As magical a career as it was, Wayne always said one of his biggest regrets in hockey was not getting 100 goals that year. Crazy.

Between the N64 video game and watching a documentary on him, Gretzky made me a hockey fan!

This is great for today's generation that never experienced 99. Truly an Uber-Hockey God. Gretzky made me a hockey fan and I loved watching every Oiler Cup win. The funny thing with Oilers in those days, is they didn't do anything awesome during the season, then made opponents look awful during the playoffs.

35 goals in the first 34 games 50 goals in the first 39 games That’s a GPG from 1.03 to 1.28 in 5 games.

@ Yeah, that was the freak thing. In order: 3, 2, 1, 4 and then 5 goals. I bet most people at 34 games were wondering if he could keep up the pace to get 50 in 50. No one had a clue that it would take him 5 instead of 16 games. That is so insane.

Sather and Muckler told him to shoot more, so he did, and became the greatest goal scorer of all time
@spooley16 сағат бұрын
Muck was an underrated coach, Wayne knew him from his days in Minor hockey and picked John's brain often. John had a decent career of his own back in the six team era, played and then coached the Long Island Ducks if memory serves.
@stephenmiller233715 сағат бұрын
@spooley Slats and Muck were a great combo who knew how to get the best out of the young talent that they had at their disposal. I remember both Gretz and Moose talking about how Slats and Muck held meetings with players and financial advisors, and also strictly enforced curfews and dress codes while on the road. They treated their players like men, and expected them to act as such. Combine that insane talent with that kind of structure, and you've got a winning combination.

defences were trying to take away the wingers so he had more room to shoot more... if I remember correctly

@@stephenmiller2337 I don’t know if it so much that they told him to shoot more as he figured out for himself after the disappointment of the ‘81 Canada Cup and after thinking about it over a few days in Florida, he realized that he was becoming predictable and that opponents were anticipating that he would pass but gave him all that space so he decided to shoot more.

If the high goal scoring in the early eighties was due to primitive goalje equipment and techniques, why is it that when you go back further in time, the NHL was essentially a dead puck League up until the early 70s, ?
@GreekboyyD11 сағат бұрын
Statistically, the 1980s had both the highest goals per game ever seen and the worst goalie save percentages ever seen in the history of the NHL.
@theodorebelmont79224 сағат бұрын
After the 1967 NHL expansion scoring exploded in the 70s and 80s. By the 90s the game became more defensive and goalies were all playing the Bufferfly style which made goal.scoring much harder than the 70s n 80s
@ES-hr6vg14 сағат бұрын
Unfortunately Wayne only had 91 goals combined his last 5 seasons in the NHL, which is why the Putin bootlicker Ovechkin is going to break his record.
@GreekboyyD11 сағат бұрын
Gretzky became a compiler. Only 188 goals scored from age 30 until he retired. He needed those cardboard cutouts masquerading as goalies from the 1980s to score.
@ront7697 сағат бұрын
@@GreekboyyD Then why didn't everyone score like that?
@GreekboyyD7 сағат бұрын
@ront769 The highest goals per games and goal totals came out of that era. Just look at Bossy, Kurri, Lemieux, Gartner, Yzerman, Hull, Dionne, etc as examples. 1980s were the NHL's highest ever scoring era with the worst goalie save percentages ever seen. Gretzky only ever scored 188 goals from age 30 and on.
