Detailed 3D plans for this project: kingsfinewoodworking.com/coll...
We have a lot of bird feeders and squirrel feeders and such at our home. I’d like to share with you one of our favorites. This is a squirrel feeder with a lifting lid mechanism. It works by the squirrel standing on it to access the peanuts. It is also a very easy project to build requiring only a single 6” wide cedar fence picket. So it becomes a $2.00 project. And it’s a great project to get children involved with, especially because it is such a quick build. I hope you enjoy it. I should note. That the original concept of a lifting lid isn’t mine, I’ve seen it for a great many years by a number of people. This is just my take on it.
Things we used for this project:
Tools:
Combination Square Set 6" & 12" - amzn.to/3kB2jfW
Dewalt 9ft Pocket Tape Measure - amzn.to/3HzzqZf
Woodpeckers Ruler 24 Inch - amzn.to/3DBUsp2
Festool Kapex Sliding Miter Saw - amzn.to/3DvoCdC
Grizzly Cabinet Table Saw - amzn.to/3wXwzo1
Microjig Grr-Ripper Table Saw Pushblock - amzn.to/3XQ7I1y
Grizzly Drill Press - amzn.to/3jki7n6
Grizzly Bandsaw - amzn.to/3XUUobR
Best Carbide Forstner drill bits - amzn.to/2zdGZ3e
Dewalt Power Tool Combo Kit with 2 Batteries and Charger - amzn.to/3johJUr
Dewalt Drill Bit Set - amzn.to/3YoCVZr
Pneumatic Pin Nailer Kit - amzn.to/40kXlUQ
Dewalt Pre-Drill Countersink Bit Set - amzn.to/40wTMer
Dewalt Jig Saw - amzn.to/3wKizOE
Materials:
Deck Screws 1-5/8" - amzn.to/3Y9ITxk
Deck Screws 2-1/2" - amzn.to/3Y1wkVd

I just finished a similar build. The wood was pre-cut and I glued it together and used waterproof screws. Before that I stained it with tree-colored tint. I then prayed three coats of polyurethane to make it last. I filled mine with peanuts as well. I like the design on this channel more.

Great presentation. Great little build. I'm going to build one now. Correction, I'll have to build 4 or 5 to give some to my children and inlaws. LOL. I'm gonna get a couple of my grandchildren involved on these. Thanks for a great project. I'm sure we will all enjoy it. Looking forward to more videos. Thanks again.

Nice. I built one years ago not as fancy. And when the feeder became empty the squirrels got mad and chewed it up and the plexi fell out, lol

Nice, now to build a bigger one for Halloween, think about it, little kids would love it, just make the back more rounded and wood burn RIP on it so it looks like a headstone.

What a conundrum, I ran across this video 10 minutes after Home Depot closed. I must build this for my hilarious squirrels. It's going to be fun watching them figure it out. Just imagine Oceans Eleven in furry coats. They are ingenious and have been stumping me for years keeping them out of the bird feeders. So this was a light bulb moment for me, just build them their own feeder. Thank you so much for sharing your idea.

THANK YOUUUU for feeding the squirrels...many have a hate relationship with these intelligent critters..".oh. nnnoooo how dare them to eat the seeds for the birds.." come on...people...they have the same right to eat than the birds...making a squirrel feeder will help those who want "Apartheid" squirrels no welcome, no food for squirrels mentality and attitude to give both critters the same opportunity to have food and water and survive. In my property...the squirrels make a mess when eating the bird seeds but from that mess birds eat what the squirrels drop...sometimes the birds make a mess and the squirrels pick up what they drop...so no problem...all of them are eating from the same source and all have their bellies full ...

I love this! I battled the squirrels for years, trying to protect the seed intended for the songbirds. But squirrels are too tough and too wily, so I gave in to their demands, and started feeding them as well. This feeder is perfect for us! Low to the ground, away from the birds, and filled with irresistible squirrel goodies. Thanks a million!

Cedar is a dream to work with and is low price ,,one of the most popular woods for birdhouses and such ,,, I just finish a squirrel feeder box today out of oak but used cedar for the lid to make it lighter ... I'm a sucker for Oak i know it cost more is harder to work with but i love the toughness and the way it looks weathered ... When i finish a birdhouse or Squirrel feeder i throw a coat of Tung oil on it and stick it outside .. Your video is spot on and good advice for projects like this..Really cool design , like the way lid pops up

Nice simple project - totally get the 'good to do with the Grandkids' vibe, even though I don't have Grandkids yet. But Squirrels are seriously smart critters - a good start, but we need to ramp up the complexity, which is great - an endless supply of project upgrades!

Hi - Thanks for posting this, - just made one last week.. Just a side note that the smaller squirrels that couldn't figure it out started chewing the heck out of the lid. I have modified the lid at the opening and added a galvanized metal strip- trying to keep it as light as possible. Will see how this works out. The big gray squirrels have no problem and love it.

You might like to put a screw through the side to pin the plastic in place. We have a couple of feeders of similar design, though with a longer overlap on the lid, which the squirrels use to lift the lid themselves rather than having an automatic lid opener. We feed peanut kernels rather that whole peanuts, and it did not take long for our local tree rats to discover that they can lift the plastic out with their teeth, and scatter the nuts everywhere. Que several iterations of techniques to pin the plastic in place, vs squirrel ingenuity and strength to pull out the panel. I eventually won, but not without at least three feeders full of nuts scattered everywhere, and when I won surprising tooth gouges in the plastic as they attempted to brute force my locking techniques.

nice little project. I made one with my niece some months ago - without the mechanism. You may consider to reduce the height of the front window as the squirrels can get squeezed (you can see it in the video already). Even more if one may jump on the lid while another one reaches into.

Finally built a (close approximation of) your feeder from some scrap materials. Only things I had to buy were the ceramic coated deck screws and the nuts. They found and emptied it the next day, taking close to a pound of nuts! They seem to have buried a lot of them in our lawn, and are gradually eating less as time goes on. Anyone know why? Still not seen them, sadly...

Squirrels are gatherers. They will collect collect collect nuts, peanuts, acorns, etc & bury them when there is a bounty of food. Later, when there’s little food about, they will return & dig up their treasures. It’s best to only feed a small amount (daily), not a bag full. They will clean you out.
