Nah! The purpose of the movement was to embrace our natural hair. Not to go natural and still make it look European. That's where most went wrong. I'm 4c and yes I need more moisture than most so.... Your video is doing just what you said everyone else is doing. That is...looking for a way to generate views, likes, and money. JS

I wish that I could “like” this video 100x because you spoke nothing but TRUTH. I got sucked into the whole DIY this,DIY that kick and spent a ton of money buying ish that did absolutely nothing for my hair and following the so-called “natural hair rules. My hair actually started thriving and growing like crazy when I stopped following all the natural hair gurus and falling for the next best, latest-n-greatest hype. This was a great video & tyfs the truth!

It’s so funny the sideways looks I get as a *professional* for not like the hair typing chart-like it invalidates my credentials. I tell my customers, I categorize hair by your hair density, texture(diameter,) porosity, and curl pattern. But you know treating my customers as individuals with individual needs means I must not know anything about hair. 🤷🏽‍♀️

The hair chart is just a guide. Everyone had different hair for different reasons. Not to mention the scalp!! Furthermore, there are people like me who have different types all over my head: tighter at the crown and looser on my sides and nape. and different levels of growth. the side grows fastest, the crown grows slowest, front and back nape in between growth levels. It is not one size fits all. I'm not even a professional but I've learned that about my hair and my family's hair. My aunt has thick coarse fast growing hair but you can't put that super relaxer on her because she has a super sensitive scalp to the point that she can't even have box braids. It's too painful for her.

This is long : I’ve definitely been suckered into doing plenty of the hair hack trends on KZbin. I started noticing, though, that the people that I watched were changing up their routines and cutting their hair or just going back to relaxers. One girl talked about getting alopecia and two others said they got some type of hair fungus. Watching natural hair tips was totally confusing on KZbin. A few months ago I said I was going to do a bunch of DIY treatments and do my own thing. I have a box full of Ayurvedic herbs and carrier oils for proof. I admit I wasn’t going to use any of those treatments properly. I was planning on slathering all those products on my scalp and hair for days on end, Green House Effect Baggy method and have wet soggy hair all day and night, finger de-tangle, deep condition my hair to death. I was going to go on another level of all of that because I thought that would be healthy for my hair and scalp. One day I researched taking care of my scalp and how to take care of my ends. I stumbled onto hair science videos and then came upon one of your videos Cyn. I was about to overdose and you was like, “what is you doing, gurl” 🤣🤣🤣. My hair is long but it’s very hot and dry where I am now. I’ve noticed a change in my hair since I’ve been in this climate, not for good. Come to find out I was causing all of the set backs trying to get my hair back to flourish mode. I have a friend who is a licensed cosmetologist and I saw where she is apart of a group, I forget the name, but basically it’s a group that promotes if you are going to give advice to people be licensed to talk about it correctly and offer professional services instead of leading people astray. It’s been going on for at least 2 years. I want to apologize to all licensed cosmetologists for all of us confused chicks out there who didn’t have a clue but thought we knew something. Keep educating Cyn… and hopefully more licensed professionals will step up and speak up. Keep going. We need this.

The first time I heard about the hair typing chart I said that is ridiculous and sounds like something I would have done back in the day when I worked in PR. Like you said when you separate you get a chance to have multiple customers. I did consider the co-washing for a second but then my chemistry major ex-husband's voice came into my head and said "don't look at the front of the product look at the back." He was wrong on a lot but not on that.

When i first went natural, There wasn't so much precedent on youtube so I read a book. That book was the curly girl handbook in 2009. For cleaning your hair or scalp, Lorraine Massey gives you two options, a conditioner or a Sulfate free botanical cleanser. Option 1 never worked for me So I always used a sulfate-free shampoo. No-where in her book does she say never use shampoo with surfactants. If I buy a co-wash now, I turn it around and make sure that it has surfactants in it! I saw the hair chart as a helpful guide and they never sold products on it originally. Now it's ballooned into every product has a hair type ( curl pattern type mainly) on it. I only use curl pattern for styling options but when actually dealing with hair care, I look at how dry or moisturised my hair feels, How strong or weak it feels, hair porosity, hair density and strand thickness. You can't tell that from a chart.

I just started watching your videos over the last week and it has truly been an eye opening experience because everything you say I have seen with my own eyes in myself and others. The most detrimental natural hair band wagon I jumped on was the whole no heat, curly cut/ delayed trims bandwagon. This caused me years of set backs. When I started to stretch my hair with heat it flourished. I never really got into the cowash thing thanks to a loctitian by the name of Damian Walter I happened upon some years ago. He was adamant about clarifying the hair and if an oil was used it better be a light, loose oil. I will add that I have suffered from an itchy, flaky scalp and had a habit of applying oil to my scalp. I definitely will stop doing this to see how it affects my scalp health. Lastly, I will say they may favorite natural hair KZbinrs have suffered one set back after another and most ended up at the salon getting a hair cut. Thanks for all you do.

Preach, Cyn! When I was in hair school, I asked my teacher about SLS free shampoo, she said it's bandwagon marketing. Opened my eyes to all the bs. Bandwagons change & fade. Cognitive dissonance kept me stuck in the "tore up head" state. School taught me better & I was still trying to do what I been doing all my life. smh even tho I KNEW BETTER. I had to admit, I HATED MY HAIR! Why??? I didn't know what to do with it cuz it was fine, overly curly/kinky, high porosity, & bleach/color damage. I decided to loc my hair a lil while after hair school. BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION EVER: Cuz I loc'd my hair I wouldn't have those problems. 😭 Even in locs, hair & scalp composition make up MATTERS! Back to basics, I went. I often wonder if I knew what I know now how healthy & long my hair would be! Can't cry over spilled milk... I have accepted my calling. Helping those where I was. Sometimes, admitting we don't like something about ourselves is hard ESPECIALLY when you're doing NOTHING to change it or make it better.

The hair type system is some BS. When I was learning to take care of my hair, people around me would tell me that my hair was “nappy” and “resistant” so I started followed these 4C “tutorials” and slathering my hair with all kinds of products. Later, a stylist pointed out that most of those KZbin gurus have thick, coarse hair, and while I also have a tight curl pattern, my hair is fine and fluffy. It doesn’t need a lot of product, it doesn’t need a lot of manipulation and the reason my scalp is irritated and my face is broken out is because I’ve been covering my fluffy soft hair with a bunch of stuff that’s WAY too heavy. She also pointed out fine hair gets build up fast and that I was destroying my hair following these dummies online who told me I needed to not use shampoo and only wash my hair every two months. Anyways, now I literally use like 5 products on my hair: a shampoo, a conditioner, a leave in, a moisturizer and a little bit of sweet almond oil. I’m still working on trying to find a routine that works for my schedule and a good stylist that can work with me, but my hair is a MILLION times better than it’s ever since I was a kid 🙌🏾 Edit: my goals are to figure out how to get a routine that works for my schedule. I don’t care about length anymore, I’m over it. I just want hair that’s healthy and doesn’t take 16 hours to do. I’m a busy professional. I don’t have time for a wash *day*. If I could get it down to like a wash *hour* or two, It would change my life (no cap)

I’ve never been a huge hair person, liked what I liked, and never got into the hair wars with the natural communities. Inside I always thought it was another way to divide folks plus the judging. My hair is healthy because I’ve always went to a professional stylist to maintain my hair. I never minded the cost plus I only want to maintain my hair. I’m NOT spending hours doing my hair, too much! It was like folks had to commit to this weekly hair ache just to be part of the natural community. I realized they had went too far when they went beyond the hair typing nonsense to trying to further divide the community by referring to folks like me as straight natural like it was something to be ashamed🙄 or didn’t have the intestinal fortitude to handle the workload of hair care. I thought the biggest difference in the hair community was relaxed and unrelaxed. That’s simple. This just created more division, you hit the nail on the head, division and separation! WE are a community by ourselves regardless of our hair!! The co-wash trend was ridiculous! Hair needs to be washed, not wet and conditioned. I tried it once and it made my hair feel dirty and it wasn’t bouncy. One time was enough for me. Thank you for the knowledge drop❤

And these companies are laughing their asses off, all the way to the bank with our hard earned money. I'm going in my basement this weekend, and I'm going to sought through all these products. I'm throwing out all the ones I don't use anymore, and keep the ones that actually work. It's going to be a helluva long time before I hand over anymore of my cash to purchase hair products. Accountability is a hell of a word, and yet an even harder action to practice. Real talk, I did a LOT of the methods in the natural hair movement. Rice water was the WORSE. But even after I stopped all those gimmicks there were moments I noticed hair growth, and periods of extreme hair loss. I am starting to realize the issue was me. Whether I do these gimmicks, stay away from heat, etc I can’t expect healthy hair/scalp let alone growth if I refuse to drink plenty of water and don’t want to improve my own diet and exercise. Can’t complain about raggedy ends if I don’t trim my hair like “never” and drink too much alcohol and stress out. I tend to always notice healthier hair/growth when I do trims, improve my diet, manage my stress, and cut back on hair products. At the end of the day, you can kick all the knowledge, but it won’t amount to anything if I don’t stop my own lazy habits and routines. As a new subscriber, I appreciate you, your honesty, and expertise. You are 💯 the truth!!! Looks like I need to revisit the habits that were working and take effin accountability. Long road ahead but we’ll worth it for overall better health from head to toe!

Cyn Gurl. I love you girl. I love this video. I was getting so tired of the natural hair videos because honestly they did not know anything about doing hair. All of these products going in their at once and I'm like do it take all of that for a hairstyle? And what really made me stop watching them was when they started using the just for me perms on their hair and their hair started looking like hay because they did not know what the hell they were doing!!!

I must admit I jumped on the no sulfate train, but I never co washed. Something inside me said that was dumb. However, my hair has grown 5 inches since January and is Mid back length, so I'm doing something right. And I agree with the marketing tactics of these companies taking advantage of us. But I guess all marketers do that with ANY product. Good video 👍 The guy who invented the hair typing system said he did it for his own personal usage, the natural hair community just ran with it and ultimately caused division.

The whole point of me going natural was so I didn't feel like I had to have whole product lines!! I used to have the whole Motions or Keracare product lines with my relaxed hair back in the early 00s. Confirmation for me was when I travelled to a remote reserve in Madagascar with only a backpack and the locals were able to just do my hair with some coconut oil. I like and need my life to be simple. Not sitting in the salon for 5 hours or doing my own natural hair at home for 5 hours.

Ok, you have my attention. My issue is wash day, which takes about 10 hours, because I've primarily relied on wash and go's, but they leave my hair a tangled mess after a few days(they don't work for my hair), so I've been doing two strand twist, and it literally takes all day and into the night. I've seriously thought about relaxing again. Also, I've been relaxer free for two and a half years. By the way, I knew hair typing was BS. My hair goal is to have healthy hair, and I know the length will come. A couple months ago, I purged so many of the content creators I followed because I realized, they're just regular people who have become adept at doing their OWN hair. I need help with learning how to properly moisturize, seal, and ways to create styles that are beneficial to my hair, and also how to minimize the knots and tangles. My hair also tends to be on the dry side. Thank you for your video. I subscribed after watching, because you made so much sense, and I look forward to your next videos. Sorry for such a long post.

@@tredd234 I literally put leave-in conditioner in my hair every day. Now this was recommended to me by my trichologists. I'm not saying that you should do this. I'm saying you have to learn your own hair and scalp type and not follow all of these "so-called rules" Also my trichologist has me putting my hair in 2 or 3 french braids and calling it a day. Literally, take 5-10 minutes daily and stops my hair from drying out completely and keeps it stretched to minimise tangles. I also detangle my hair weekly with detangler not water and conditioner in the shower. Cyn has videos on detangling natural hair. If my trichologists and my stylist can do my hair in an hour, I don't see why I should take 10 hours to do my hair.

@@tredd234 thanks. Definitely do your own research and pay attention to what your scalp and hair are doing. A good example I go to an Aveda Salon. They use salon quality "non-ethnic" divided products. They used a shampoo on my scalp that immediately made it burn and itch. I told my stylist and he switched to a different shampoo. Sometimes what everyone else uses, you own physiology cannot tolerate. I can't put suncream/lotion around my eyes and lips so I use a stick form of SPF for those more sensitive areas. Some people are sensitive to the fragrance in products so even though their hair and scalp like it, it gives them a migraine. My trichologists made hypoallergenic products with no fragrance for this reason. They literally only make 5 types of products. Shampoo, deep conditioner, scalp product leave in detangler and leave in conditioner. They do not keep coming out with new products like brands do! No rice water, baking soda, henna apple cider nothing. They do not even belive in sttlyling products. They tell their clients to style with the leave ins. Their opinions might not work for everyone but for me my scalp and hair are healthy and I have all of my edges and no bald patches and I attribute that to them. You can't always do what everyone is doing because we are all unique.

Then moisturize, oil, heat protestant, and blow dry. For my daughter this is where I style her for me flatiron and wrap done. 1-2 hrs each depending on the style. I went natural at 16 and never turned back to perms. I keep it real basic. I'm going to keep it even more basic since we're in a recession. I don't wear weaves or wigs or anything So when my hair started thinning it was because I wasn't taking care of myself internally. I was so fixated on working and graduating that I stop getting proper sleep, I was eating poorly and I was not taking any vitamins or minerals. So my hair literally broke off and thinned. 80 % of my hair is back. I take care of myself now, I make it a priority.

Crazy how I pretty much took accountability and gave up on team natural back in 2018. I realized that it was causing division and felt like a high school bullying tactic (you can’t sit at our table)🤣 also, my hair is unique and doesn’t fit the trends of what is being saying on KZbin. I embraced my hair, stopped with all the products and literally use 3 products now grease for my scalp, leave in conditioner and an oil to seal my ends. I do what my hair likes and what’s beautiful to me. Once I stopped feeling insecure about my hair and how it grows and stopped chasing others journeys I feel better and happier. The only time I watch a hair video now is on reviews of a wig I might want to buy or a braid style I might want to try. I do give props for the videos that helped me master some styles that I learned how to do (twist outs-my fav) I have no shirt or long term goals anymore it’s too much pressure mentally 🤷🏾‍♀️my overall thing is that my hair is healthy, and my scalp is healthy. Glad the algorithm allowed ur video through, probably because I was just watching a parting hair video for a box braid style I did on my daughter’s hair over the weekend. Thank you for this video😊🌸

I already knew/know that I caused my hair issues. I actually went natural long before YT damn near. I would shave my head just because. My main issue was lack of basic care for my hair. I stopped relaxers because of migraines allergies, and maintenance. Remember I was not caring for my hair. Started making my own hair and skin products and saw that my asthma, allergies, migraines, eczema, and other ish cleared up. I even made my own laundry detergent. (With prices what they are I need to start doing that again.) When I really started watching YT I admit that I did that ACV Bullshit. Now...shit I do what I did in the beginning. I research and create my own hypothesis. I want healthy hair and to get there I need whole body wellness. I know that my health issues also attribute to breakage and thinning. For whole body wellness I need to eat from the earth. More fruits veggies and omega 3's. Healing needs to start from the inside out with appropriate foods and herbs, also exercise. Been working on it for awhile. Not where I want to be but I am getting there.

I used to put food in my hair thinking it would actually do something. Those banana, avocado, onion mixes did nothing but waste my money, time and perfectly good ingredients. Now, I eat that food rather than slather it on my hair because I know my BODY has to break down that food, my hair follicles will not extract microscopic vitamins and absorb it into my hair...smh. Also, I just straight up stopped buying a ton of products. I have quality shampoo and deep conditioners with the right type of oil for my low porosity hair, now making my hair predictable, and manageable and even if I skip a day of maintenance, my hair will be just fine.

17:46 Why do black women need a community? I thought the hair was different from everyone else's and therefor needed to be handled differently thus why they needed a community but if you say they don't then I guess it's true.

No every race has different features that need to be handled differently. You can learn the science of your hair and take care of it yourself alone. You do not need a community to do your hair.

I go to an Aveda Salon and they treat my natural hair just fine. It's 4c for reference guide...not gospel. They do not use 4c in their salon.

I've been in the natural hair community for 3 years. Recently my scalp has been feeling really weak and I never seemed to figure out why and this video has saved me. Ive been using sulfate free shampoo for those 3 years and you've made me realize that because of this there has been product building up on my hair constantly. Currently I cant even touch my scalp lightly because it hurts like hell. I will try to use sulfate shampoo from now on and see if it does a difference to my scalp. Ive tried EVERYTHING. I even used a clarifying sulfate free shampoo and even like that my scalp hurts. If there is a solution to this I would really appreciate if I got some advice because it just keeps getting worse and worse.

Check my testimonials, there are so many women just like you that have changed everything in less than 7 days. Check the description box.
