Agree with you when you added that when they stand in the wrong place (right in the middle) you should go up the line. But, if they stand in the correct place, go cross court with hard, short angle.

What about lobbing it high to the center of the no man's land???
@2MinuteTennis

Not an easy shot from inside the court. Passing shot is the better choice when way inside the baseline. The shot you’re talking about is best hit from behind the baseline.

@@2MinuteTennis If I lob it from behind the baseline then MORE ENERGY is needed to reallyyyy lift & push the ball to the no man's land of the other side. If I don't have much energy then that lob will end up not even crossing the service borders & then the opponent will kill me with a hard smash 🤷

@ tennis is hard. Not sure what else to say. Everything you find tough about tennis your opponents think the same thing. All I know is this, when inside the baseline, don’t lob… hit low down the line passing shots. When behind the baseline, either hit low to their feet or lob really high. Practice these shots and you’ll get better. Thanks for watching!

@@manujohn99 I always found that getting the lob into the court while giving it sufficient height is more difficult than sending it too short.

I also feel a cross-court lob may be easier for a righty, if it is done well, it gives more time to retreat in anticipation of an overhead smash by the opponent. Down the line deep is an option, but at that moment I may feel the opponent could be fast enough to get to it with a forehand volley that has my whole court to his disposal.

I understand the geometry, but I think it matters on the quality of one shots too. On the back hand side, I would find it hard to thread the needle on that cross court with a top spin shot, and a slice is pretty low percentage. But on the forehand side, I can hit those spots with a severe top spin. And because the ball is dropping like crazy it’s really hard to hit even if the guy is there. It’s also hard to redirect a ball from diagonal to straight and often when you do that you’re gonna hit it out on the side when you’re going down the line.

Funny, I tend to go down the line and expected you to say I should go cross court. I do go cross court when I see the other guy is in the wrong place, but mostly with the forehand. If it must be a cross-court backhand, I try a subtle short slice.

I will take my cross-court approach to your down the line backhand all day long while covering the cross court and I promise you I win more than half of those points. The lob is the play here unless the approach is weak. Edit: I guess in this situation because it is not a strong approach but down the line makes more sense.

I feel like if the opponent is that close tho lob is fine too even being inside the court, sometimes that short volley is a good shot and passing would be low percentage compared to throwing up a lob

Brett is standing so close to the net that a cross court lob is an option.

is there really an one-strategy-fit-all thingy? I feel like this should be a strategy battle between you and opponent. If hitting down the line works for you, then the opponent will adjust so that it no longer works for you, then you need to switch strategy again.

@@alsonyang2991 opponents don’t keep track of it while playing. It’s easy when watching a video to think through these strategies. But on court, this stuff goes unnoticed by players.

You hit cross court because in that situation your body position is not coiled enough (parallel to the sideline) to hit a clean shot down the line. Yes I would try to hit it as much to the right of my opponent as possible but doubt if it would be enough.
