The exhaust valve seat on cylinder 2 was too broad. One of our viewers explained how we could use the flat side of the valve seat cutters to reduce the head face a bit to improve this. We tried and it made a huge improvement! We also de burred all the other seats to neaten them all up.
One other job we did was to replace the white metal plug on the top of the head with a more durable brass plug. The head is now ready for the valves!

Hello Gordon & Oscar. I am aware this is a late comment and the head job is complete. The nick in the exhaust valve seat is a wee bit concerning because the hot gases could easily burn through that nick. Due to the advent of unleaded fuel, the exhaust valve seats are now fitted with hardened inserts made of stellite material to prevent erosion. If the exhaust valve seats were in good condition I probably would not install hardened seats, because it is only a tractor running at low rpm. I will be faced with this decision in a couple of months when the head comes off and exposes all the potential issues. All good fun and keeps the hands busy. TTFN/CDC

Hi Charles, I agree. We decided to go with it and see how the engine runs, if it will hold compression etc. if not, pulling the head off again is not a massive job. 👍😉

Did you happen to CC the combustion chamber and if so what CC’s did they measure out to?

Hi Ron, I’m afraid I don’t understand your question. Could you elaborate please?

@@WaterhouseForde did you measure the cubic centimetres of the combustion chambers either with a chemists burette or a large syringe? This is done to equalize the chambers by making them all the same size as the largest one.

Hi Ron, thank you, no I’ve never heard of or seen this being done. I’m intrigued though. If you need to get one bigger, what do you do? Remove material from the walls for example?

@@WaterhouseForde that’s exactly what you would do. Remove material so that each chamber is the same in size and shape. This helps with making each cylinder run equally the same. You probably wouldn’t notice it on a tractor, but it’s very common with race engines. I have the same tractor as you and I want to modify the cylinder head and raise the compression by shaving the head. That was the reason behind my question to you.

Hi Ron, ah yes, I've been researching a bit. As you say mostly applies to high performance applications. Our little Fergy will be pottering around mowing paddocks for the most part so much to posh for her - 😉. Good luck with your project - keep us posted!
