Good video on raised bed//Square Foot gardening. I did notice on the section titled '' HOW TO FILL YOUR RAISED BEDS'' that you weeded out all of the wild purslane growing there. It is a really good warm weather vegetable that can be used in a lot of different recipes. I usually leave a fair amount of it growing in one bed where it doesn't interfere with whatever veggie I planted in that area.

Luckily for me, I found out recently that my local landfill sells compost made from yard waste and kitchen scraps for about $30 a yard and slightly composted yard debris mulch for $20 per 3 yards. They will even deliver it to me for $75 a delivery. For a couple hundred dollars, I can get all the compost and mulch I need and have it delivered to me. Prior to them offering delivery, I had no way of obtaining it (I don't know anyone with a truck capable of handling a yard of compost). Finally, 2021 I will be able to have a decent garden. My soil is crap so raised beds are about my only option if I want any decent success. I've tried in the dirt for three years in a row even with fertilizer and watering and nothing wants to grow except grass and weeds. I'm tired of my lawn, I want a garden complex.

Yes buying compost in bulk like that is a great idea! I unfortunately cant do it because I don't have a road to my garden and by that I don't have an easy access :( But I make my own and I am happy with it!

Put a corrugated cardboard, newspapers or cardboard on top of this flipped topsoil and forget about weeds. Or if you are making beds in fall you can do a lasagna layers. You don't even need to flip grass, just put cardboard on vegetation, then some green and brown materiał and compost on top. Greetings from Poland :)
@SmallGardenQuest
@SmallGardenQuest 5 жыл бұрын
Greetings to Poland. I agree with you I could do that. But I wanted to achieve the height needed for the raised beds. Thats why I flipped the grass. Otherwise yes if you just want to suppress the weeds some cardboard will do just fine :)

@@SmallGardenQuest I just did the math and I saw that I need about 40 sq m plantable area for vegetabales for my family to eat and preserve all year. I will do similiar beds like you but "u shaped" with about 60 cm bed connecting two beds at north side. Good content tho. If I may suggest something, put a lot of charcoal to your compost. It can do wonders.

Raised beds? They look to me to be sectioned off gardens. Here is my story. First, I should say I used to watch a gentleman on PBS who square foot gardened, some 42 years ago. So. I moved into my first and last house 19 months ago. The house had two single beds in one of the bedrooms. We took the beds apart and reassembled them outside. These were truly RAISED beds. Nice seeing how I'm in a wheelchair. I live in the desert where we can't rely on top soil. Its much to sandy to use to plant with. We bought bags of raised bed soil, and 🐔💩. We also added coconut shavings to enrich our soil. Last year planting in the summer was VERY difficult. I lost my plants TWICE. This year I decided no planting when the temps were from 105°~120°! It's now just under 100° so I started my crops from seed. Its looking very good. I'm not planting totally square foot, but certain plants that need more care are at the front of my beds. I've also made sure not to plant the sane plant in the area where I planted last year.
@SmallGardenQuest
@SmallGardenQuest 5 жыл бұрын
Glad to see that you are gardening. Yeah the raised beds are not elevated beds but they are 40 cm or 16 inches up so good enough for me :) And yes planting in the summer heat is hard you need to provide your plants some shade with a shade cloth and water them twice a day to cool of the soil around them.

We are trying “no dig” method by Charles Dowding . You don’t have to remove grass. It looks amazing . A lot less work ! You might like it
@SmallGardenQuest
@SmallGardenQuest 4 жыл бұрын
His method is OK for some climates and type of soils but here where the land is an old swamp with heavy clay soil I needed to raise the soil so that the garden would not get flooded in heavy rains. None of the gardening methods as far as I learned is a "fits them all" method 😊 but I watch Charles and he is great. Learned a lot from him 👍👍

Any tips if you have cats? They might spray in the crop? How can I hold a square foot garden on a table?
@SmallGardenQuest
@SmallGardenQuest 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Helen. Cats usually dont just spray on the vegetables. The most they do is poop in the garden but they usually dig it in so you shouldn't have a problem with them. If you do some netting around your plants should provide some protection. About the second question I dont know what you meant by holding a garden on the table.

Small Garden Quest - I’m in Zone 5b. Denver Colorado USA. I’m a Community Garden Leader. There are 47 total plots. I garden 4 of those plots (10’x12’ ea) so total area of 20’ x24’. We use straw for mulch & have organic compost delivered each spring. Denver’s community gardens are located on the grounds of public elementary schools & they say we can not have an active compost bin, so I keep Red Wiggler worms composting in my basement. I keep all of the plots at full capacity each year since taking on the Garden Leader role 4 yrs ago. I actually have gardened for 30+ years, but in 2 very different Zone 5 locations. First, in Chicago where the humidity is always above 60% & now in Denver, where the humidity is always below 60%. Huge difference in gardening methods! I’m enjoying your videos. Even with your accent, you speak very easy to understand English! Keep posting & always keep learning new stuff 🌱🌱🌱

That is a back breaking approach , turning grass sod is hard work and exposes weed seeds that will plaque you for years, not to mention pernicious weeds like thistle and bindweed. Much better just to cover your raised bed area with layers of cardboard and a mulch of compost and get planting straight away.
@SmallGardenQuest
@SmallGardenQuest 5 жыл бұрын
It is better I agree. But can you afford a truckload of compost? I cant even bring a truck to my propriety and I cant imagine how much time it will took to to bring all the soil in my beds. And I can tell you that I dont have much weeds now. Because I covered the area with a few inches of compost and another few inches of wood chips and this seems to work great :) Will see. Will keep you posted. Thank you for the comment tho. I try to look it positive - a workout cant hurt me :D

@@SmallGardenQuest I started a small raised bed garden for an impoverished single mom using just 5 growbags, this gives a 3x4 area. In the second year just add more bags. You end up with an instant garden that builds into a useful raised bed while being immediately productive. Much less work.

@SmallGardenQuest
@SmallGardenQuest 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the size of the wheelbarrow 🤔 but yes I reduce the pathways to a minimum because I have limited space on the plot. This land is not mine and I can't use it more. So your observation is absolutely correct go wider if you can.

Why do you stake them in so deep? Looks like you have a 2x4 in almost a foot into the ground.
@SmallGardenQuest
@SmallGardenQuest 4 жыл бұрын
To hold them in place. I like to walk on my raised bed boarder. You could stake just a few inches. Also by staking them so deep it's easier to build them if you are alone. If you have halting hands you can go with less. How many raised beds do you want to build?
