Return to Mayberry is a feature-length romantic comedy based on two of the most popular sitcoms of the 1960s: The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry R.F.D. The film resurrected the simple folksy life of Mayberry, 18 years after The Andy Griffith Show went off the air on April 1, 1968. While the shows aired on CBS, the film Return to Mayberry was broadcast on NBC on April 13, 1986, with 16 of the original cast members, including Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, Ron Howard, Howard Morris, and Jim Nabobs and George Lindsey, reprising their roles. The film was directed by Bob Sweeney, who had directed 80 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and it was written by Harvey Bullock and Everett Greenbaum who had actively written for the same show. The film became the most-watched film of 1986, getting enough ratings to claim a spot on the 'Top Ten Movies of All Time.' The film also revied Andy Griffith's career and served as the series finale of The Andy Griffith Show as no new episodes were created or released after the broadcasting of this reunion film.
In this video, we take a trip down the memory lane and visit some of our favorite characters from The Andy Griffith Show but more importantly, we highlight the 9 things you failed to notice in the reunion film Return to Mayberry. So, hit the play button and enjoy.

One comment about the two stars I met! I was born in 1963 and I do believe my Mom must of had the TV on as she gave birth to me! I’ve watched the show my entire life! I had the great honor of meeting Betty Lynn and Jim Nabors! Two of the kindest people I’ve ever met! They are both gone now but I was overjoyed by meeting them both! I still at the age of 60, still watch the show everyday

My parents lived near Los Olivos when this film was shot. I visited the set twice. The first day was a non-shooting Sunday. As I was heading to my car a voice called out, "Good Mornin'". It was Jim Nabors. I went back the following Tuesday with friends and they were shooting the rally scene and the closing shot lowering the flag. I hot to see the whole cast and Andy had a nice conversation with my friends. A great experience!

One more fun fact! “Floyd Lawson - the barber” (Howard McNear) had a stroke in 1963 that left him with near paralysis on the left side of his body and Andy Griffith told him they would work around his paralysis so he wouldn’t quit getting a paycheck. That’s why he would be sitting in the barbers chair reading the paper or he would be sitting on the bench outside of the barbershop reading a newspaper. What a classy thing to do. ❤️
@mattalbrecht7471
@mattalbrecht7471 4 жыл бұрын
And this was also at the insistence of Andy Griffith. He was a class act and stood up for the other actors. I want to say i heard there were conversations about Floyd's character being written off the show, or recasting the part, but Andy said "no howard, no me". Don't know if that was true or not, but it would make sense. Shows if the time were not really known to make accomodations for a disability

@@MrWosclifton i didn't say he was class in his personal life now did i? For all we know his wife could have been a c*nt and used sex as a weapon... women foolishly think that men get married to give up sex, and then use sex as a weapon. That always works out real good. My reference was to him as an actor. It was uncommon for actors to watch out for another at the time.

Spot on. If you want to mention the replacements, CBS in particular went with more game shows (including The New Price is Right), and shows in the style of All in the Family and the Mary Taylor Moore Show. The desire for more contemporary shows also paved the way for M*A*S*H in 1972. The backlash from the Rural Purge caused the network to give The Waltons a chance (although they expected it to fail and initially scheduled it in a death slot), which in turn lead to other shows such as Little House on the Prairie and Eight is Enough.

Mayberry RFD should have never been on the air in the first place. Just trying to milk the Andy Griffith Show franchise until the tit dried up. Ken Berry may have had talent (i guess), but he stuck out like a sore thumb and never seemed, well, "right" in the role. Ken Berry in "Mama's Family" was even worse. How demasculinizing of a role playing a complete bumbling idiot with a butt ugly spouse...

Are you sure? Because Andy was always, "Going to Mt. Airy". For sure, Mt. Airy is a real place. I lived in Waynesville, NC for a while and am aware of it. True, that's where the museum is and I think 'Aunt Bee' retired to the area, for rea.!! They said she lived like a hermit and only spoke to Andy once after she left the show and moved there.

I've never actually seen the film, but having lived in Los Olivos for so long, it's something we all know about and are proud of! We even have "Mayberry 1986" carved into the pavement near the park. Nice to see some shots from the film of our town! Thanks!

Aunt Bea - Frances Elizabeth Bavier - when she retired moved to Siler City, North Carolina, which was about 20 minutes where I lived in Pittsboro, NC. Both towns are located in the same county. Ms. Bavier was an interesting character in her final years. Though she wrote inspirational messages to fans, supported charities from her home, and even left money to the local police department, she was not liked by all her neighbors. One of my college friends grew up as her next-door neighbor. Crystal told me that it was very obvious that Ms. Bavier was a talented actress because she was nothing like Aunt Bea in her family's dealings with her. My great aunt, also, met her once at a charity event and any time it was mentioned all my great aunt would say, if she didn't change the subject, was "She was interesting, though not someone I would play cards with" with no further details. Don't get me wrong I am not saying she was a bad person, I just find the inconsistencies in her reputation humorous.

Also noticable is that Barney(Don Knotts) was bald in the movie. There was a scene in "Barney hosts a summit meeting", where after he and Andy are ran off by Mr. Cabe, Barney is seen at the office distressed and is rubbing his hair extensively. You could see, where Barney is going Bald.

A couple of items bothered me about this video. First of all, in your introductory picture, you show the corner of Ron Howard's chair circled, and you make no reference to that during the video. WTH, man! Also, your repeated requests to hit the like And subscribe buttons. We know what to do. Just show your material, and we 'll let you know whether or not we like it, or want to subscribe. Other KZbinrs are guilty of these practices. Just show your stuff, and let us be the judges. Oh, and to answer your question: it left me wanting more.

So many great thespians. I was a cop for over 20 years and I've been a Soldier for about 17 years. I'm a quirky man like 'Barney Fife.' A past detective sergeant and current lieutenant colonel. Even some people in the city I worked in equated me with him; that's fine, because when I needed my 'shiny bullet' and bravery I had more than had that. Thanks Andy and Barney. I became a cop because of you both.

Ellie only appeared in series 1 (as a potential romantic involvement), and Ken Berry only at the end - so it is not surprising that those characters didn't appear. I was surprised that, since Helen and Andy brought their son back to be baptised in Mayberry RFD, I don't know how they forgot him. :)

This clown is only one tick above “LandumC Goes There” only because he’s big enough to allow folks to comment on how bad his stuff is. You won’t learn anything more in this guy’s, or LandumC’s videos than you could on Wiki. Sometimes LandumC even goes word for word. That’s not producing it’s stealing.

Small clarification: the original studios were not bulldozed in the 70's after Desilu sold out. Only the famous 40 Acres backlit area was sold off in parcels. The studios themselves are still there as the Culver Studios in Culver City, CA. Just down the street from Sony Picture Studios, which used to be MGM. Sadly, the famous MGM studios backlot is also gone, sold off in the 70's as well for development.
