And one of the ground rules: In Poland alkohol is for fun and used for "interpersonal" purposes, but it also can be very dangerous. If your crew is drinkig mostly to get stone drunk - change the crew. Also some tips for beginers: - never drink on empty stomach and I mean it. - try to avoid alcohol mixes. If You are dringking vodka - stay with it. One extra beer can unplugg You very unexpectedly. - proper hydration is a key to a short and controlled hangover. Don't use a cola, sprite and sweet juices as a chase. Sugar will make everything much worse next day. Clear water is the best option, even better with some lemon. - As we are talkig about hangover - those magical stuff that You can find in pharmacy "hangover killers" etc. are useless. If You need some support, use the simple vitaminum C in a big doses and one or two aspirines. It will help to clear Your blood faster and flush the alcohol with urine. But the key is to stay hydrated all the time. - fatty food - that's ok but don't eat to much of it as your liver already hate You and extra fat will give it a lot of extra work. - and most important - if You feel that's enough ane one more will be Your last memory at this party - do not hesitate to say "NO". If You are drinking with true friends, they will defend You from another "ze mną się kurwa nie napijesz?"

That's all true...i mostly use water as chase, when i feel that another shot will be too much i stop and drink only water. I try to avoid juice also. Fat food is good also because fat in stomach makes a little barier for alcohol to get in blood. And i dont think that u HAVE TO use excuse...if u dont want to feel bad next day u can say NO and any inteligent people will understand ;)

It's not only about the fat. Bread is aswell. Fills up the stomach. We drink usually from younger age. Like legally it's 18 in Poland ( and Europe in general) and 21 I US, but people start early. To be safe let's say 16-18. So those mistake your u pointed out, usually happen much earlier than in your case. Some tradition change with time like nowdays some wedding reception have vodka and wine 50/50 and some opt for other drinks. But a toast for the happy couple / birthday girl/ new parents / the host is a must on any occasion. That's custom, that's tradition, that's appreciation. And it's not only Poland I think. But in other Northern and eastern countries. That way like every country has its own word for " na zdrowie" and that means good health and fortune for both the host and the guests. I like that very much. Also did you do an episode about polish weddings? They are the best!

Regarding fatty foods - Fat is good. It does not put strain on your liver, it protects it. With a stomach full of fats, the alcohol you consume will be absorbed at a slower pace. With an empty stomach it all go straight into your bloodstream, which will overload your liver. But of course it does not mean one should forcefully stuff oneself with food. Though if it happened already for some reason, a shot or two of vodka will help.

Polish people love to make foreigners drink and love to show off their drinking culture in front of foreigners. That's why they won't allow you to mix juice and alcohol. Try going for whisky+soda next time. Not only do you have an excuse not to drink vodka (can't mix alcohols), but also this combination is perfectly acceptable here. Another tip is to put your glass upside down. I've never seen anyone disrespect this uneqiuvocal sign for "no-drink-for-me". I love your observation about mad wives! It is so on point! They're just too sober and, therefore, embarrassed.

One more thing: when you go to a house party in Poland, make sure you know what sort of alcohol is expected. If it's beer, that's easy, just buy yourself a couple of bottles and drink them as you please. If it's vodka, then you should bring at least as much as you expect to drink (since not all bottle sizes are available, it's normal to arrange to share the cost of one large bottle with one or two other guests), and don't come with an expectation that you will have your bottle of vodka all to yourself, as vodkas brought to parties are usually shared. When you bring it, it will get thrown into the fridge/freezer with all the others, and when time comes to drink, the hosts will just randomly grab one bottle from them and pour everyone a shot. Once it runs out, they will again randomly pick another one until they run out of bottles or everyone decides they've had enough (usually the latter). It is also often expected, and always a good idea, to bring a chaser with you. I would recommend a bottle of juice, preferably with high vitamin C content (helps prevent hangover) and not sweet (sugar makes hangover more severe). Orange juice or grapefruit juice works great, unless you are drinking Żubrówka, in which case a bottle of good apple juice matches its taste best.

I'm Polish and I never realized the rule about the host pouring the first shot but it is so true. I guess it's one of those things everybody just knows and you don't think or talk about it. You forgot about the penalty shot! If you come late to the party or slack too much with your drinking you might get a "karniak" ;)

Before you fill your own glass you first have to fill someone else's glass. If they refuse you can't just drink alone. Drinking alone = you're alcoholic ;) Mixing stuff or drinking with a straw looks "womenly", but young people don't care about that, it's old people and countryside thing. BTW it's the same for non-alcoholic drinks. It's customary to first ask neighbors (especially women and older people) if they want some tea/juice before you pour yourself some. But in case it's non-alcoholic it's ok if they refuse and you still drink your own.

So if husband will be to much "skuty" on the party and other men will be look better he will lose the game. So wife will be angry - not because he was drinking but because he cross his limit where you should say pass. Thats my theory. Great video.

When you going out with poles it is very unlikely they would live you in troubles. Always somebody will make sure you haven't left behind sleeping in hedges or something. You might wake up in different town tommorow but safe and sound. This is not necessary the case when drinking with other nationals.

A few toughts: 1. Spilling vodka can be viewed as "WOAH, WHAT A PARTY!" or "DON`T WASTE VODKA DUDE!!". It`s lottery. :) 2. Advice for you. When drinking, especially heavy alcohol, drink water. A LOT of water- not 1 or 2 glasses. Alcohol causes dehydration so supplying water will help. I can assure you, difference between drinking with water and without is huge. 3. Don`t use a straw. It`s wasting plastic and producing unnecessary garbage. 4. As a Pole I don`t understand these wifes and girlfriends either.

Protip: When drinking, avoid bread & similar things like cakes or pastry. They soak up the alcohol like a sponge in your stomach, and when your body starts digesting them (and in the case of carbs, this happens very soon after eating), the whole alcohol soaked in gets into your bloodstream at once. Boom, you're drunk in half hour. Fatty foods, meats, cheese - yes, but try to limit the bread. You'll party longer. Tested :)

I have an drinking experience in a famous american pub *Sloppy Joe's* in Florida. I was growing up in a Polish/German family and spending my sommer vacation almost every year in Poland. That implies that I was used to heavy alcohole. I was drinkng leagaly since I am 16 years old. A Texian tourist and his fiancee - maybe 25 years old - spotted me and invited me for a drink - I was 23 years old back than. He gave me the cup with *wodka cranberry* and I poured it with a single sip. They were astonished by that what I couldn't understand, because in Poland we drink pure wodka maybe half a cup like a small shot.

Why do girls get angry? From my experience (now im gonna sound like a drunkard) generally women tend to be more responsible so they dont get very drunk (at least my female friends dont). Guys just go with the flow and often they end up drinking when either: 1. They pass out or 2. Theres no more alcohol. Now women know from experience what will happen if they leave bf/hubbie with the guys - hell be wasted and be curing hangover for the whole next day and, for example, any plans that they had will fail.

Nice, one of the most accurate videos about drinking in Poland :) I'd also like to add, that even without mixing, drinking juice at all is unaccepted by some purists (like me). The habit is quite common right now but truth be told, chasing vodka with any sweet beverage is a horrible idea and downright barbaric. I'm offending most of the fellow Poles right now, but what else can I say? :P The ultra-correct way is to just eat. After each shot immediately take a bite of one of the strongly flavoured side dishes - sour cucumber, some pickle (mushroom, plum, pear, pumpkin), herring etc. In between, eat more fatty food like tatar, zimne nóżki, winter salad, bread with smalec etc. and drink water. At a drinking party, they'll all be within your reach. Another little note: at most parties, especially weddings, you'll be served soup before anything else. It will very likely be either rosół or flaki. If you plan on drinking, do not skip it! It's meant to "grease your stomach", as we say, and even if you don't feel like it or you're not particularly fond of them, trust me, you will thank yourself the next day. Following the right routine minimises the risk of hangover considerably. Sure, if you drink yourself unconscious, you'll be all groggy and useless the next day, but you won't have a headache or suffer from that annoying oversensitivity to light and sound :) Regarding those wives - I'm pretty sure they always hope this time their men will remember his limits and behave and yet again he fails :P But also many of them would simply like to go that wild themselves but feel it's inappropriate so the anger is envy-induced.

I like drinking vodka and I think mixing it with some juice or coke takes away the pleasure. Both vodka and juice's taste are spoiled this way. It will only be needed if you have some sort of crap, so disgusting that it can't go on its own. But don't expect that in Poland, just avoid the very cheapest ones and be sure you'll get the quality stuff; so have a proper shot and a chase (or a snack) afterwards. Mixing it with coke or juice would be sort of like carefully preparing a delicious steak and then throwing it together with potatoes and salad into a blender to create a mash. Give me a break :P I would add one more thing: when you raise your shotglass for a toast, look the person you're drinking with straight in the eyes (or if you're at the table with company, just have a quick look around others' faces, nod your head or smile to show your attention). It symbolizes the honesty and good intentions. Some Poles may find it disrespectful, if your eyes go sideways or you're looking in the ceiling while drinking with them. Also, a piece of advice for foreigners watching this: if you're not used to drinking vodka, be careful first time you have it, even if you're normally a drinker and your body can handle the booze. It's a different drink and the Polish tempo may be overwhelming; one of my English friends was able to drink a bottle of whisky or several beers without problems, but vodka made him drunk very quickly. So if you plan to drink with Poles for the first time, make sure there are some good people around who will take care of you if needed (most Polish will, anyway). And if you feel you've had enough, tell your company about it and skip next couple of shots. The Poles may laugh or make few jokes, as we tend to be proud of how much vodka we can drink, but will surely give you a break, especially since you're foreign. And once you know how you react to vodka, go for it and have fun - it's healthier than any coloured or flavoured spirit and you can have more of it and still avoid hangover. Na zdrowie!! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Went to Krakow from London last month. Very safe place no police or to be scared of any terrorism. Pure Europe high 🏨 standard good prices and quality of a food happy kids they have seen live nativity scene with all animals. I was surprised that everything looks new .I don't know how

You forget to mention in every gas station / grocery store / everywhere they selling a COLD vodka from the freezer. And you also drink ice cold vodka. I dont know about US but in Canada im not able to find a vodka or other liquor from freezer or even a fridge. Always WARM, then you go to a party with warm vodka you can't really drink.

Well Scandinavian here, we do the same with snaps. A small glass of snaps at the morning keeps the doctor away - but that is the only time we drink snaps alone. First time inpoland entering a bar in Poland in 1992 i asked for vodka and orange juice. The bartender was confused and didnt know what price to take... well a rumor says if you drink beer/vodka+juice through a straw, you faster get drunk. Shots normally arent for straws, but long drinks are. Maybe me beeing blind but I have never seen a woman drinking pure vodka with a straw

All of the things that you explained are so true !! I live in Hamburg Germany but I've bin raise for the first nine years in Poland an after that in Hamburg but with all the traditions , family ... Some of my classmates sked me after my typical polish birthday party why we do things so differen and act aifferen at party's . Now I have the perfect explain for them !!! 😃

3:16 - they just wanted to get you drunk :) / Wife thinks that her husband will drank 4-5 shot of vodka maximum - but husband usually forgets how much it is. /Wife must be angry - to let husband remember not to drink and don't become an alcoholic xD What to drink after alcohol is true - everyone always has some transport - I haven't seen a man who was driving after drinking.

I don't know about the rest of Poland, but here among Highlanders, we drink vodka from just 1 glass. Every table has its own kind of "queue" and each person pours vodka to the next one in the queue using the same glass all the time. Also, there is a rule that says you should not wash down the first shot of vodka.

It's worth mentioning to not forget to rise the glass and nod/cheer to the next person in queue, when taking the shot. Otherwise you'll have to drink another one to make it right (penalty shot).

On the 8th point you made about wives/girlfriends getting mad with their man's behavior post drinking: It really depends on how a particular man responds to consuming massive amounts of alcohol. I'm proud to say I remain fully level-headed and normal after getting hammered. I'm even nicer than when I'm sober. My wife never complains.

I won't ever forget tho how, when I was in Poland visiting my husband's family, I politely asked them to NOT pour any vodka etc for me (they kept trying :D ) since I really cannot drink that; and his uncle finally shook his head and mumbled "I don't understand this." We keep laughing about it to this day, and every time we visit again they will try again :D don't get me wrong here, I totally agree on that most people are drinking modest. But it's still funny how I'm always the only one who is not drinking and no one else gets it.

You can mix vodka with soda if you go to a bar etc. When You go with friends and they take bottle of vodka then you drink shots as it is a social way to drink for guys.

The best advice is to don't even try playing the game of who is capable of drinking more . Doesn't matter polish or not, don't do it! If anybody trying to lure you into competition drinking admit at the begining you have weak head and u would prefer to skip round or two from time to time because u would lose anyway and u don't want to feel bad. This way even if u are capable of drinking a lot you save the person who taunt you and yourself from a terrible hangover . Drink for fun not for competition this is how it supposed to be.

At every birthday no matter where we were after singing happy birthday it was followed by stol lat. In Olive Garden, Red Lobster, the neighborhood bar we sang stol lat. everyone knew the words and the older people were in tears but we sang it. Babcia and Dzidzia never made it though Babcia almost made it. But we sing it every year. People think we are crazy but it’s beautiful.

I'm from Poland and all of your tips seems so obvious for me 😂 in addition I can say that it's all true and very useful for People from other countries. When it comes to driving it's exactly as you are saying- WE NEVER EVER DRIVE AFTER DRINKING ALCOHOL, even if we are not literally drunk, we just don't do it. If police caught you they would take your driving licence very easily.

I must say that here in Poznan, my Polish friends always look surprised when I drink my vodka as a shot and not as a mix - but maybe I am just a guy with only alcohol mixing Polish friends :P

Poles are vey concerned with how they are perceived(individually and collectively) so when around foreigners we will either play our habits down or up depending on the person and often will assume foreigners do things differently so they will do the same. So they may not be surprised at drinking vodka straight, but they may be surprised that you are drinking it straight when they expect you to drink it mixed and being congenial Poles who want to look good in front of a foreigner they we going to drink mixed drinks. Of course every case is different but I feel like that is a pretty common thing. For example when I go home to Poland my family pours me soda with ice without me asking because they assume that being an American that's how I drink it.

I love your videos! This one is especially important because I would not be able to explain everything so well form my Polish perspective. You described all the customs and I new they existed - but would never think of mentioning them ;) Next time please add "do not come drunk to the wedding and do not bring alkohol to the wedding - you can drink there for free and predrinking makes you super weak" Thank you for sharing your experience it is very interesting.

I think that in general drinking heavy alcohol is more accepted among Polish men than women. Also some people act really silly after having too many shots.

Women lack the enzyme necessary to break down alcohol (or they have less of it), so alcohol affects them more. They get drunk faster and get more liver damage. So women in general should avoid drinking, for health reasons.

Vodka = 40-50% vol. Bimber = 80-95% vol. (varies heavily on expertise who made it) Spirytus (distilled and rectified) = 96% vol. All are hard, but spirytus/bimber are twice as hard as vodka.
