Being somebody who's capable of working on a bike, I could have trust issues. I always have the gut feeling of "no bike feels right unless my wrenchwork says so".

I occasionally do triathlons. I found a company that will pick up your bike from your home, pack it properly, of course, and transport it to the race you are doing. You have but to arrive at the race and your bike will be waiting for you. I don't need to tell cyclists what that 'peace-of-mind' is worth, when considering 'your baby.' Priceless stresslessness. All employees are cyclists, which, to any reasonable cyclist means a fair amount, when you consider how a real cyclist will handle your rig, vs. the airline employee who knows "diddley-squat" about the delicate/expensive components contained therein. I believe there may be several entities that perform this service, at this point.

Travelling with a bike is so awful, i would recommend cycling to your destination.

I would consider shipping the bike via fedex or something similar to the hotel. Shipping companies have more experience with bike boxes.

The other thing is to check for lifts or ramps in train/bus stations before travelling by public transport.

Normally you can carry 2 Co2 canisters in hold luggage and another 2 in hand luggage.
