No doubt the 911R is the better looking car with the S/T having the 992.1 face only a mother could love. I think for me not having driven either I'm wanting the S/T. Higher redline, more composed, no rear wheel steering so it's more pure in that way. I think for me I want the best that Porsche offers for this era which is going to be an S/T, not something in the middle. If I want something more 911, more raw, just give me a 997 GT3 RS. And the reality is that people who are in these kinds of cars don't often have to choose just one, so give me the best of the new, something supremely capable and yet still pure paired with something older with hydraulic steering, the more involving, more raw 997 RS.

I could happily watch an even longer version of this video - this was fantastic to watch, thank you Lee. A quick question about the driving position for Right hand drive 911s - I'm aware that the air-cooled era 911s have pedals that are offset in relation to the 'H-point'- but is this still the case with these modern 911s too? Keep up the great work!

Take them to some real roads, not beat up flat tiny roads and reassess. Spent 10 days in the Alps with my S/T last summer and can honestly say cars don’t get any better. It’s a car that gives you all the old old school feels but includes modern day touches that we all want. It’s a monster that comes alive when pushed, yet doesn’t beat you up. You can drive the S/T all day as a result because it’s calm and refined when needed, but an absolute beast when pushed. Perfection
@9WERKSTV

Great to hear you're enjoying your S/T. I enjoyed driving this one so much I did 1,000 miles in four days, with all manner of roads covered.
@flat6croc
@flat6croc Күн бұрын
Those were proper roads. If you need to take a car a 1,000 miles away to enjoy it, that's a problem. Personally, I want to enjoy a driver's car regularly, not a few times a year. So, bouncy B roads are where a car needs to perform.
@Porsche311
@Porsche311 22 сағат бұрын
@@flat6croc I have owned and put tons on miles on most Porsches. Those crummy roads should have only accentuated how much better the S/T vs the R. S/T handles road imperfections so well, much better than R. As such there is no way that anyone with any decent driving history could think otherwise. It then further distinguishes itself by coming alive on fine roads like those in Austrian Alps making it without a doubt the best driving road car Porsche has made. Unfortunately most people fall into the trap that a louder car must be better, so on that metric folks might conclude the R is better. But nothing is better to pile on miles than an S/T, it’s so good. Like I said, have had them all so don’t have anything to gain, just throwing my 2 cents in
@flat6croc
@flat6croc 12 сағат бұрын
@@Porsche311 Sounds like you have a bee in your bonnet about the ST. And calling those roads 'crummy' speaks volumes. They're the best kinds of roads for real-world driving fun. Alps roads are a different kind of enjoyment, but speeds and risks if caught etc are a different ballgame. Lumpy, tortuous B roads are the best. Flat surfaced, fast Alpine roads relatively dull by comparison. Scenery is great, driving more questionable. And as for falling into the trap of louder being better, the argument here was that the ST has more aural drama, not less, but that the R was still preferred. Anyway, personally find the R far more appealing. But they are both undoubtedly fantastic cars.

@@flat6croc I prefer the looks of R, the S/T isn’t a beautiful car. But since I can’t see either when driving and I don’t buy cars to collect, it’s the S/T as the better car. Not sure what bee bonnet means

What a line up you have pulled off👏🏻and thank you for filming this comparison too, really informative. Considering that manufacturers have to follow the exponentially-ever-so-stringent safety regulations and fit more catalytic converters to pass emissions (e.g. the just-unveiled 992.2 GT3s), its incredible that Porsche have managed to keep the weight fairly similar between these two cars. One question about the gearing 15:21 - you mentioned that they share the same ratios. As the 911 S/T has shorter gearing than the 992.2 GT3 manuals, does that mean that the 991.2 GT3 manual cars also have longer gear ratios too? Many thanks in advance.

Great comparo video! Count your blessings to have the opportunity. I was fortunate to own a 991.2 Touring from new and took some epic drives in it, which had a lot of the 911R DNA in it. Doubt I’ll ever get to even sit inside an S/T, though maybe I’ll be lucky enough to get a 992.2 GT3 Touring, which A.P. explained has the S/T suspension tuning and otherwise a lot of the S/T bits baked in. It’s funny/ironic that what seems to happen to us all is that we get nostalgic for the foibles of the cars we drove we when first became obsessed with these cars and then, despite progress and evolution, think the latest/greatest has somehow “lost” that “traditional feel”…. For you (and me, too, as we are about the same age), our first 911’s were 996’s, and our “peak” 911’s were 991’s. Yet of course our elder enthusiasts of course think the 997’s (or 993’s) were peak 911.

You say the transmission feel was really great, so I'm wondering which vendor Porsche used to build it? Was it Aisin, ZF or Getrag who built it to Porsche design and specifications. I like both of these 911's, but I like the 997 generation the best. The change on the front suspension was a good move and should have been done as far back as the 996, but maybe the funds weren't around for the change then. I'd have a barn full of selection if the wherewithal existed, but I think we all might. Thanks again for a great comparison video.

ZF makes the PDK for Porsche. I was surprised when I learned that, because they're responsible for all those boring 8 speeds BMW and everyone are currently using. They're high quality transmissions, but still the fairly lifeless feel of a torque converter. Annoys me that BMW is using them on M cars now, they clearly could've had ZF design them a new 8 speed DCT, given the great quality of the PDKs. I'm a manual guy, so I was never shopping for ZF8 cars anyway, but BMW's fairly recently retired DCT was 2nd only to the PDK.
