Thank you for this great series of instructional videos. Could I ask if there is any practical benefit to have a chronograph that can measure the projectile speed at the target instead of just at the muzzle?
@hftshooter Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Not in terms of a single chrono I think. If you had two chronos, one measuring muzzle velocity and one measuring velocity at target for each shot, then you could calculate an accurate ballistic coefficient for your pellets.

Im using chairgun elite it is being updated regulary in fact it just got a new update a month or so ago. In my opinion it’s the best ballistic calc out there, it’s similar to strelok which i also own but chairgun just looks and feel better. This is on IOS (iphone) I have no idea if it’s available on any other platforms.

Hi, I think I saw you at the recent BRK day! Thanks for the good tip regarding scope height. Do you do this after you have zeroed the scope, or when the reticle is optically centred? Thanks.
@hftshooter4 ай бұрын
Hi Malcolm, if you're doing the tin foil test then probably best to do it after you've zeroed your scope. 👍

Great information. Hopefully you can answer a question for me. I am zeroed at 50 yards, shot a 100 yards and Mero calculations were way high. I adjusted to hit my target. I then changed my scope height setting from 2.66 inches to 5.50 inches to get hold over correct. Am I doing something wrong or is this normal to adjust scope height setting? Should I be changing another setting? If you have time, I would greatly appreciate your input. THX--Matt
@hftshooter8 ай бұрын
Hi Matt, as I understand it the crucial settings are scope height and ballistic coefficient. I would recommend using the tin foil method to find your exact scope height at the muzzle and measure your pellet drop at a set distance to determine a more accurate BC if you're using manufacturer figures. I'm zeroed at 25 yards and measure pellet drop at 50 yards. It sounds like you can shoot to 100 yards with your 50 yard zero so I would measure at 100 yards and use the Mero tool to work out your BC. Once you put the figures in Mero will match your results at 100 yards and calculate backwards for shorter ranges which should be closer to what you're experiencing. However, at the end of the day shooting on paper at different ranges is always going to give you the most accurate drops and aim points for your rifle. Hope that helps.

Great video, thank you, Iv'e had a look at downloading MERO V1.9.0 on my Windows 11 machine however my antivirus and windows is suggesting it's an unsafe program to run?! any thoughts on this, thank you.

Hi Michael, sometimes Windows can be a bit over-protective with installs. In this case it just doesn't recognise the software creator. If you click on the 'More info' link in the blue box a 'Run anyway' button will appear. I've used this program on a Win 10/11 PC for a long time without issue so it will be safe on your system. hope that helps.

Another question, for you’re HFT comps with your springer, do you use one of the computer programs or real life shooting to achieve your best range cards?
@hftshooter8 ай бұрын
I primarily use a paper target set at different ranges Martin. Check out my video number 8.
@martinsprout8468 ай бұрын
Again thanks. To be honest that was the approach I was going to take. I’m thinking the computer model approach is a bit general, nothing like using how your rifle, pellet work in the real world. PS Thanks for all the content you post, they are very informative, interesting and much appreciated for those of us just starting out in HFT.
@iamspartacus821911 ай бұрын
Need to ask you a question, with the furthest target at 45 yd’s in HFT, why did you do a pellet drop measurement at 50 yd’s?
@hftshooter11 ай бұрын
As I understand it, you get a more accurate ballistic coefficient calculation at 2x your zero range or more.

getting your sight height , do the scope turrets need to be centered ???
@hftshooter11 ай бұрын
No, the scope turrets do not affect sight height.
@rivit9010 ай бұрын
So it shouldn't make any difference if your using your scope crosshairs and the turrets are turned to maximum elevation or minimum elevation??
@jeffmccall801310 ай бұрын
@@rivit90 not as far as sight height is concerned. However, if you find yourself at turret limits there may be something wrong with your scope mounting?

Hi Jeff, brilliant piece of work which must have taken ages to put together, I am learning all the time. Not sure about the tin foil method, seems like a very "iffy" way of getting an accurate measurement. How did you discover that a simple mechanical measurement of the scope/barrel was incorrect? Using basic trigonometry, based on a 25 yard zero and a 45mm scope hight (hate mixing units) at the objective (Scope diameter + barrel diameter /2) + gap between top of barrel and bottom of scope) if the barrel sticks out 400mm beyond the scope then the difference in the trajectory lines would be 0.692mm which is nowhere near 5% and is within acceptable error. This is not criticism, just debate to find the best solutions 🙂
@hftshooter5 ай бұрын
The tin foil method is in no way iffy. Measuring at the muzzle is the most accurate figure. That's where the ballistics start. I learnt this from a respected source who's info I trust.
@fxpeter225 ай бұрын
@@hftshooter Please don't be offended. I am just trying to debate the method. Just stating it is right without any background doesn't work for me. Calculating is as near absolute as you will get with known dimensions. You didn't measure at the muzzel. You measured at an unstated dimention from the muzzel to the cardboard, you also hand held the rifle which could also lead to deviations and you measured to an estimated centre of the pellet hole. We are talking about small dimentions so very little room for error. If you would prefer that I didn't comment on your content just say and that will be that.
@jeffmccall80135 ай бұрын
@@fxpeter22 I'm not offended at all, please don't think that. I welcome all comments and questions. I'm not an expert and am just passing on this stuff as I learn it myself. I'm happy to be proved wrong at any time if I've picked up bad information. Unfortunately it's very easy to get misconstrued in a messaging app. If you check out my video number 45 from about 16:30 I cover the tin foil method in more detail. You should see that the muzzle is touching the paper target when I take the shot. I have read some compelling articles promoting this method and have also noted graphics in some ballistic apps that clearly show that sight height is measured at the muzzle for ballistic calculations. Still happy to be proved wrong if that's not the case and I would happily broadcast a correction from the channel. I encourage you to continue to challenge everything to get to the truth; a mantra to live by! Best wishes, Jeff.
