Steel wool is excellent for stuffing holes around pipes.Mice won’t chew through it. We use it where pipes enter interior spaces like under cabinets/vanities. So glad you discovered the leak without any fire/explosion or gas poisoning. You probably have detectors installed. If not, Amazon 😊

Next time you want to check your gas connections for a leak, put a little dish/laundry soap in some water, in a spray bottle, and spray the connections. The leak will show up as little bubbles. "It's always something!" Welcome to the world of homeownership. With the support system you have, your family/friends, each other, your viewers, those who occasionally come to help, I, for one, have the utmost confidence in you. ❤

I would like to make a small suggestion for your gas pipe. There is available flexible stainless steel pipe made for that very purpose. It comes in various sizes and I think by looking at your pipe it is approx. 12mm or roughly 1/2 inch supply line. If you replace the line with stainless you will never have to worry about that line. It will not rust and your little furry visitors will not be able to "nibble" on it. I am not sure if it is expensive where you are , but where I live it is a very good option for the price as compared to copper or rigid steel . I am surprised that a rubber supply hose was used to go through the wall to whatever appliance it is connected to. I am just happy that you did not have any type of fire or possible explosion.

Get some steel wool to put in the other holes, to keep the mice out. Some minimal expanding foam for in the wall around copper pipe, and put some steel wool around the outside of where the copper pipe comes out of the house.

Here in The Netherlands people used newspapers as insulation for walls (underneath wallpaper), and for managing damp in floors. I think that is what was done in your cottage too. Our house was build in 1910 and during restorations we found several pieces with dates on it, from 1910 but also later dates.

You actually can use copper pipe safely to connect bottled gas via a regulator to a cooker or a heater. This is how we do it at our house in the Caribbean. We also check the connection to the regulator with the dish soap/water method. Universal, worldwide! ☺🌴🇦🇮

You could have a stiff mouse at the chew site..ripening to perfume your kitchen for a few days. My niece had a water leak every time the plug was pulled in the upstairs bathroom. Rats had chewed the top off the horizontal drain pipe in a couple of places…it only leaked when a load of water went through.

We had an extension built a few years ago and the plumbers used plastic piping to the radiators rather than copper. A mouse had a good nibble and we had a slow leak, which ruined carpets, flooring etc. We have now wrapped any remaining plastic piping (they put some in the loft as well!) with a very sharp metal type of product and haven’t had any trouble since. Avoid plastic piping anywhere if possible.

The beautiful small hammer you were using on the bookshelves used to be called a ballpeen hammer. (Did I spell that correctly?) My dad had one in the 1950s. What a good guy you are, Scott, for dropping the bookcase project for a while and helping Katie get the waterproofing supplies up to the cottage! And good on both of you for keeping your sense of humour throughout the whole gas line repair. "It's always something." A quote from Gilda Radner's Emily Latella hilarious sketches on Saturday Night Live. When you write your book on island life or make your documentary, that would make a great title. Thanks so much for recording some of what you do - I enjoy it thoroughly!

Maybe someone else has already suggested this, rats don’t like Steele wool so put it all the way around places you don’t want them near. Stuff it in any holes as well. Then I think I’ve heard use bars of a soap… I think it’s Irish spring they hate as well. Hope this helps. I’m rooting for yall. Oh and carbon monoxide detectors in every room with gas.

Hi guys, hope you're well. Do you think the moose was sniffing the gas? :) Great progress on the blue-ray shelving, Scott.
