I noticed your dynamic mics were lower miking the resonant head, and your expensive condensers were picking up sound from higher on the head. I believe this makes for a subjective difference in the way the drum sounds.

Woa, really nice. To me the nice ones are Telefunken C12 (a $9000 mic!!!) Earworks SR30 and AT AE2500, I just got the latest for my collection for home studio covers drums videos, I also got an Audix D6 and an AKG D112 that I have been using at the batter and resonant heads respectively

I switched over from a Audix D6 on the inside and a dw moon mic on the outside to a Sennheiser e602 ii on the inside and a e902 on the outside. Great results for me. Pays to look up frequency charts to get an idea of what your trying to achieve.

I. am no expert on miking tecniques but I found that I like the sound better when the mic is placed on the other side , where the kick pedal is. Thanks for the no nonsense video :))

Thanks for the video, and for the very consistent drumming! Interesting to hear kick mic comparisons on a closed front head (most other kick mics comparison videos feature a front head with a hole, which of course is the most common situation). Two points of minor criticism however : 1) there seems to be a level mismatch in favor of the condenser and tube mics ; 2) covering the resonant head with stickers was probably not a great idea in this case as this would dampen harmonics, which are quite important in getting a great sound with a closed front head.

Just curious again, do you think having condensers that close is causing any damage over time, or changes (even if over a long time) to the capsules at all? That was what, about a hand length away? Hard to tell exactly. I recently mic'd a kick with a really expensive LDC, and had it about that far away, same as in your video, maybe a hair closer, and someone said I'm really beating on my capsule.

C12 baby, then close second U47, then the Earthworks. By far the worst one was the U87. All of the dynamics did their usual decent job with their own character.

implement the -10dB feature of the u87 and you're fine. Though I wouldn't put the mic where they put it and I'd move it out half a foot. It's sound is right in the pocket and distinctive in this video.

I prefer minimalist micing . I've seen Cat's use Subkicks with interior mics, I've seen interior mic, Subkick + a 57 on the outer shell I dunno all that seems like overkill to me , the AT 2500 is 2 mics in one and you can individually control the gain on each capsule. I use a Jim Williamson ( Audio Upgrades) modded Symetrix SX 202 mic pre because it has 2 individual inputs with gain control on each and a summed mono output. That signal path eliminates all phase issues and really nails the kick IMO. Less set up time also!

Audix D6 all day for price and audio very comparable to these. 57 too really. These high end $$$ mics are useless for kick micing. No hole in kick makes a HUGE difference too.
