As someone who produced a documentary about factory farms, I expected a lot more from the last question/comment. If you cared so much about plants, you wouldn't eat animals, as it takes 14 pounds of plants to produce one pound of meat. So if you wanna save plants, eat the plants, not the meat.
@josephinekoch1006 жыл бұрын

@edwinfndz6 жыл бұрын
rozbeh ariya that wouldn't be everyone's answer. Most vegans what they don't like is the industrialization of farm animals and the horrible living conditions they live in. They loathe those who kill the prey they are gonna eat because at least they aren't hypocrites who buy meat on the supermarket without seeing the process before that meat getting there. Also many vegans agree that one reason to be vegan is because NOW we have many options (flavored fake meat made with tofu, beans burgers, etc) they are not available on the supermarket something that didn't exist decades ago. So if one were on a desert island and needed to eat meat to survive, one would absolutely do so with little remorse, because you don't have the resources to eat something else, and that animal didn't live a caged constricted life to be on your plate.

It is said that in times of need, man is known to eat man. All talk of compassion, values, good conduct, morals and ethics applies only in times of abundance. Make a dozen affluent people meet, and they will talk about helping others and making the world a better place. Keep those dozen people hungry for a week, and then only provide enough food for two of them. The same people will fight each other to death to fill their bellies.

Because giving the cow water and water for the plants or grain to feed the cow is equivalent to showering for a month. The grain can go to people and of course water. Being vegetarian is always more eco friendly. But a lot of meat eaters have literally said to me wow, that cool, but I really like burgers. Oye. D Deeze, the reason I asked why you're not vegan is because even "humane" farms cause suffering. For example, cows produce produce milk for their babies, just like any other mammal. So they are forcibly impregnated by farmers (just imagine how violating that must feel) and shortly after birth, they are separated from their babies, which is traumatising for both mother and baby. If the baby is male, since he can't produce milk, he is slaughtered and his corpse is cut up and sold as veal meat. If the baby is a female, she will have the same future as her mother. Cows go through this cycle several times until their abused and worn-out body can no longer produce profitable amounts of milk, and so they are slaughtered and their corpse is cut up and sold for humans to eat (it wouldn’t be profitable to keep them alive).

If you’re new to tofu buy the one labeled medium and fry it really well and don’t forget to salt it. The really firm tofu blocks taste too much like soy and if you’re a beginner you won’t like it. This is just from my experience though. Also try different brands sometimes the coagulant they use to make the tofu tastes too vinegary so don’t give up on the first time just buy different brands they’re cheap anyway. For me personally the fried medium tofu has an egg white texture.

Arwen, Humans don't need animal products to be healthy. There are millions of healthy vegans out there, including athletes (eg patrik baboumian). And health organisations and experts, like the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the British NHS, the Dietitians of Canada, and the president of the president of the American College of Cardiology have said any person can be healthy without animal products at any stage of their life. The scientific consensus is that consuming animal products is unnecessary. Vegans also tend to develop less health problems, like heart conditions, diabetes, cancer, etc. The point though, is that you can be healthy on a plant-based diet. So why do you choose to be violent towards animals when you could be vegan? Does abusing defenseless animals make you feel powerful?

Kitten Lyric, Even if most vegans were assholes, that’s no reason for you to take it out on the animals by paying for their suffering and slaughter. If a black person yelled in your face and called you a piece of shit, would that be a good enough reason to disrespect other black people? No. But, actually, most vegans are actually apologists and will, in fact, ENCOURAGE nonvegans to take baby steps. Unfortunately, for your victims, the animals, this is a matter of life or death. When you’re not vegan, you’re funding suffering and violence.

Pappy Tron, I don't think he does, but to be honest, I've done no research on it. It doesn't really matter. You can be healthy and that's the point. You don't have to take drugs to be vegan. So why choose to be inflict violence upon animals, when you could just be vegan? Also, why do you think human lives have more value than the lives of other animals?

I really don't agree with the "to each their own" attitude. I don't think that it's "cool" that my friends consume animal products, since an animal needlessly had to suffer and die for that. I don't call them out but I don't say that "everyone should do what they want" cause there is a victim involved in their choice, I can't unsee that anymore. Animals are someone in my eyes, not something. But I'm really happy that she spreads the vegan message :)

I see it as something inbetween. We are not atomised individuals but connected social selves. Eating meat kills the planet in a major way and given we are all living on it, it goes beyond an issue of 'every should do what they want'.

i bet you enjoy all your wonderful medical treatment though :). countless of animals die to make our medicines, diagnostic products and vaccines.
@ma_sabella006 жыл бұрын
just because most medicine is unfortunately still being tested on innocent animals at the moment doesn't mean that you can't try your best by being vegan in every other aspect. We are living in a nonvegan world unfortunately, so it's not possible to avoid harm 100% of the time. But you can eliminate it as far as possible by choosing a more conscious and cruelty free lifestyle which would be going vegan :)
@littleseamstress6 жыл бұрын
Ma_Saby16 i understand your intentions are good. i guess i just dont see a difference if people can opt for plant based eastern medicines but dont due to the convenience western medicine. i personally dont have a preference i just wonder why people act self righteous about food but easily omitt the other equally avoidable cruelty that they choose with medicine. maybe they arent aware?

Look look look I really like Natalie Portman. I agree with what all these comments are saying - I think she's very smart, cool, and friendly. I too am a vegan and one who studies it quite a lot. And this common, passive response from so many vegans, "everyone can choose for themselves" or "do what makes you feel good" or "you're free to choose to eat whatever you want" is not the true core message of veganism because for the animals there is no choice. Life is a constant hell. Your 30 seconds of tastebud satisfaction does not justify castration, mutilation, forced impregnation, and slaughter. I know this is unpalatable even for the fellow vegans because this is a fun, happy, everything's-great kind-of video but the truth is quite sinister. I agree in helping people move forward but to issue the tepid responses of "everyone gets to decide for themselves" doesn't do anything for animals. I'm glad to hear she's an animal, environmental, health activist, I'll listen for more from her. And just to confirm: she's right, plants are not sentient beings.

My response: 1. "eating meat since beginning of time" - we also have been drinking fresh spring water since the beginning of time, we also have never used toilets or toothbruse since the beginning of time... 2. dating other vegans - you date whoever you like, and you like someone because of their appearance and personality, not becoz of their beliefs or goals, coz u tend to set those aside when trying to build a meaningful relationship, and beliefs and goals only come up once u both feel secure with each other and u tend to influence each other and beliefs and goals change over time.. 3. "kids being vegan" - a parent should educate and inform their children (not indoctrinate) to the point that they'll be able to make informed decisions themselves and become responsible for it... 4. People should be told that one is vegan becoz veganism is the truth, and people don't like hearing the truth. We are primates and anatomically we are herbivores and occasional insectivores (invertebrates), but we are not meat eaters (eating vertebrates, anything that can bleed), the consequences of eating meat is costly for our health, and the consequences for production of meat as a daily food source is costly for the entire world - environmentally, socially, economically.. 5. "BBQ parties" People, in general, can hang out at parties without eating, it's totally cool, if the host was really genuine he/she could prepare non-meat food or ask his vegan guest to bring fruits and veggie salads if possible, it's not that difficult... 6. "tofu" -- look you can go vegan and just not eat tofu or anything with soy, it is that simple... it's like a meat eater who doesn't eat pork... or a vegan who doesn't eat oats... or a meat eater who doesn't eat shrimp... soy is just one food out of the thousands of other plant food out there.. 7. "Afford being a vegan" - the only reason meat is affordable for everyone nowadays is becoz the govt subsidizes the meat industry, coz the trillion dollar meat industry also pays these politicians off... so taxpayers' money HAS to go to subsidies for the meat and pharmaceutical industries (pharma industries produce more drugs for farm animals than for humans).. before factory farming was a thing, people ate a mostly plant based diet in a week...farmed animals was very pricy... only eggs, dairy, and fish were affordable... during WW1 and WW2, affected countries rationed and the foods available were mostly plant based except for cheese.... w/o the subsidies, the price of canned corned beef would 3x or 4x depending on brand... 8. "island stranding" - question is an impossible one... it's like asking if someone was stranded on a unknown planet...like when was the last time u were actually stranded on an island? and at that time, did u find any vertebrate animal there to kill and eat?? 9. "feeling sorry for plants" - we grow 70% of total plant produce to feed to 50 billion farm animals... farm animals like cows, pigs, chickens eat more food than humans would on a lb per lb basis... so we'd be "killing" less plants if all of us humans just ate them instead of eating farm animals that require a ton of plant food as well...

Tofu by itself is nasty AF but it soaks up the flavor of whatever you put it in. It's like brussel sprouts, and everyone hates them but that's only because their mother probably boiled them instead of sauteed them and then held them hostage at the dinner table til they finished them. Also the key to finding out if you could like something is repetition. But I hesitate to mention that because I don't care how many times I could be forced to eat monkey brains or chocolate-covered crickets, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like it.
@MLGBrownCat6 жыл бұрын
Bolsheviki it's nasty because we aren't meant to eat it, same goes for seeds and legumes, meat is very easy to eat as it is, especially organs.

I don’t think Tofu is nasty, but actually quite nice even plain. There are many types of Tofu and the flavor varies greatly. You might have chosen the wrong one. Anyway if you don’t want, you don’t necessarily need it for a vegan diet. You might even like other soy-based products…

AND HERE IS HOW THESE QUESTIONS SHOULD TRULY BE ANSWERED.. "You don't really look like someone who's vegan" well she sort of does considering she's healthy and looks great for her age. "But humans have been eating meat since the beginning of time" Natalie answered this pretty well. We did a lot of things we don't do anymore. Like live in caves, or mud huts. We don't have to hunt for our food anymore, we have supermarkets. "Can you only date other vegans?" It's insane to me that Natalie is bringing out an entire documentary on the harm of animal agriculture, yet her husband isn't vegan 'at all'? For an actual, proper, ethical vegan, you'd only date vegans. There is no way in hell I'd date or marry someone who enjoys paying for animals to have their throats slit, when I am fully aware of all the harm caused for the planet, the animals, and also what it's doing to my loved ones health. "Do your kids have to be vegan?" Any ethical vegan would raise their kids vegan. 100%. Children are healthier without eating rotting corpses and pus secretions from other mammals. "Vegans only eat that way so they can tell everyone they're vegan" no, people go vegan because they feel it's wrong to kill 56 billion land animals and trillions of sea animals annually. "I was going to invite you to my BBQ party but there will be meat there" some vegans could do this, I however could not. I know what goes into every single sausage/hamburger, and there is no way I'd support anyone cooking that. It's murder? I'm not going to sit around and act like it isn't. "I could never go vegan, I tried tofu once and I hated it" cool, I hate tofu too and I'm a vegan. Try tempeh instead. Or just have seitan, chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, lentils, faux meat alternatives, anything.. "How does anyone afford being vegan, isn't it crazy expensive" the cheapest foods in the world are vegan. Beans, rice, lentils, vegetables, corn.. like I'm confused at how this is a thing? Look at the price of a kilo of dead animal compared to three cans of chickpeas. Being vegan is expensive if you want it to be, same with any other way to eat. Depends how much you spend on your health. "What if you were stranded on a desert island and your only choice was to eat animals" just like Natalie said, unlikely. I don't know how every meat eater comes up with this same, idiotic response!! If you were literally starving, dehydrated, stuck on an island with nothing, and a random animal came along, maybe you'd try to kill it? And probably fail. Because we aren't carnivores. The animal would probably eat us. "Don't you feel sorry for plants, they're technically living things and you eat those" actually, plants don't feel pain like animals and humans. They do not have central nervous systems. I can't believe this keeps coming up.. PS more plants are 'killed' in the harvesting for ANIMAL FEED than there would be for vegan food. ;-)

I could never be with someone who is not vegan or vegetarian. My parents are, my grand parents are, my great grand parents were, and my my mother's side they have been vegan for about 5000 years because half of her family is Jain and veganism is the number one rule of the Jain faith, and the religion is 5000 years old, so,... My husband (yup husband) is vegan, our kids are raised vegan. Now i am going to make even the vegans jumps but even our employees are vegan (we are both veterinarians). When i want to hire someone i take them out for an interview at a restaurant and let them order first. If the person tells me that he or she is vegan, i basically don't even read the CV and hire them. My kids baby sitter is vegan, but that was a deliberate choice, i requested a vegan one. The only people who get money from me but are not vegan are my kids teachers and school workers, but that's ok because i get that money back from non vegan clients at the clinics, which i only spend at vegan restaurants, vegan supermarket, vegan farms,etc.... But actually my husband and kids are fraud vegans because they do eat eggs. But these come from my own hens, all rescued from slaughterhouses and separated from the roosters, so the eggs are not fertilized and since it doesn't hurt hens at all to lay eggs and that they would go to waste otherwise, they eat them. But i don't. I also have cows rescued from dairy farms when they were pregnant so they live peacefully with their calves and the milk goes to the ones it was always destined to. The only thing i would like to eat is honey, but i can't .

@mateusbrazil94876 жыл бұрын
You do realize that you are not hunting your dinner, right? The animal is not living freely with a chance to scape, until you decide to cook it. You, human (who claims to be intelligent), have the choice to eat a potato, save an animal, the planet you live in and improve your health. Watch earthlings and cowspiracy. If after that you still think the animals don't have a choice, your mind is far more troubled than you realize.

I wish it was simple like that. Unfortunately, we live in a society and my neighbours decisions affect me as well. For instance, the decision people make to eat meat is destroying the rain forest in my country. My family and I are healthy, but since we have public medical care, I pay (US$15,000.00 an year in taxes) for my neighbour's surgeries, medications, and other needs because he eats animal products on a daily basis. How is he entitled to have his own choice, when he is harming and being a burden to our society? Why shouldn't I call out his stupid behavior? You can see Natalie is acting in this video, smiling and saying "everyone is an individual and has its own choice". If she pay taxes and know that billions of people are destroying the planet she want her kids to live in, I bet she lied in the video, to seem cool. I doubt her husband eats a steak in front of her. And of course her kids are vegan. By the way, the stranded island is an absurd idea... Anyone who likes to live whould do whatever it takes to live, even eat another human. But last time I checked, no human lives in that condition in 2018

Vegans have been around for centuries and some religions have a vegan diet. I think it’s ignorance and just plain rude when people judge you based on what you eat. I am not a vegan myself, but I like vegan meals.

Is it me, or has her vocal fry gotten worse over the yeara? Still, she is adorable.

The raped and murdered animals do not get to decide for themselves. Only humans. Encouraging your family & friends to avoid life threatening diseases is something all vegans should do.

First 10 seconds fail: Birkenstock are not vegan. (yes they do a vegan version now, but that's not what Birkenstocks * iconic leather sandals * are known for).

What I mean is: while Birks have been associated with hippies (hence vegetarian? Uh, pfff, OK I suppose) for 50 years, vegan Birkenstock just came out and they are pretty much only available online. Everyone associates Birkenstocks to LEATHER sandals. Now, I don't think what Natalie Portman said is a big deal at all, cause she is not supposed to be informed about shoes. Who really cares? But that first sentence is funny cause it makes absolutely zero sense, that is all. You simply CANNOT associate Birkenstocks with vegans.

Shesare Er Villano well precisely... She just didnt get how a vegan is supposed to look due to the comment “you dont look like youre vegan”

Shesare Er Villano yeah aren’t they (mostly) made of leather?

Birkenstocks definitely are leather. Even the very common ones that use fake leather for the straps, still use real leather for the footbed. Only recently true vegan ones have started to be produced, but they are only only available online. The bottom line is: when you say Birkenstock you are talking about famous leather sandals and that has been the norm for 50 years since Jerry Garcia from Grateful Dead started popularizing them in the USA.

I don't have a 'steak' in that company, not sure if the pun was intentional but made me smile :)
