There are still country pottery pots on my kitchen and bathroom windowsills. They've been there since I was a kid. They don't smell anymore, but they've become as much a fixture in the rooms as the sinks themselves.

Just subscribed to your channel. I appreciate all the work you've put into posting these commercials. They really speak for the times they were in. The commercials today are so boring and one-dimensional I have to ask why I even have a TV anymore. Having grown up in this time period it brings back memories. Some of these commercials in this particular video are more entertaining than a lot of the TV shows shown today. A loss of creativity and an overall lack of motivation are probably the primary factors.

Ugh. "Ratings Pressure" shouldn't cause a network to cease the programming it was designed to provide. Cable channels in the 80's had mission statements of sorts, to provide specific kinds of programming for specific demographics. A&E's was biographies and history. Nearly all of these cable channels have devolved into playing virtually identical reality shows, meaning that most of the good programming has moved to satellite. Just keep ignoring how shitty the world has become, 2000's apologist.

I agree, I just can't with reality tv anymore. Most of it isn't even "reality". I think the closest we had to reality tv in this time was talk shows. But being a kid, I didn't really watch things geared towards adults.

I recall when MTV first came out with the Real World/Road Rules, everyone lost their shit. I admit, I watched some, but I've grown bored with all the stupid antics and famewhores. I'm by no means uptight, but I can't help but roll my eyes at how obsessed people are with socialite pornstars (Kim K. and Paris H.), teenage moms, and rich bitch housewives. I'm still watching old stuff from the 90s now as an adult. So I am noticing a difference between adult tv and kid tv of that time. However, I don't see the kind of garbage we have now.

***** No kidding. I stopped watching Road Rules around mid 2000s for it was boring. As for Real World, San Diego (2004) was the last time I watched. Reality TV has gotten out of control to the point of everybody has a show.

Scifi (before being ruined and turned into syfy), mtv, vh1, A&E, history channel, TLC, Discovery channel.. the list goes on with stations that have reformatted in some way or the other with the network execs giving the finger to loyal viewers who were the base which they built upon in the first place.

80sCommercialVault I like what you said about reality tv. At first it was kind of interesting, but it's really become too much. I tried to only view the "educational" reality shows, but eventually became just as disgusted by them. What bugs me even more is how that sort of style has seeped into the movie industry. What's next? Newest reality show hit: Let's throw some random kids into a ring to duke it out over the latest Iphone! Shocking things you've never seen before with special commentary by a Kardasian!! DUB DUB DUB! WUB WUB WUB!!

The worst of the worst is the shows you see on MTV and MTV2. You don't have to have a brain to watch those, and they're completely insulting without being in the least funny. While there were a couple things I didn't like about Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Family Matters, they were nowhere near as offensive or obnoxious as the material you see now. What seems to pass as content today is something that is either as violent as Game of Thrones, or something as vomit-inducing as My Sweet 16.

Im Caj Despite how much I hate the MTV channels now, I still feel they're some sort of "rite of passage" for each new generation. I was born in the 80s and didn't get into MTV until the late 90s/early 2000s. I looked back at the shows that were on then and think, "Why was I even interested in that crap?" Then I grew out of it. I see the same comments from ppl who were into MTV 5 years later and 5 years later than that. I wasn't watching MTV when it first came into fruition, but overall I view it as one big frat party. Some people grow out of it and others don't. But it's always catered to the "materialistic youth". That's my view anyhow.

By the time MTV reached it's 30th year anniversary, nobody gave a shit about it anymore. The original MTV generation along with the generation who grew up watching MTV in the '90s have all moved on. But the point I want to make is on reality TV, not MTV. The sad thing I see in most of these shows now is how everything is forced. I think American Chopper started the trend where one character despises the other simply because of the way he "does" things. All the dad was there for was to put his son down, and I really felt bad for his son during the show's run. Then producers for other reality shows started to copy the same formula of one character hating the next, and now you got all these shows where it just feels force fed to the masses in hopes that they will continue to watch. Shows of the early '90s were NOT like that. Granted I did not like Uncle Phil on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but there was never a time where I absolutely despised him like so many reality TV show characters today. Maybe that's why I get a little sad and nostalgic for the commercials of the '90s, because it was a different world back then.
