So many fencers have this wrong. Video also tells you how to know what parry to do.

Are you trying to attack with blade engagement or in absence? That will answer most questions. You can do the actions either way but there’s tactical frameworks that these choices tend to be explained by.

Yes that 100 percent is a factor. Attacking palm down on the inside is still risky either way. If they parry it will take you more time to defend or mutate still. Also wether your parrying with your arm or your body and which tempo you want to spend has a good effect as well. Thanks for commenting that is a good addition to consider.

So if you train longsword, thrust using the same palm mechanics that you'd use with a rapier.

I do for the most part yes bit there are some differences. Like the 2nd Hand making you stronger on the palm down out side thrusts. I find positioning in long sword to be super important as well sense you don't have the offhand to use. I fight long sword and rapier personally pretty much the exact same. I just use the segments differently becuase the back hand can change angles of the blade mid movements.

One of the key things to is when you attack the out side palm up in long sword, you want to make that mutation as they push agaiant your sword. This way thier momentum is going to the outside. This is important so that you don't double.

So what should I look at when I am encountering a new opponent? I should see how their feet are planted, because that can tell me where they can step. I should also look at how they are holding their rapier, because that can affect where they can strike. What else should I look for?

So I look at weight distrubution as well this usually tells you which masters they study so you know what concepts they will follow. I'm almost done making a full tutorial video on everything stance includes and the pros and cons of each to easily know what they will do. There will also be one for grips and guards. I look at how they are standing wether its low or upright as well. Alot of times I throw what's called assements attacks which tell me alot about them as well, like wether they step with parries. What thier favorite parry is, how far they parried and wether they get strong to week on parries. So usually between studying out of range and the first attack you know what they are likely to do. I think I have a lesson talking about assements uploaded but I'll have to double check. Example most people who fight rear weight low guard don't retreat much but like to try and parry and attack in tempo. Most of them parry out to the upper left with thier dagger and thrust under with thier sword. Alot of bigger heavier fencers do this.

@@novacombatarts This is great stuff, and this video was very useful for me. I will keep an eye out for your videos on stance and guards.

I have a video called how to know where the enemy will go and that has some useful stuff in it as well.
