Then Ron & John (Clements and Musker) wanted to make The Little Mermaid- but Jeffery Katenzenburg was all like “You can’t make this movie- because it’s too similar to Splash!” Then they were all like- “What color should Ariel’s hair be?” Then Jeff was all “Everyone knows mermaids are blonde.” Like- that dude (compiled with the rest of his history at the Disney company) was a total asshat!

"Why isn't Splash talked about more?" Well, I can think of at LEAST one reason: 1984 saw a simply STUNNING array of blockbuster, and iconic, movies released that year, including: 1) Ghostbusters. 2) Beverly Hills Cop. 3) Gremlins. 4) Police Academy. 5) Footloose. 6) Terms of Endearment. 7) A Nightmare On Elm Street 8) Star Trek III: The Search For Spock. 9) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom ... among many others, both mainstream hits and Cult Classics (that have a fan base still going strong today!), so Splash kind of got lost in the background - but STILL managed to get 11th place in at the box office during that INCREDIBLE year in film.

Things to note: You know lots of 'Madisons' because of this movie. Although it was a fairly common last name, Madison was for the most part, not used at all as a first name. In 1985 (a year after this movie) it became the #2 most popular name given to baby girls. Ariel has red hair because of this film. The Little Mermaid began production right after Splash was released. The title mermaid was always assumed to be blonde, but Michael Eisner, the CEO of Disney at the time, told the animation dept. to change her hair color to differentiate her from Madison. Splash was actually a loose adaptation of ''The Little Mermaid' - just with a reversed ending, with the Male love interest leaving the land to live in the ocean with the mermaid. In fact, there was a scene that was filmed for Splash that never made the final cut, with Madison visiting a sea witch so she could turn her tail to legs. This actually answers your question of why they couldn't just return during full moons - the deleted scene would have helped explain that she could only take human form this ONE time during said full moon. Splash was the first movie released under Disney's 'Touchstone Pictures' banner, reserved for movies with slightly more adult themes, language or nudity that would be deemed inappropriate for a 'Disney' movie. Even with Freddy's shenanigans and Madison's nudity, the film received a fairly mild PG rating. The recent Guillermo del Toro film 'The Shape of Water' is, for the most part, a gender-swapped version of Splash.
@ImmortalBroken
@ImmortalBroken 2 жыл бұрын
Splash came out four months before the "PG-13" rating was introduced, so possibly it would have gotten pg-13 if it had come out a bit later. (I'm guessing, but I didn't count the swears lol.)

Watch the 1948 "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy first. Then watch the 1986 "The Money Pit" starring Tom Hanks and Shelly Long. It's not a direct remake, but is basically the same premise: "building a house will consume ALL of your time and money, but is ultimately worth it." Both are highly entertaining films, made in their respective eras. And any excuse to watch a Cary Grant film is a good one.

Funny you mentioned the "Little Mermaid." This movie came out from Touchstone Pictures, which was Disney's spinoff company so that they could release more "adult" films without tarnishing the Disney brand. So it's entirely possible someone in animation remembered the scenes in "Splash" and used them as inspiration.

Ashleigh, I am so glad that you reacted to this movie. It is not a common movie for reactions, but it did launch a lot of careers. Fun fact, probably only to me - this movie was co-written by my cousin. He used to write for Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley, and became good friends with Ron Howard. The two guys who wrote this went on to write Spies Like Us, Gung Ho, Parenthood, City Slickers, A League of Their Own, Multiplicity and others. Their first major movie was Night Shift with Henry Winkler (also from Happy Days) and Shelly Long. These were some of the best comedies of the 80's and 90's!

Still some of the best realistic mermaid footage ever captured, even if her tail has knees ;D Seriously, though, the practical effects for this movie are amazing, especially for 1984. Just imagining the effort they went to to get all the frills and fins, to make sure they moved realistically in the water and out, even the shot where her tailfin sort of unrolls as she relaxes into the bath... crazy good work that I agree should have won more awards. Sadly, it wasn't even nominated for the Oscar for Visual Effects, although it would have been a tough fight against Ghostbusters, Temple of Doom, and 2010. Still, not enough love for just how well crafted this movie is, especially in the water scenes.

Tom, Darryl, Eugene, director Ron Howard, others, all came together. It was quite the fun walk down nostalgia lane. Lots of behind the scenes anecdotes. If you loved the film, I do recommend watching that reunion. One the the interesting facts was that they hired a stunt double for Darryl's underwater mermaid swimming scenes. But it turned out that Darryl was a fantastic swimmer, and could actually hold her breath for longer than the professional stunt diver. So she filmed all her own mermaid scenes. It was a part she was born to play.

I've been watching "Splash" back in the late 80s. I was 6 yrs old when I first watched it back then. In fact, Splash had started my huge obsession with mermaids. Shortly before the Little Mermaid came out back in 1989. Fun fact: Did you know that the lobster Daryl Hannah(Madison) was eating in the restaurant scene. Actually been stuffed with tofu. Instead of the actual lobster meat. They did that for her. Which she is vegan.

"Tom Hanks with Daryl Hannah is better than Tom Hanks with Meg Ryan - fight me." Nope. No need, because I wholeheartedly agree!!! Darryl Hannah was the first live-action mermaid I ever saw, and I love it. Fun fact: this film was the first-ever released on Touchstone Pictures, because Disney refused to release _Splash_ because of Darryl Hannah's nudity. So, to remedy this, Disney launched Touchstone. Plus, John Candy, Tom Hanks & Eugene Levy? In a film? Sign me TF up! And Cape Cod is on the end of Massachusetts, my home state! And there was a made-for-TV sequel! Not as thrilling as this film, but still a decent attempt.

This was a very big movie when it came out. Even though I was just a kid, I remember how popular it was. It established Tom Hanks as a leading man. Before this, he was known as the guy from Bosom Buddies on TV. He had another movie that came out the same year, Batchelor Party, but it was an R-rated comedy that didn't have the same broad audience appeal. Splash also established Ron Howard as a director who could create big hits. He had directed two theatrical movies before this, and both were good but not big hits (I think Night Shift is an underrated comedy). So even though you may not have heard much about this movie lately, it was definitely very successful and a career-maker for two of the people involved.

Ok, yes, you were supposed to assume he goes through transformation after he reaches the city, it is a fairy tale with a happy ending after all, plus that's what the original story stated. The reason you thought some of the scenes seemed like the Little Mermaid is because the Little Mermaid took artistic license and borrowed the ideas from this movie (Splash 1984 - Little Mermaid 1989). It's a shame you weren't born in my time, John Candy and Eugene Levy started out on a show called SCTV in the 70's along with several other stars you like. It was basically the Canadian version of Saturday Night Live, they came out about the same time. Anyway, whenever you see a member of the SCTV cast in a movie, you will always find more, same with SNL cast members, it's a family thing ❤. There's another film, though a little hard to follow, with Tom Hanks and another person you like to see him paired with (trying to avoid spoilers), called Joe verses the Volcano. Don't try to make too much sense of it, just enjoy it for what it is. The man with the mustache you liked was Howard Morris (or Howie Morris), he was a writer/comedian for several shows back in the 50's and appeared in several movies and tv shows. One of his most popular characters was Ernest T. Bass on the Andy Griffith show. He has an amazing history. And yes, Eugene has always had those glasses. Anyway, as always, loved the review, love you and tell Beans hi 👋.

It's been a while since I've seen this. They used to run it CONSTANTLY on cable TV. Like 3 or 4 times a day, on different networks, even. But I've always loved it to bits. I remember my mom really latched onto Eugene Levy's crazy character and his frequent utterance of "what a WEEK I'm having!", a line which, of course, began to be incorporated into all our lives. The game where you hit the ball against the wall is one of two possible games that are very similar but have some small differences - it's either squash or racquetball. OK, about the little cameras you've been seeing in movies, the flat, rectangular ones.....those were little pocket instant cameras, mostly from Kodak, such as the Kodak Ektralite 500, which allowed you to slip it easily into a shirt pocket or a purse when you were on-the-go. They were very popular and pretty commonplace back then, because they were affordable and very simple to use, and you didn't need to mess with lenses and stuff like that. It was just point and shoot. (Some of the lower end models did require you to use disposable flash cartridges when the photo called for flash photography, such as a nighttime snapshot, while other models had built-in flashes that just required a flipped switch to activateKeep in mind that this was many years before digital cameras became a thing, and we were still using actual FILM that we bought in rolls at camera shops or, more often, drugstores like Walgreens or CVS or Osco or Sav-On, or you might find both film and cameras at places like Target, Sears, Wal-Mart, etc. You weren't able to view your photos immediately either; once you'd finished a roll of film, you'd take the film (which, depending on the type of camera, came in a cartridge, a roll, or, starting in the 80s, a disc -- those were pretty interesting themselves) to the drugstore or camera shop, which had film developing equipment on the premises, and provided film development for a fee, or you could even send it in a special prepaid envelope in the mail to a film developing center, and they'd send you back your developed photos in the mail. Now, in addition to these simple cameras designed for snapshots rather than complex, even artistic photography (in which case you'd use a SLR camera, just like today, although again they weren't digital, they used film that required developing), Kodak and Polaroid both sold another type of instant camera, based on proprietary technology that Polaroid originally invented, which had a special kind of film that developed your photos almost immediately, like within 5 minutes of taking the photo - those had been around since the late 40s, and were fairly popular too),

"Now whenever I look at my legs and see my little bumpy cellulite, I'm going to tell myself it's just my mermaid tail comin' in." Thanks, Ashleigh. I now have Sprite on my laptop screen.

So glad you reviewed this movie! I think this movie really popularized naming girls Madison, one reason why there's a bunch of 30 somethings with that name.

My grandparents were not movie people but for some reason had this recorded on a VHS. It was a go-to for me and my sister growing up. I didn't realize it was made in 1984 but that's the year I was born so a little extra connection too!

This movie was made by Touchstone which was created by Disney, so this was Disney's first adult oriented movie. Hence why Tom Hanks sings "Zippidy Doo Da" from "Song Of The South". It's one of several Disney Easter eggs. At the time, it was a really huge deal to people that Disney went dirty. Now they're allowed to say "shit" in Marvel movies (also owned by Disney) and no one blinks.

This was my favorite movie as a kid.. I was obsessed! So glad you finally got to this. I gotta say, this movie IS talked about and loved So So much- GenX here and have always loved this movie! Also- weren’t you homeschooled, so that would for sure limit your scope for movies as well.. maybe?! I am so happy tho that you’ve finally seen this! 💕🧜🏻‍♀️
