Fun fact: this was Dolly's first movie, and since nobody told her otherwise, she literally memorized every line of dialogue spoken by every character in the movie, not just her own. Yes, even in scenes in which she didn't appear. She just thought that was what she was supposed to do!

Fun Fact: that was the original way of method acting! (My high school theatre director told us about that while rehearsing “A Thousand Cranes”) Nowadays it’s about getting fit and doing whatever Jared Leto is doing.

Okay, true story. My brother-in-law is from Australia. He hadn't experienced a whole lot of American culture when he and my sister saw this movie. And he enjoyed the movie very much, and then, during the final credits, when he saw that Dolly had written and performed the title song, he said to my sister, "Wow, she's a pretty good singer, too." 😂😂😂

When they were filming this movie, Lily, Dolly, and Jane spoke to women who worked in secretarial pools about their jobs and the treatment they received from their male coworkers. Most of the secretaries admitted to indulging in revenge fantasies about their bosses. The actors loved it so much that they picked their favourites to recreate in the fantasy sequence in the movie.

I know! Right? I watched this back in the day (WELL before DVDs) on broadcast TV. Even as a child, I understood the gravity of the thoughts being portrayed. I remember thinking, "Oh, wow! Her job and income are SO important to her that, although she might have just killed a dude, be convicted of criminal liability and possibly spend time in prison, her highest priority is her job and providing for her children. Especially as a single parent, that would be a horrifying thought."

Depends greatly on who you work for. There's no escaping rules of conduct and such, simply because people do not discipline themselves very well, but the opportunities are better today than they were 40 years ago. Everywhere I turn, there are successful women running things and getting a fair shake isn't as hard to find anymore. Ohhh honey you're so cute... Sexual harassment in the workplace. THAT "didn't exist" back then sweetheart... It wasn't considered as real in the eyes of the law. Yup. THINK about it, this is 2022 and it barely exists now that people take it seriously in court and they're always trying to settle out of court. THIS was filled back in the 1980s, women and only join the workforce package the '70s full time and you were barely able to get a full time. That whole thing that lily Tomlin was talking about how she trained him for his job, that absolutely positively is the truth. Many women have trained the BEST MEN and whatever industry they're in. Then THEY go on to become their bosses... And if they're lucky eventually they'll own the business. As they always say when it comes to competition but the best MAN win right? YUP.

So glad you did a review of this, there are lots of great films from the 70's and 80's and reaction channel's often don't cover enough variety. They always do the same movies. 9 to 5 is a great film, and nobody reviews it! If you want to see more Lily Tomlin check out "The incredible shrinking Woman", (1981). Also check out "All of Me", (1984), with Lily and Steve Martin.

The fellow who directed and rewrote the script, Colin Higgins, died way too young, but made some of the funniest movies of the '70s. He wrote the movie HAROLD AND MAUDE, which was one of the first significant cult movies that people just kept going to the theatre to watch again and again before there was home video. He then wrote and directed SILVER STREAK with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, and FOUL PLAY with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase. His last finished movie was again with Dolly, THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS. All of these would make great reaction vid subjects.

Impersonating a doctor isn't, in and of itself, illegal. Practicing medicine without a license is what's illegal. You can wear a lab coat and claim to be a doctor all you want so long as you don't give medical treatment to anybody. If you really wanna see an even younger Lily Tomlin, you should watch some clips of her from the old comedy series, Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. She used to do a lot of character comedy from the 70s-90s. Her characters like Ernestine, the telephone operator, and Edith Anne the spunky 5.5-year-old were the most iconic. Her characters were written by her partner and wife, Jane Wagner. Lily also performed a one-woman show that is available on KZbin.
