I am again amazed at the work that goes into taking care of the cottage. Katie you so impressed me picking up that log, I know it weighs a ton. Also impressive is stripping paint. I’ve done that and oh, a lot of work. Btw, I only experienced midges when climbing Man Of Stor, and I just don’t know how you cope with that on a regular basis, bless you Scott, so maybe investing in one of those nets might be the next step, however, it probably wouldn’t look very manly, lol.

If you mix them with vaseline/ baby oil then you shouldn't have problems with irritation to the skin(& plain soap & water will get rid of all of them from clothing, surfaces in general.) Good 👍 luck with everything,& thanks for your vlogs- brings back so many memories😊 Julia, Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺 ❤ 😀 🪃

With a simple axe or log splitter the cedar will split like butter. Work in from the radius about 4 inches at a time. The wetter the better. Spiral in. Split them in the forest and wheel barrow the split wood. Wedges and sledge hammer are for the cranky grain. A mechanical log splitter is for the bad back!

Well done on the splitting! Ye can get a cheap "titan" chainsaw aff screwfix for about £100. i have used mine to chop up stuff in the backdoor for ages. See anaw, if you get old pallets and a bit of tarpaulin you can make a pretty good log store which keeps stuff dry but let's the wind blow through. I'm splitting stuff anaw the noo before the weather turns shite, for the past 2 years we've just used the log burner during the winter instead of putting the gas on down in Paisley. I don't watch yer videos all the time but check in on youse from time to time. Keep on keeping on!

Two splitting mauls, two people directly opposite each other working in the same crack, breaks those chunks right up. You have to trust each other and have good aim, however. Alternatively, use a splitting maul and a flat wedge or two, find the natural place to start on the outside where there is less resistance, and use the wedges to keep it open while you work opposite. Slower than team splitting, but effective. Splitting rounds is such an exercise in humilty! The wood only splits the way it wants to, no matter how hard you hit it.

I love your vlogs. It seems so peaceful and cozy, even on wet, sloppy, midgey days. It appears to be a cedar wood you’re splitting and very wet at that. I have been told that cedar is only good as kindling when it is dry. To burn as the main source of fuel is not good. Too resinous and will cause creosote build up.

I realize those sawed up pieces of the downed tree are not 100% round, but it seems they could still be rolled down the hill. There must be a reason you're not doing this. Can you tell us what your thinking is? That said, I think the best (easiest) solution to the challenge would be to add a log splitter to your wish list. You have an endless supply of wood to be split. The door you're stripping is going to be beautiful, Katie. So sorry to hear about the legendary midges, but also to hear there's some kind of solution. My best to you both!

Creosote CaN build up in chimmneys. Up north Say Alaska they mostly have pine to burn and its no more problem there than anywhere. You do not get creosote build up and long as its not a slow smoldering fire, A brisk burning fire will not build up creosote. It still creates soot though. lol

Ok.. I hate to see you folks working against yourselves when splitting wood. I would like to suggest a couple ideas that may help considerably when splitting large blocks. Having grown up in rural remote Ontario splitting and cutting firewood was a daily chore , which you tried to do as effectively as you could to save a lot of extra work . You have the right tools but need a bit of technique. When using a splitting wedge and sledge or large splitting maul go toward the outside edge and take smaller pieces off by going around the edge of the block. You find it is a lot easier and use a lot less effort to cut the block down .When you start in the middle you have to fight the entire block to split it . On smaller blocks this is ok to start in the middle as the wedge will do the job nicely . If you are going to cut the block with the chainsaw ,place the block up on the side and cut through the block with the grain , you will find that the saw will cut a lot faster as the chain will literally draw itself through without applying much downward pressure and bite easier ,you can quarter it quite quickly. I hope these hints save your back and arms from a lot of extra work swinging a heavy sledge or maul or lifting and moving the chain saw. I love the way you take on these challenges and work through the problems , Good Luck !
