Lifetime Jazz fan here. I was at this game and for a 17 year old kid for which basketball was everything in life, I left this game absolutely devastated.. After falling behind early, it really felt like the Jazz were going to win this one...they had the lead down the stretch but Olajuwon and Drexler were just too unstoppable. Hakeem was the best player in the NBA the two years Jordan left. I vividly remember the Hornacek 3 at the end of the half and the incredible Olajuwon bank shot from the corner with under two minutes left from my seat in the upper bowl of the Delta Center. Jazz just couldn't get over the hump for so many years and they had home court advantage in a Jordan-less season in which it seemed they had every chance to win the NBA championship. But it wasn't to be. The Rockets pulled it out in this decisive game and went all the way. If the Jazz had made one or two more shots, it could've been their year. In any case, they would get their revenge two years later in the WCF when Stockton carried the team on his back in an incredible 4th quarter and buzzer beater to win the series. But this '95 Game 5 will always sting for Jazz fans.

Feel your pain. Much respect to Utah Jazz. I suspect the Rockets knew they had won the championship after this game. It was the most contested match in the whole play-off campaign for the Rockets. "The incredible Olajuwon bank shot from the corner with under two minutes left". What a shot. Notice how Dreem picked up his free throws when the game was on the line. "but Olajuwon and Drexler were just too unstoppable." In that 4th quarter, I have never seen Drexler and Olajuwon play with such emotionless and assassin like efficiency. They were just too cold.

@Johnny Paycheck That was a hard act to follow after seeing the madness in Madison Square Garden, but this game live up to the hype, and I was furious in the closing moments of Chicago vs Orlando when Nick Anderson stripped Jordan from behind. We had the game under control until that moment. But honestly, it was the best thing to happen because it further motivated him to prove that he's still the best player in basketball, and the rest was history.

yes i remember that game. in that year's playoffs the rockets were down 3 games to 1 against phoenix. and came back to win the series after mario elio's famous 3 pointer in game 7, "the kiss of death". it was awesome.

I think if Maxwell played the entire series the Jazz would've won, it probably wouldn't have even gone to a G5. The Rockets struggles in the regular season along with them adjusting without a PF also had to do with Maxwell mailing it in after Drexler took his spot in the starting lineup, it's no coincidence the Rockets started playing more like a team when Maxwell walked out on them.

I’m not sure how they would’ve dealt with MVP David Robinson, but the Jazz seemed to have the Spurs number in this era, so I think the Jazz find a way to oust the Spurs in 7, then beat the Magic in the Finals in 6.

I loved this Rockets team And it seemed like houston always had Utah’s number when they had Thorpe and , Horry to play defense on Malone because H-Town Knocked them out of the playoffs in 94 and 95. The Jazz would change out roll players but for years it was mainly Stockton and Malone and the pick and roll. When Houston traded Thorpe for Drexler in the 94-95 season they still had Horry to slow down Malone but when they traded Horry and Cassell for Barkley in 97 Houston’s Utah dominance was of xd

Seattle was always a tough matchup for them but Houston did match up better when they had Thorpe and Maxwell because they were an elite defensive team they took Sonics to 7 and lost by only a single possession. Seattle had no problem against this version of the team because they lost some defensive presence, Houston's defense wasn't necessarily terrible but they went from having Bulls/Knicks style defense to having Magic/Suns level defense which was inconsistent at times. Kemp could dominate inside more as Horry was a perimeter player, Houston didn't have anyone to frustrate Payton on defense, and Perkins was even more impossible to guard from outside when Thorpe was on the team they at least had someone who could stay on him sometimes. Seattle was really the only team Houston needed an actual PF to matchup with them.

@@FuShengAlex I think Houston did get lucky avoiding Seattle that year but before Thorpe was traded they matched up well with the Sonics. With Thorpe on the floor either him or Horry could rotate on the perimeter to defend Perkins so he wouldn't be open all the time. When they traded Thorpe it was a lot harder to defend Perkins without the paint being left open which allowed Kemp to dominate inside more with Horry guarding him and Seattle got open looks a lot easier.

That's exactly right. The Jazz were tough but they needed a third weapon. Probably a Grant Hill type small forward (Drexler would have been.a good fit). The Rockets had no problem filling out the 8 man rotation. I'm not sure why Utah did. You should be proud that they were as tough and competitive for as long as they were. Especially in the 90s West. I got to say though, for as many grind it out battles they had with the Rockets back then, in the 90s playoffs, the Rockets just had too many guards they could rotate. They just ran Utah up and down the court while the Jazz were focused on Dream. Just not sustainable in a 5 game series. Still, that damn pick and roll. Unstoppable.

Hey, they beat the Jazz 3x in #12 Sally Field's career, including twice in the 90s. There's not just 1 way to be good. The Jazz controlled the tempo w/ a pick-&-roll bitch like Sally Field's career, whereas the Rockets overwhelmed you w/ their inside presence in The Dream + all those spot up 3-point shooters. The 95' series would've ended a bit differently for them in Game 5 had they had Felton Spencer there to play, who was injured at the end of the yr. The advantage for them w/ Olajuwon inside got even wider w/o their space eater inside to use up 6 fouls, and just be an overall presence. In 94', the Rockets were just markedly better, but here in 95', the Rockets got a bit lucky, which is why you play these games in the 1st place. Jeff Hornacek was actually their 3rd weapon, he wasn't Clyde The Glide Drexler at shooting guard, but neither was Kenny Smith Sally Fields at point guard. Both teams actually had their moments against the other throughout actually their mid 80s to late 90s rivalry, and if it was the Jazz who held on in Game 5, you & everybody would be talking about how the absence of Otis Thorpe from a year ago hurt them so bad defensively against Karl Malone. So actually, the 95' Rockets had holes on their 8-man rotation too, but sometime a certain team just get hot at the right time, or somehow yours' gets unlucky at the wrong time, and doesn't necessarily say who actually had the better team.
