redecorating even darker, moodier- just suits after the past 2 yrs of hell- house fire, death (not from fire), greed & assault as a result from the death. Just trying to get my life back, be happy while getting the house ready to sell & MOVE the heck back where we never should’ve left! Cheers!

The concept of masc and fem in a yin yang sense is beautiful and natural. It’s triggering to some because of oppressive ideology but the positive use of these terms in a non judgemental or restrictive way gives people space to move between them in a healthy way.

I think the "waiting for my forever home" is the issue of buying expensive pieces for the home you have NOW and then having to sell and not make your money back in order to them buy the item you actually wanted that fits in that dream space. I think there is value in not being too far to either extreme, whether it's over consuming trends and not curating 'forever' pieces or also 'compromising' and knowing when to wait vs throw too much money to temporary projects even those funds could go towards getting out off debt and home ownership Dave Ramsey style.
@ellaanvari7737
@ellaanvari7737 Жыл бұрын
I agree with some of what you said for sure but why can’t you use those pieces in a new place? For example, a beautiful rug, a credenza, a chair, etc could be used in any house. I have bought cheap thing and replaced a few times and then I’ve bought some higher quality solid pieces and I’ll keep them forever.
@idonotresidehere.5709

@@ellaanvari7737 That can be work for some but if you're moving far away then realistically you won't be able to take those pieces with you. When I moved I had to leave behind an important family heirloom bc the shipping was too expensive.

I loved the first one a1000xbetter, and the last one DIYer stefmtuner most. Both of their designs felt cozy and like a home. Most of the others felt more like house or showcase pieces, or museum/palace/ celebritiy antique-filled old, cold house designs. And thank you for sharing them with us.

Love checking in with you, you bring a calm over me I can't explain. Inspiration comes in many forms, your one of mine. On a serious note, the designers featured here were amazing. especially the English woman and the woman talking about ceilings. I too have over looked my ceilings as part of the over all finished look of my rooms, but recently put wood beams in the living room and an ornate pendant molding around my chandelier to bring the eye up. so that note of design really does work. It has transformed both spaces into a place I would never live without again. On a side note completely off topic, I loved your braids. Stay charming and real, much appreciation!!!

I like how you spoke about how the creative /design process means putting yourself out there even it doesn’t always look great. I find people really do “wait” to produce something that is “perfect” but in my opinion, it ends up looking really cookie-cutter. I love environments and pieces of art where you can almost see the process in the resolved product. I’ve just subscribed- I watched your “organisational video” and am hooked 💫

Today is one of my brother’s birthday. (The one who lives in DC). I sent him a cool concert ukulele this year. However, last year I’d sourced a pile of maybe 10 nearly antique travel brochures, maps etc from DC that we’re all from 1930-1935 (I think). I spent a couple hours in a very little very local antique shop pawing through 10s of thousands of post cards, scraps of paper, etc until I had a stack of maybe 25 things very local to him. (He’s in eckington area of DC). Then wittled the stack down to a reasonable number. I thought they were so neat to see prices of things then, familiar to him streets and landmarks and of course finding his now house on the different little maps. I love maps; the older the cooler. Anywho, it took more time than money. I bet it was less than $20 for the items I got him. It’s a unique gift but super personalized to him. It then makes awesome decor. One leaflet, when totally unfolded had a dc map on the back that he framed. I’m rambling, obviously. However, I bring it up because I’m thinking of him on his bday, but also tiny things like that can also really add to the personality of your home decor. Every bit as much as vases, lamps, etc. Anyway, great list. I took a screenshot of two that I plan on following.

Morning Caroline: Dang, it's 12:50 pm ... late start for coffee / breakfast and your Saturday morning show, but finally here (I happily look forward to my Saturday mornings here with you). Anywho - I too refer to the "masculine" and the "feminine" --- fine choices of words. My space has a dark (black & mahogany) masculine feel, but with very feminine gilded framed pieces of art re Erte, Gustaf Klimt & Michael Parks ~ just to name three adored artists. Love the blend / the ying & the yang. My step-Mom is a self-educated (non-degreed) interior decorator ... I grew up being so inspired and in awe of her. Later in my own spaces - over the years and at times, one of my favorite things to do in the evening is to pour a glass (or more) of wine and look at design books and Architectural Digest and such. I haven't gotten into the whole Instagram "thang" ... but perhaps I should put my big toe into the Instagram pool - 🌆

To answer one of your last questions on which of the designers I liked, I've got to be honest that none are really my personal style. What I've valued from your design videos is the way to find your own style, the ways to put together elements you like and create something cohesive, as well as non-style-specific design tips or lessons. The stuff that's agnostic to the specific design but the thought process, the decorating process. Really cool to hear you discussing why you like these designers though, way more specific than my usual of looking for the ~same vibes~

I love Julie Khuu work on youtube. She grew up with fengshui masters coming to her home. Her work on how to create your space reminds me your way talking about mess and how you use story of person creating space… sooo revolution I say… you become doing anything for yourself if you create opportunity… zen corner, fit corner, wellness/beauty/health corner, study area, laundry and cleaning arrangements so you love what you do, other rest areas - sleeping, napping… and all applicable to you even in tiny space. Tidy your home = tidy your head, sooo you can purge, update, detox, see, go through stages and again in same time your head is done equal… Anyway, Julie Khuu is maximalist, I do some of minimalist way, yet her work upgraded my life incredibly, her wisdom in examples and reasons, again, you and her soooo alike minds yet soooo different creators

You mentioned alternatievs to masculine/femine when describing designs and I usually use: masculine-darker, heavier, rustic, minimalistic, etc and for feminine- airy, light, soft, clean, etc. Focusing on the description of the pieces more so than who it's for. I make candles and I've had to learn that all the ones I would make specifically for women the guys usually liked and vice versa so it's definitely a challenge opening up descriptions sometimes lol Also! I love this laid back chat about different designers you like. I want to have these types of chats with friends but no one wants to listen to me ramble about stuff we can't afford 😅

I sometimes say yin and yang, with a hat tip to east Asian cultures for the concepts. Everything in the world is a mix of yin and yang, even if it's a tiny bit of salt (yang) which enhances the flavor of a dessert (yin) or a bit of sweet in a savory dish which does the opposite. The pendulum swing of design sways back and forth, too: art nouveau is quite yin and mid century more yang but I love them mixed together for this reason.

Aloha from Hawaii.🤙 While I agree that masculine and feminine aren't bad descriptors because they evoke tropes that are easily understood (with variations by culture), I also agree that they feel 'laden' or 'yoked' with potential for appearing insensitive, unaware, or limited. Bummer. If I had to replace the terms I would consider SUPPORTIVE (m) vs NURTURING (f). I think if I heard an interior designer say (while showing me images), "I really like this supportive style for your living room. The structured leather, the substantial millwork, and some architectural plants (think bird of paradise or mother-in-laws tongue) ... all give me a very clear vibe and that vibe is 'support.' Whatever you're in the mood to do, watch the game, take a nap, write a manifesto, take over the world, THIS room in THIS style supports you in conquering your goals. In contrast, I feel like the circular pattern in the floor tiles and this sweeping staircase here in the entry and barely separated from the living room demands a more nurturing style. Leafier plants (think wispy palms, wandering jade, or a variegated croton), flowing sheers (even if they aren't 'in the wind' per se), a delicately carved antique -or- organic sun-bleached table, and a floral or pastoral oil painting." I think I would adopt those words from the designer and use them, too. ALTERNATIVELY, I think SCULPTED (m) vs ORGANIC (f) also work. FIRM vs FLEXIBLE. HARD vs SOFT. RECTILINEAR vs CURVILINEAR. DISTINCT vs INTEGRATED. GEOMETRIC vs LIQUID. PRINT vs CURSIVE. BLOCK vs SCRIPT. ELEMENTAL vs AMOEBIC. Hahaha. I dare you to use the word amoebic to describe feminine! 🤣

Hi, I stumbled on one of your videos a week ago and immediately subscribed (I am a subscriber of only 2 channels and yours is my 2nd). Interior design is one of my passions and I love your designs. I learned a lot. I also enjoy your mix of contents. I am in tech as well and it is just so cool to find your channel. Love your video on quitting job. Please keep doing what you are doing. To me, you are a perfect human. PS. I rarely comment on KZbin but you are special.

I LOVED ALL the designers you reviewed here! And... it's ok to say 'masculine' and 'femenine'... these are ways to describe some interiors and I would also use these words... don't even apologize. Saludos from Mexico!

Really enjoyed this video. I'd never heard of any of those designers. Would love you to do more (designers). Yes to dates in the freezer !!! Been rewatching ur old videos n my heart broke for you when I saw Danny (I, too, parted with my dog as part of breakup of long term relationship and it still hurts 18 years later) 💔 Congrats on new sponsors. Hi from Australia 🇦🇺 xx

I'm shifting my design tastes to fit my lifestyle needs in my new home (starting from nothing) I'm not even taking my prized dinosaur bone. Anyway, my old style was traditional with heavy emphasis on natural elements and now I'm moving toward Japandi. These masculine designs are so intriguing, they might be the happy marriage of my through lines! Thank you for sharing!

i know you posted this a while ago, but if you're still looking for suggestions for alternatives to "masculine" and "feminine" for design, here's mine: Firstly, i think those words as style descriptors don't have as much meaning as other descriptors (such as mid-century, scandinavian, industrial, shabby chic, french country, art deco, etc). Even if the space doesn't fit into another existing style, using "masculine" and "feminine" doesn't actually provide too much information since every single person has a different perspective of what those words mean; and when we pay attention, the aspects we connect to those words are completely based on social constructs of what being a man and a woman is, even if not intentionally (we might describe a room as "masculine" if it has harder edges, colder tones, and as "feminine" if it has delicate patterns, warm colors, as examples), so we end up propagating those ideas subconsciously; and we can see how these things are connected because there are so many women who happily embrace liking "masculine" styles but we rarely see the opposite. Since they don't really work as design styles, try to identify what elements make you want to describe the space with one of those words, and use that as the one-word descriptor instead. Examples of words that can be used to describe the overall feel of a room: Sculptural, ornate, linear, contrasting, earthy, textured, geometric, organic, translucent, cozy, moody, airy, etc. Trying to find more descriptive words might even lead us to a deeper exploration of the space. And not everything needs to fit into a one-word style, as most awesome designs usually don't (including the ones you design). You ended up describing the rooms you used "masculine" for in more detail afterwards and it worked amazingly to give me an idea of what elements actually inspired you in them. Also i'm non-binary and this shit is hard as fuck for me too, there's a lot we're unlearning every day. i'm a new subscriber and really love your videos ~
