Yep, disagree with the braces....its often necessary- proper alignment affects the ability to chew properly and poor alignment can also mean you are putting extra force on the other teeth which can lead to lots of problems. As a dental professional I have also seen some really poor teeth,,,,this can also affect mental health

Not to mention the fact, that good and relatively straight teeth can make peoples first impression of you just better. I'd want that for my kid. Because it can be little things, that tip the scales in whether or not you get the appartment/job/whatever. If possible, i think making teeth a priority is a good idea

I agree and disagree, like I agree with your points. However there are some people that do pay their bills but they have just enough, so like them adding a braces bill for minor crooked teeth not necessary even if that means saving to have them later. If it's truly a health issue then ya budget for it but I think she's talking more on side of strictly cosmetic things doesn't need to be prioritized also from what we've seen of her kids their teeth all seem very healthy so even if not intentional she could have her own perceived you don't need that my kids don't have perfect teeth or braces and they're fine 🤷♀️ definitely don't think you can just say braces not necessary as a blanket statement. Moreso every small cosmetic thing doesn't need to be priority if money tight enough that saving isn't happening at all because then the smallest thing can literally cripple you financially

Braces can be necessary at times. One of my daughters had teeth growing in the through the top roof of her mouth, another coming in backwards. Even the orthodontist said hmm this one’s a different challenge. Now my oldest, had one or two slightly off teeth, so she did not absolutely need them. It just depends on the child.
@FrugalFitMom Жыл бұрын
Very true, some cases they are needed!

Agreed, my mom had full dentures by 45 because she didn't get braces as a teen. Her mom & brother that didn't have them also needed dentures, her one brother that braces had all his teeth when he died in his 60's. I guess you could say paying for them in early adult years (or dealing with dentures) is their problem but that feels kind of cruel & that it really is a necessity in teen years.
@atlantisreborn145 Жыл бұрын
I was going to say the same thing @lifebeyondthenest3827. My son had teeth coming in on top of other teeth. He would have had an abscess or lost his adult teeth if we just pulled them. Thankfully we got 3 quotes and only 1 Ortho said they could move things around and save his teeth 🙌

My dentist decided I didn’t need them when I was a teen but I’m now having to get them in my 30’s because not having them has made my front bottom teeth wear down so if you don’t pay for them, your kids will often have to spend far more as adults dealing with the consequences of not having them when they are young.

Yes! I had severe overcrowding and I looked like I had fangs (eyeteeth) I needed 4 teeth pulled before I got my braces. I was so self conscious about how I looked. I'm forever grateful my mom got them for me.

Braces are necessary because they impact your future work and romantic prospects. And your kids never asked to be born so the least you can do is address what genetic issues you can (vision, dental, medical). Like others have said it often corrects mouth issues that can lead to more dental bills as adults.
@Jackie_W82 Жыл бұрын
Braces were most definitely a necessity for me with only four teeth that touched and all those molars needing crowns from grinding. With regards to fast food, not only is it more than you would spend to cook on your own and less healthy, but it's also really not that fast. You could make a 30 minute meal or something in the Crockpot to last a whole week (depending on the size of your family), and honestly it wouldn't take much more time than it does waiting in the drive-thru.

For me and my family, something that makes saving harder is turning 'sometimes' splurges into habits. Like 'sometimes' getting pizzas and fried chicken as a meal, to getting it about once a week. It really adds up. I think it really helps to keep your receipts and go over what you bought and what you spent for it. This also helps you to remember product prices so you can identify better deals later. And not finding anything good from a thrift store?? They ain't really looking. My whole current wardrobe is goodwill.

I have to disagree with braces. I would have been highly made fun of & my cousin already was too before braces. She had extra k9s & not enough room. My parents adopted her & sister. I had a huge overbite. My brother in law needed braces, then immediately jaw surgery to be able to close his jaw. Sister in law has crossbite. She needed them longer than she had. Our son may need them to make room for his abnormally large teeth. Yay genetics! Also a friend of ours sister had braces before being able to have jaw surgery right b4 turning 18. Before that some foods had to be blended including chicken soup. She struggled to eat normally. Braces are usually a requirement b4 jaw surgery. I'm not going to let my kid be made fun of for something I can change. I'd get a second job temporarily to pay for his braces over that personally.

My husband and I share a credit union account, but we also have individual accounts and split the bills. Since he has been out sole income for many years, now, he transfers a lump sum into my account every month and I pay my part of our bills and I spend whatever is left or budget it into saving up for things I want that might be a little more than I have at the moment and still have a safety net. If the bills are a bit more, or if I'm running low on funds, we look at the budget and make it work, but usually, this method keeps us both paying close attention to what we're spending and has worked really well for us.

She doesn’t go home, shower, get her hair and makeup done and then dress like she’s going to an award show to grab some chicken, fruit and veggies. When it comes to braces, I desperately needed them, massively crooked teeth and excruciating pain, but my family could not afford them even with the financial assistance program that was available at the time. I was the youngest child out of four being raised by a single mom. So, my dentist offered a different solution. He removed 8 of my teeth. That almost completely took care of the situation. Most importantly all of the pain and bleeding went away! Now as an adult only two of my bottom teeth are slightly crooked and the rest of my teeth spread out and filled in the gaps. When I go to a new dentist now they always remark I must have had braces as a kid, nope had a bunch of teeth removed. I feel I have a beautiful smile and in the long run the solution the dentist gave saved my mom a lot of stress and financial pain. While braces may not be extremely important in the long run, in certain situations they are medically necessary and not just for looks. My point is that our dentist listened to us and worked with us to find a fix. If needed please find a dentist who will listen to all your concerns, including financial hardships.

My teenagers expenses came in the form of shoes, performance clothes & camps - dance, pageants, band, show choir, track, tennis, cheerleading, football, baseball, basketball all day long - 2 pr of shoes a season all through college. The only reason I worked was to cover the kids expenses. With all of that activity there was an amazing amount of food consumption. I had to be creative & healthy. We were a block away from our HS & I fed a lot of kids. I will never regret it. We stayed in budget. Our son is back home after college - this economy doesn’t allow for anyone to buy or even rent. We invested in a device with an app and checked out what our electric was being used on and realized our ventilation system was sucking it up (literally) so we invested in a new one and within a year it will pay for itself. During the pandemic I learned how to cut my husband and son's hair and now I save a lot by doing it myself. We have invested in nice walking shoes and take walks in nature vs going places that cost money. I rarely buy clothes for myself and I often buy some things for my kids a bit bigger so they can grow into it and I never turn down hand me downs from cousins. We buy sale items at the store, etc. We do splurge on travel but I need to buy expensive plane tickets to see my family.

I actually did need orthodontic work for medical reasons. The roof of my mouth was way too narrow and high, so I couldn't breathe through my nose. An orthodontist was able to expand it which also helped lower it so I could get some air through my nose. That also helped significantly reduce the number of sinus infections serious enough to require antibiotics each year. Braces also made it so my molars now touch in more that one small place so I can actually chew food with my molars now.

@@maryt8600 I do, my brother just doesn't understand at all, he doesn't have the capacity to. My mom does get it, and she works with me, but I feel like I am punishing her if she asks for something and I tell her we have already spent the money and put the other up for the emergency fund, and she says ok, but I can tell in her voice she is sad, it makes me feel so bad. Of course, she is not trying to make me feel bad, I just do. It is just so tricky that it sometimes gets me down and don't even want to budget or save.

Christine, you and your family are a real scream! Y’all are genuinely funny. I heart the whole bunch of you. Great tips and I will try (and probably fail at the majority) to employ some of these.🤞🏾Thanks so much for sharing.

So I'm almost 50. My boyfriend and I are talking about spending habits. He is 63. I'm a saver. He's a spender. Is there any advise about how to build a life together when he is already retired?

I followed the Tightwad Gazette back when it was a monthly newsletter mailed to your home in the late 80s. I still follow many of Amy's suggestions. But yours are more my style now.

I have the Complete Tightwad Gazette. I've read all 900+ pages twice and I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say Amy's lessons in proud frugality changed my life.

Braces can be necessary to fix structural issues and prevent dental decay later in life. My son decided he didn't want braces and I was like ok it's your face. After a few years our dentist was like hey....if he doesn't get this bite issue addressed, he's going to have major dental and jaw issues as an adult. Different than fixing spaces or a crooked tooth, which is completely unnecessary to fix.

I own all of Amy’s Books and have referred to them during many times in our life when we needed to frugal. After reading them for the first time, I have looked at saving money in a very different way. I always hoped that she would write new books. Some of the ideas did not apply to me, but there were so many that still apply! The books are definitely are not items I will declutter even after all of these years.

I loved the Tightwad Gazette! I found them when we lived in East Africa… it made so much sense that Americans needed to learn to live with less… I am 58 if age figures into my opinions!

Enjoy your videos! All the time I was growing up, I thought I hated asparagus. I knew it! No question in my mind at all. Several decades later, somebody tells me that I could actually eat asparagus raw! My mom never served it raw. For all I knew it was poisonous raw. I tried it raw, and it’s now a favorite vegetable…. When your son specified that, he wasn’t really thrilled with asparagus, I wondered… Does he know you can eat it raw and it’s delicious? It’s not poisonous at all! If you’ve only served steamed, try serving it raw and see if he likes it that way…

I just changed jobs. Going from a weekly to biweekly paycheck, and it's been an adjustment with my spending. Just...knocking my budget off balance. Urgh! BUT....I am MUCH happier and LESS stressed now!! ❤🎉 I just need to readjust my budget to fit.

I used to spend money as fast as I earned it, but my husband is more frugal and I learned to be as well. We looked at the actual numbers and made a goal to use the snowball method to eliminate our student loan debt (which we were able to accomplish). The keys to me succeeding in money saving were to have specific goals and regularly measure our progress towards them, and to have the ultimate goals (having kids and being able to buy a house) be more motivating than the instant gratification of shopping.

I agree that sometime braces are a necessity, like they are for one of my kids. BUT you should definitely shop around. Got an assessment from an ortho 4 years ago: both kids in braces, multiple extractions, headgear and a palette expander. Then the pandemic hit and we hit the pause button. Four years later, that ortho isn’t on our insurance so we saw one that was. One kid needs no braces, one kid just needs upper and lower brackets and rubber bands. The price for the first ortho? 13,000 for both kids. The price from the second ortho? 3100. A 10,000 difference.

I love the content! If we know our priorities we may work on saving money! My teen son does not own a phone, my oldest own a car, but he payed part of the bill as he and my husband are using the car together. My priorities are eating well - I cook everything from scratch: pasta, pizza, beans…; we like traveling and nice cars. To be able to hold our standards, I do my own nails, we all cut our hair ourselves, I do all the cleaning and we all do our best to not waste any money. We go abroad every few years, and 2 a year we get the Nnice cart seating on the garage and we go on a road trip close to home. however I keep tabs on everything: food, rentals, attractions, flight…. I research in advance and my husband and I we set a budget for that. My degree in hospitality helps save and be safe here!😂 Also my medical bill is almost none, due to walking the dogs every day and exercising from home. Sharing experiences may help us all to have a better life and be happiest.

Your kids are very special to accept your no cell phone policy. I understand they don’t have a choice but they’re likely the only ones without a phone. Unfortunately, teachers utilize phones as part of the curriculum as well as coaches. It’s VERY difficult to maintain communication without a cell phone. I love being able to communicate with my kids while they’re at school or when they’re at work or with friends.

my husband & I set a goal to pay off our mortgage early when we bought this house so we paid 1/12 of the mortgage extra each month payment and paid off our mortgage the year before my husband retired so we just have our home insurance and Property tax. We also put as much that we could in retirement fund each paycheck.
