It's very interesting to see the other side of the coin. I'm actually looking for a back without side access. I never use it and very much dislike the idea of another zipper that decreases bag security. I also like having space for a water bottle and a tripod at the same time. Wish more bags would drop the side access altogether to be honest.

I used the original Douchebag “The backpack” for years. Such a quality, durable, good looking bag. I JUST switched to the Nomatic Peter McKinnon 25L. While I’m def happy with it.. I’ll hang on to my DB just in case though. As the exterior zippers getting stuck is a bummer that I run into as well. Also, whoever approved these huge side pockets should chill. They’re comically bad.

The lack of a side access pocket it’s the reason alone why I’m going with the Brevite Jumper, I know it’s not as a “techie” as that one but it’s exactly what I need. Thank you for you honest review.

Thanks for chiming in! I was offered a chance to review the Brevite Jumper but I passed because it seems small and flimsy. Maybe I was totally wrong. But also... my very first camera backpack (LowePro CompuRover AW) was built like a bigger stronger version of the brevite. Good style of bag. Come back and let us know what you think of the jumper! Cheers!

Thank you. I always appreciate honest reviews, it still looks to be a great bag but I too don't like the idea of setting a bag down on the ground. That's fine if there is a bench nearby but if you're in the city, on the sidewalk, it's awkward. Until now I have stuck to shoulder bags but I think I will go with the Peak Design 30L everyday back pack maybe.

That’s a good option for a bag that you wouldn’t need to set down. I just picked up a mindshift gear bag that is similar called the photocross. Will be testing it on some upcoming travels! Cheers!

Thanks for watching and dropping a note! I had that bag for awhile too and sold it because it was uncomfortable. (Got a video about it!) but it is a great bag otherwise. I’m headed out this weekend for a camping/filming project and taking the NYA-EVO Fjord 60L and pretty pumped about it. It’s very comfortable! Cheers!

@@KendrickDischCreative how is the NYA EVO? Do you have a review coming for that bag? I've been looking at that and the Atlas Athlete V2 after having similar issues with comfort. I considered the Peak Design bags for years but their uncomfortable straps (according to many reviews) are a deal breaker. Have you found any other bags worth considering?

@@bladerealm124 LOVE the nya-evo fjord 60L. I will do a review soon but I’ve just been swamped with work and some more urgent reviews. The most comfortable camera backpack I’ve worn and a ton of clever little design features. Definitely built for a more outdoorsy shooter. Some say it’s heavy but I haven’t found that to be the case.

Nice video with some good info! Regarding the first point: Apart from the fact that it was known before that there wouldn't be any side access, you could use a strap or even better: The PD Capture Clip to be more flexible when walking around. The problem with side access is always that you can't have a (usable) second pocket on that very side for a water bottle/tripod.

Yeah I def knew it didn’t have side access, my plan was to carry camera with peak design shoulder strap (which is a good strap and a good carry option) I just didn’t realize how much I would miss having quicker access to stuff inside the backpack. Thanks for watching!

Oh and one other note, the Shimoda Explore V2 (as shown in video) has side access plus water bottle pocket on the same side. So it is doable. But it is rare for a bag to have both.

@@KendrickDischCreative Yeah and I love my Action X50, but I meant the logic itself: if you put your water bottle in that side pocket you‘ll need to get it out before grabbing the cam through this very side pocket, at least in most cases I guess. An excellent review of this Nomatic shoulder bag! I was considering it as well, but as I agree with your need for side access, I am researching the WANDRD PRVKE, the PGYTECH OneMo V2, and possibly the LowePro ProTactic BP450 AW ll, but not sure if I'd need a larger bag for a mid-sized mirrorless kit with lenses no longer than a 70-300 f/4.5-5.6. Thanks again!

Fellow bag nerd here... Yep quick access is key. Lots of work. Big zipper on that bag is also a tough thing as if you can have things unzip heavily loaded zipped to the top. These look a lot like the ones they gave out in 2021 to all the speakers. Great review... love pockets, zippers ugg, you'd think better designed with what they charge for it. Straps don't look great either. Would like a belt too with access to filters or something to redistribute weight. Love Velcro everywhere... TTYL

A good video but, I've found the opposite in that top access is ideal for my mirrorless with a Shotgun mike on the hot shoe ready for instant access for video. I do own a Peak Design everyday bag and have for 3 years now, and have used it quite a lot. However in my haste to head to the next shot, I've left the side flaps open, the result being a broken lens, and one camera body taking a tumble. My fault, but it's too easy for this oversight to take place. It also doesn't have much room in it. The Peak Design bag is excellent, just be careful with it.
@KendrickDischCreative
@KendrickDischCreative Жыл бұрын
I think I rushed my explanation a bit on this video. I think what meant to say is that with an everyday bag, there’s a lot of stuff you need access to besides just the camera. So having more exterior access for things like sunglasses, hats, snacks, phone charger, etc is important. So I was using the top access for all that stuff and had the camera and lenses in the lower area (sometimes using the peak design strap and just wearing camera). I wish I could clarify that point a bit more because you are spot on with the top access for your use case!

Have the 35L PM bag and love it. Also, Love this bag, however, lack of a stash exterior pocket and useless (water bottle/tripod ) side access kills this bag. Looks like you're carrying a mini-Elephant from a distance. Too bad, maybe a V2 would address some of the issues you've highlighted.

While using the dividers is certainly an option, I feel like the PM bag was really built for flexibility using the cubes. Curious if you tried them at all? Obviously side access is a preference. I don’t like it but all good if you do. Clearly you knew that was not a feature of this bag. I prefer the quick access on the top. You can use the top as you had it or extend the loft area to use another section and make it bigger, which I often do. Not sure the bags you compared it to are really comparable. The first two were not really camera bags. I’ve heard a lot of really good things about the last one, but that was just a bigger bag so not directly comparable. At the end of the day all comes down to presence. Good that you tried the PM bag and was able to sell it so that you can use a bag you prefer. Thanks for the review and valid points you made on the downfalls of this bag.

Thanks for watching and leaving thoughts! Always appreciated. One quick note though is that each bag I held up is a camera bag. I did a review already on the think tank shapeshifter and have upcoming reviews of the Nya-Evo Fjord 36 and 60 (very comfortable!). And also the Shimoda Explore V2 35L. The truth is that I just love trying out bags and doing these types of videos gives me an excuse to buy them. It’s pretty easy to sell the ones I don’t think I’ll keep using and I keep the ones I end up loving. A bit of a collector I guess.

I have had side access bags and never use it. I love the back/top access since I always have one camera with a telephoto. The top access is ideal from all the bags Ive had. It's proof though there is no one "perfect bag.". I replace the sipper pulls to one's I can access with gloves on. Closest I came to one was the lowePro aw 450 but it has serious issues for me. Im giving the nomadic bags a go. We shall see.

I think my comments on the side access might have been a little heavy towards wanting side access but what I really meant was that there wasn't enough access to the camera kit overall... from the top (I was using top as a quick access pocket because there was no other quick access pocket) and so that meant taking the bag off was the only way to get to the camera. Not ideal for an everyday carry camera backpack. I'm not the biggest fan of the peak design everyday camera bag, but it nails quick access to the gear, which is kind of my biggest point I was trying to make. I think if they had just said this is a smaller version of the Nomatic Camera pack, that might have been a little more accurate. Anyway... different needs for different people! If you haven't already tried Shimoda or Nya-Evo they are worth a look!

Personally I love bags that don't have side access. Security is my main concern and I travel a lot through SE Asia so just knowing that the only way someone can get into my camera gear is through my back is a big plus. Also, manufacturers often make compromises in designing side access to where they put it on the wrong side for like half the population, and if you put it on both then you lose the ability to use the dividers to the fullest since you can't permanently affix anything to those opening doors- which often either feel too big for M4/3 and APSC users and too cramped or tight for anyone with a bigger body like the Z8 or have a battery grip on there.

I think this is a difficult solve. Don’t have a solution yet, but I did try the mindshift gear photocross backpack. Didn’t like it. I think wearing the camera with a shoulder strap is my most often employed technique for this. But ultimately I’m a bag nerd and will keep trying stuff! I have a large shimoda explore v2 and it’s great, so I was thinking maybe one of the smaller versions would be good. Or they have a new kickstarter coming out with a more urban focused bag, so maybe thats a winner! Always looking! Also Nomatic has a new bag line doing kickstarter, another PM collab, but this time, they put the side access back into the bag. I think they realized the error or omitting it on an everyday camera bag. What have you found for this type of carry?

This video makes me feel good because I decided against that bag two days ago 😂 for even more reasons than you mention. I also opted against Peak Design because all the reviews I watched prominently featured lenses and other stuff falling out of the pack when accessed from the side. I chose the NYA Evo Fjord 26 now in addition to the 60c I already have. No side access but great top access and lots of space in the front panel as well. It's on sale atm with a small camera insert for 129 Euros (half off basically) of anyone is interested.

That access was only one of the reasons it didn’t work out. When the camera is in the top pocket there’s no easy access to anything else at all. So I watched your video and it seems from the get-go that for your trip to Boston, you needed some thing with quicker camera access and not so much room for carrying a ton of equipment. I have to ask then, why didn’t you re-search this backpack in a way that would give you a better solution for this Boston trip. Seems to me that you could have taken the right type of pack for that purpose, Had you done adequate research before hand. I think most people would have to agree that creating a video that somewhat negates the actual purpose of a bag like this is really not necessary ! As I said, adequate research would have provided a solution that would be better for a day outing with just a camera, and maybe an additional lens. If carrying a ton of equipment on a greater extended outing for wildlife or camping Photo shoots, then this bag would be perfect for you and a second bag, perhaps for a day shoot in a town like Boston with just the camera in addition to the extensive bag would be a good choice! Research with camera gear is an important part of a Purchase made!
@KendrickDischCreative
@KendrickDischCreative 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. Yeah proper research is what this channel is all about. That’s why I make the videos. So people can watch and learn about what types of bags will help them with what they need. The quick access to camera was only one of the reasons I sold it. There were any others as stated in the video. I think the thing that we might be disagreeing about is the definition of an “everyday camera backpack”. I take it to mean it’s useful for carrying your camera around and accessing it when needed. So in my opinion, this bag isn’t landing in the upper echelon of bags to consider if your use case is like mine, despite the name of the bag. You are free to publish a video with your reasons for loving this bag and link it here and I’ll watch it! I’m a bag nerd and love seeing how people carry stuff around. So despite the fact that I buy tons of bags and do reviews of bags, i realize some people can’t afford to have more than one bag. So seeing different perspectives online is an important research tool. And just because you disagree with me about things doesn’t make my video unnecessary or not useful. Just like your video on the same bag isn’t unnecessary. It’s the aggregate of information that is useful.
