Sí, se utilizan mucho. Yo, como nativo, te diría que "comer" se utiliza para incontables ("He comido lentejas", una cantidad indeterminada) y ambos ("comer" y, sobre todo, "comerse") para contables: "(Me) he comido un plato de lentejas", una cantidad concreta; otro ejemplo: "(Me) he comido las lentejas que quedaron de ayer".
