Back in the 90s, sleeves weren't a thing. The more wear a card had, the more wins it had under its belt. And when sleeves did come on to the scene, it was seen as dumb and difficult to shuffle - and we ridiculed them endlessly. Now I double sleeve my cedh decks

I have a few sets of the first run of UltraPro sleeves. They are by-and-far the highest quality sleeves that i own! I think I got 'em in '96, after a couple years of lunch table play and rubber bands. They still hold up well; stiff, no tears, no discoloration, doesn't collect grease.. just great! They feel like they are 3x thicker than modern sleeves.
@AlphaCitizen2 жыл бұрын
@@adlorin agreed! Digging thru long boxes, I found what's left of my old Astral Slide deck - Sleeved up in old and filthy Ultrapro sleeves that lasted thru a half dozen decks that played on living room floors, kitchen counters, wherever. Those sleeves definitely feel way thicker than today's. Maybe I didn't get better at shuffling sleeved cards over the years - instead it could simply be that sleeves got thinner 🤔

It's like the comic bubble. People were all worked up buying piles of the Jim Lee #1 4 variant cover splash thing thinking it was gonna inflate over night. Theres an interview with Stan Lee where he says that people paid that for old books was "because they were rare" and it's why I question modern speculation or new product for an old idea. These things are popular or desirable because we played with and abused them as kids. They were cheap entertainment. They didn't last and now we're adults with money and fond memories. But we want those items the way we remember them, fresh and new in our hands, not the attrition at the end where they faded from memory until now. New stuff is bought en masse and frozen in amber. Instead look to see what the kids now really love during their formative years, get those, store them in cryo stasis and hope in 30 years those kids want to relive their good ole days.

I have been collecting comic book since 1972. I stopped in the mid 90's due to the horrible material being published. The market was glutted with gimmick covers and cross overs. They didn't care about writing and artwork. It was built-in "artificial collectibility" The market crashed. Now, 30 years later, it's the same thing but different. The gimmick covers are still there in "limited cover variants". Ok, just because the publishers cut the print runs on certain covers make it more expensive? It's a BRAND NEW comic. Mind boggling logic. I still have the bulk of my old stock. I have gone thru them and know what I have. MTG is the same thing. Just like sports cards in the late 80's.

Tldr; Be nice to the kids at your LGS on game nights, because they will be the ones wanting to buy/open/draft your boxes of today, in 10-15 years. In my experiences, most things are cyclic in nature. Just like you said, now we have money and fond memories that we want to relive. We have seen the same thing with Pokémon, Sports cards, Beanie Babies, Legos, etc. It'll be 10-30 years, and this younger generation will be in the same spot we are; with money and memories. As investors, collectors, players, and hobby enthusiasts, we need to do what we can now to ensure that this younger generation has those same memories that brings them back around when they are older.

Everytime I look at it I get excited and remember opening those starter decks back in 94 and remembering how much fun I had. The thought of all those pack fresh cards does it for me. Part of me wants to open one just to get a sniff of that old school smell. I think this is another reason why the sealed versions of products from this era are so much more valuable than the cards within them. Not just the rarity of the sealed product, but the opportunity to open them and relive those moments from 25+ years ago.

Black Vises, Swords to Plowshares, Factories, Strip Mines, White Knights, Black Knights, Erhnam Djinn, Serra Angel, Light Bolts, Land Tax, Birds of Paradise, Fireball, Wrath of God, original counter spell, spell blast, Armageddon, Mind Twist (you would get an ugly look if you played this restricted card!), Disenchants (main deck) and so many other cool cards would be played. I had some cards that got a bit "sandy" idk what exactly to call it, but it was like a fine powder that was gritty and sticky, but didn't seem like it was made of rocks or whatever, it felt like something synthetic. When I say sticky, I mean that it clings to the cards, not that it's actually sticky, kind of like how flour sticks to a surface, it's like those micro-plastic balls that they put in exfoliating face scrubs, but like actually microscopic. I know exactly how they got that way, I bought a "used" (returned) commander deck on Amazon because I've actually had good luck in the past. Like 60% of the time they'll be scams where people repacked the product, but 40% of the time it isn't. If it ends up being a scam, Amazon refunds it no questions asked so it's essentially a no-lose situation. This commander deck that I bought is the ONLY instance in which I regret buying returned magic sealed product. Instead of being repacked with cards, it was repacked with a fucking bag of this sand or whatever. It had a leak and when I opened it, the sand spilled out all over. This was like 3 years ago and I STILL have cards that I can feel the grit on. The issue is that I can't see the grit, only feel it when 2 cards rub together. This stuff is like herpes, you literally cannot get rid of it. I've tried clean/dry paint brushes, microfiber cloths, t-shirts, very very slightly damp sponges, gently "scraping" with another, swiffer duster, etc. and I could not get it to go away. It gets better, but it doesn't go away. I had received one of those nice ultrapro binders with the side-loading fabric pockets and the sand got in there somehow. Now, it's unusable because it transfers the grit to the cards. Like I get if you're trying to get one over on Amazon, but why try to actively fuck over the next person?

I wish it had been otherwise, but MTG Alpha wasnt given out on the west coast. According to Wikipedia In mid July 1993 "Adkison took a single box of cards with a handful of complete decks to the Wizards booth at Origins Game Fair" which was held in Forth Worth, Dallas, Texas. We can all agree Texas is part of the south lets be honest. In August at Gen Con Milwaikee, Richard Garfield met up with Adkison and his wife and by the end of the convention sold out their 2.5 million cards were sold out. Now some of those were of course shipped to the few stores that got word of them, some of which were on the west coast because I remember the few alpha packs, bu my mom would not buy them because they were the most costly of any cards in the comic and card stores, being roughly 5-10 dollars. I was still into MArvel MAsterpieces at the time, and whatever odd other franchises like Vampire the Eternal Struggle( then called Jyhad ), and having left sports cards behind a handful of years before, I didnt immediately go for the Alpha packs, thoguh I was curious. Nope, it wasnt until a few packs were left next to near empty boxes of BEta and Unlimited, with a couple packs of Arabian nights that December... I was somehow hooked, maybe since I liked those legendary tales from the 1001 NIghts. By the summer of 1994 I had opened packs of Antiquities, LEgends, The Dark, but only so many as they too sold like hot cakes. My whole perspective had changed on cards at this point. It was almost exclusively about MTG. Fallen Empires were 50 cents after no time by early 1996, since they failed unbeknownst to my childhood self. I got tons of them like most people and was happy as a clam :P. SOmehow the local store got Ice Age BEFORE 4th edition, and Ice Age had the first pack art. And that frosted blue color was amazing truly. Got a dozen of those or more, some starter decks of 4th edition once it came out and packs cause it had the Brass Man on the front, whom was one of my all time fav cards too. Chronicles gave me the chance to get tons of cards for cheap once again that I could not get in the 4 Horsemen sets, though some cards were omitted due to their rarities. Homelands was kinda neat, but has a weird feel to them like Fallen Empires did; just a step up in quality, but thats about it with the exception of Baron Sengir or Apocalypse chime which was massively overpowered and broken roflol. MIrage was odd but cool with its African themes and bright artwork, plus more emphasis on Urborg was sooo badass. I startedto take breaks from buying because mtg seemed to have lost its luster. Thus had the golden age of mtg already passed and the silver ge was nearing its middle years as well tbh. 5th edition was ok, but Portal brought me bac into the fray thus leading to Weatherlight ad the "Rath" cycle of Tempest, Stronghold and Exodus which brought true narrative and loveable characters to the franchise. This not only reinvigorated much lost and before nonexistent interest in the games, but was massivly profitable for Garfield and WotC. Yet sadly, all these cards began to give me and others fatigue. Was becoming too costly to keep buying, and at this point video games like PS1 and N64 were more important ( and took all the xmas gift purchasing interest :P). It would be many years before I learned that the late 1990s saw the end of the true "Silver Age/era" of MTG as Hasbro bought out WOtC. Sometimes I would buy a pack here or there, but it asnt until the early to mid 2010s that I really gave the franchise much attention. Sadly the last handful of years have been as hit or miss for MTG as for most franchises elsewhere such as film, tv, comics, video games etc. More misses than hits tbh. C'est la vie, non, mon ami? :P PE@CE mwhaha RANT ENDED!!!

You’re timing is off since Alpha is the first set of any card game from Wizards. Jyhad, another WOTC card game, came out over a year later, after Revised (3rd edition) came out years later. By the time Jyhad came out, the following MTG sets were already out: Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised, Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends, The Dark.

Checking the market prices there compared to English white border edition, cards go for 3x 4x , some over 10x the price. Pretty insane (relatively speaking lol) Black border City of Brass chronicles Japanese is currently at over 200$. English white border version : 15$. Birds of paradise black border 4th edition Japanese : 180$. White bordered English 4th edition version : 10$. Not only are these cards black bordered, In my opinion they look amazing; you have the classic art with the clean 4th edition layout/colors which I love. Hate me or love me, I started playing in ‘94, I remember getting together with 3 others to play a night of “Ironman” magic, we played outside on a most likely dusty table (pre sleeve era) with a burning citronella candle, small container of water and just an empty container all in the center of the table, for those that don’t know what “Ironman” magic is anytime a card would go to graveyard or otherwise get destroyed, the player who took the aggressive action would actually destroy the card by whichever means they choose Fire/Water/Tear in half. I even remember one of the guys ripping a Chaos Orb in a bunch of pieces to maximize the effect of dropping onto the playfield, back then it was a little disheartening to lose a card from your deck to a terminal demise it’s much more depressing to think about now. However you’re welcome to all the owners of 4 horsemen sets by thinning out the overall card pool. I wasn’t completely insane I kept most rares out of my decks and can safely say no duels or P9 were harmed in any of these shenanigans sessions.

I don't have time to watch your whole video right now. I appologize for that. I just wanted to say I have a bunch of old cards that aint probably worth crap. They are well used.

i feel like theres not an amazing amount of people that buy magic simply to collect like pokemon or sports cards which means playability is usually what would designate any givens cards price. besides the reserve list theres no real reason to want older cards unless its busted in a format you play. i know magic has been trying hard with collector boosters and such to increase the card games collectability but i dont really think that having every card be something special makes much of a difference since if they are all special then they become less so. the only way i see them increasing collectibility is expanding the rarities possibly past mythic but then that would anger players just trying to get 4 of a card rarer than mythic to play the game. its very hard to get a happy medium and i think so far magics been kind of failing.

Damned lies and statistics. 95% of those old cards aren’t worth a lot. 99.9% of new cards aren’t worth anything. 5% >>> 0.1%.

Out of 500 copies of Alpha, Rudy probably owns half of them in his basement.

Everything is worthless - unless someone has the money to prove otherwise - try paying the food bill with magic cards - get some crypto and NFT's too -

French cards are almost always the most expensive here on cardmarket in Europe. French people play a lot and I think they love to have French cards.

That's what happens when a collectible doesn't stop producing. Too much to care about for most people. The fun part about collecting is normally the fact that they don't make them anymore!
