The noise of that engine is perfect mechanical music. Delicious!

Great to see a review of a proper S/T. There are so many “ST replicas” out there which are just a back date with later large displacement engine and some wheel flares- not the same experience at all. The sound and the pick up and the light weight are the key features! Great video.

Great coverage of a forgotten 911 :) I suspect the forthcoming 992ST will be another marketing exercise like the recent 992T. Highly unlikely we will ever see another true lightweight 911.

ST means it was pulled off the production line at different stages and sold to racing teams. Sold without wheels,windows, paint ,suspension, seats, some body panels etc. The success of those racing teams led to Porsche’s own homologation RSs in the 70s.

As an unconditionnal fan of the 911ST (especially in 1972), your content is really good. Minors errors are here but otherwise it's really good, the best part was when you mentionned the 901 gearbox and before the PDF manual to create an ST. This car is of course not a factory ST but it might have racing history. Thanks for your content !

I don’t know about that. I fell in love with them in 1963 at age 15 when someone who attended my mom’s funeral asked how I liked our PorschEE. We had a Karmann Ghia so I had to ask my father sitting beside me what this one. I got a 356B Super Roadster but I had never heard of this about two years ago.

Porsche began offering the M491 option (also called the wide body or Turbo Look) on the 3.2 Carrera in 1984 and It remained an option from 84 to 89. The 87-89 models also have the desirable G50 transmission. The M491 option is much more than stretched fenders.

I've stopped at 5 mins to try and get collect my thoughts.. So it's a 911 S that's made as light at the T at the same and you could option to have certain things done to the engine/interior/exterior? So essentially a 911 motorsport touring type car?

So 200hp and 900kilos.. great ratio. Umm full roll cage and proper build mind boggling. Own an 83 e30 2 liter 6. 883 kilo and it has 145 hp. A little beast
@myjunkisstuffgarage967 Жыл бұрын
The ST 2.5 engine spec is 275 bhp @ 7800 and the lightest documented ST weighed 789 kilo. I've read they were clocked at 185 mph on the Mulsanne straight in 1971 ish. All that with no duck tail and no front spoiler. I've got a 72 911E and I can tell you those early cars get very front end light above 130 mph, the duck and front spoiler are definitely needed for high speed, so 185 in an early car is something to wake up the senses!

Fun car, but ultimately, given the ridiculous valuation, a rattly old shed. Honestly, the confirmation bias is off the map with these cars. It's worth so much and the hype is so great, people convince themselves tin cans like this with awful gearshifts and ropey steering are the second coming of christ. To be clear, I do like old 911s. They're a lot of fun. At least they were before the valuations went crazy. Judged on current valuations, they're a joke. Something like a 996.2 GT3 is infinitely more precise, has just as good throttle response, sounds miles better than this old tractor, goes far better, is easier to live with, the works. I repeat, I do like old 911s. But when even something as mediocre as a 70s 2.2S is now £200k for a really nice one, let alone the insane valuation of an ST, they become laughably over valued sheds hyped up by fashion victims. As it happens, the 959 is another good example. It's not a great driver's car by any stretch, but it's still hyped up as some kind of Jesusmobile. It's all very, very silly.
@9WERKSTV2 жыл бұрын
You could have just written "I'm a miserable old bugger," and it would have saved you a lot of time on that essay!
@flat6croc2 жыл бұрын
@@9WERKSTV It was a bit grumpy, but to paraphrase the Incredibles, if everything's great, nothing is, and the hype over old 911s is getting silly, and I say that as someone who really likes them. Some sort of recognition re the ridiculousness of the valuation and the numerous limitations of the driving experience would give any positive analysis so much more impact. As it is, well, the next old 911 will be great, and the one after that and it's all pretty meaningless. I guarantee the gearchange on that ST is pretty horrible, the steering is probably pretty vague around the dead ahead - or maybe not, one can't really say anything from content like this, because everything is just 'amazeballs'.
