My biggest mistake was not making enough room between garden beds. I wanted to maximize the garden bed area, so made the aisles between beds one foot wide. Regretted not having at least a foot and a half, or maybe even 2 feet wide. Try pushing a wheel barrow down a foot wide path and you will understand.

I had issues with self wicking buckets last year. Some of my plants got toxic. I want to do more container gardening, but trying to decide how to combat the issues. It was nice not having to water them twice a day, but I just need to fix them so they can either be flushed out periodically or drill a lot of holes in the bottom and put them on an irrigation line. The other mistake was not protecting my cucumber in the raised bed when we had hail. It stunted it's growth for 2 months, and then it took forever to bear fruit, though it had tons of flowers. So, a closer weather watch is in order. I do have a structure overhead that is hail proof, but this was at the end and open to incoming hail. (The second cucumber plant was in a bucket and ended up toxic.) This spring I planted some cool weather crops and slugs have eaten them all but a few. I had them covered while it was cold, but all that baying went for naught. They even ate all my self seeded sunflowers! Luckily, I have more to put in the ground. But slug bait will be waiting for them. 😉

I am beginning to panic about the pumpkin, it looks like it may overtake my entire raised bed and the tomatoes look like they are going to be very tall. I am by no means a gardening guru, I have raised beds and containers. I also plant half of my veg every year into prepared straw bales that we put up against a trellis for growing cucumbers, beans, small melons, even tomatoes.growing potatoes into straw bales. I did that with sweet potatoes last year and ended up with over 40 pounds of sweet potatoes from 4 bales and about 6 sweet potato starts. Bonus* all those straw bales will become great composted dirt for your beds and containers, or for your fall garden you can use broken down bales as mulch as well. (Straw bales need to be prepped over 10-14 days with a high nitrogen fertilizer & water before planting) not all plants like being grown together, Brassica's, Corn, Dill and tomatos don't grow well together, Peppers don't grow well with Beans, cabbage family and beans. When doing a square foot garden consider the volume of fruit you get from your plants. Tomatos, Cucumbers and beans will have a higher yiels per plant than corn. When doing square foot gardens having plants that work well together will make happier more productive plants.

Check out Joel Karsten. He introduced Straw Bale gardening. This year will be our 3rd year including straw bale in our garden. It really allows me to grow way more veg. It also increases our organic raised bed and container dirt. I live in a very hot and humid area during the summer so our bales break down fairly quickly. We have to replace them each season.

My cats must have green paws. Only one of the local strays will pee in the beds, and mine are too much little gentlemen (and lady) to go anywhere but their litter boxes. Considering what my squirrel and varmint problem could be without them, it could be worse.

Indeterminate plants keep going, assuming you have the zone or setup for it, but determinate varieties will peter out and die after a certain point.

@@lorrainealexander1272 Thank you. two 4x4 is a good size to start and learn how thinks work. You can use some shade-cloth to provide some protection from the harsh sun in the summer months.
