As soon as I saw this video I knew someone would comment on how quickly he got the Brinks open. This guy is excellent at picking locks. For the average joe the Brinks is going to be MUCH harder to pick. Just look at how many spools he had to deal with. By comparison, the masterlock can probably be raked open in seconds by a near amateur.

“The Master Lock is going be a 4 pin core with no security pins and that’s going to be very easy to pick.” I learned to pick on that Master Lock. It took me 3 months to pick it open reliably. Although now it hardly ever takes longer than 30 seconds, it goes to show that it can take a very long time to get the feel of picking. I really enjoy this hobby and it’s very relaxing. All because a couple of years ago, I went down the KZbin rabbit hole at night and started to watch LPL and BosnianBill. Thanks guys!

So there is no real need for security pins at all. If it's not possible for your average Joe to just buy the tools and pick it I with minimal preparation (2-3 hours) than you already passed a threshold where no normal person will just break in because it's easy.

@@jenstrudenau9134 Although I spent 3 months trying to open the ML by single pin picking, raking open a ML is generally trivial. Let’s be real, the average Joe isn’t picking a lock at all. But even raking requires the correct amount of tension so it takes some practice.

Any - and I mean ANY - padlock falls to a simple cordless angle grinder. The truth is, I am never - not even once - heard of an actual break-in where the thief picked a lock. (BTW: I'm in my 60's, so having never known of a lock being pick means it's probably uncommon.) Lock picking is a challenge, much like solving any other puzzle. Common thieves just cut the lock or break flimsy doors.

Plus I've got cheap some combination locks (Delta) with exceptionally precise false gates and no way of really working out by feel or sight what's going on. But some of the cheap "fake brass" (spraypainted or plated iron) Chinese locks are good practice because of their less than good-quality insides. And only a few bucks at the dollar stores.

I just bought that exact master lock padlock today at Home Depot hoping to practice. The packaging rated it as a 10/10 security rating. Needless to say it took me (and I have about two hours TOTAL of picking experience, I started last week) about 5 minutes to pick it with a standard hook I have from the Genesis set that my friend got for me as a prank gift. In fact, it took me longer to actually remove the padlock from the packaging. I had to get a set of shears I use to trim bushes to get the damn thing out of the horrible packaging. The key is actually still in the packaging because I gave up trying to get it out, not that I need it anyways.

As a completely new picker, I actually feel like the Master lock could be better suited as a practice lock, or at least a low-difficulty lock. I’ve heard Master locks #1-#5 have terrible pick resistance, which would make them perfect for a beginner picker like me. That being said I DO live in europe, so I don’t have very easy access to a wide variety of padlocks, so maybe lockpicking is mostly suited for Americans.

Yup... Master locks typically have horrible cores, but they tend to be very strong compared to other locks in their class. The octagonal shackle Master uses on their better locks is really hard to get a bite on with bolt cutters. That small difference actually matters. I wonder if the Brinks lock's shackle is solid boron carbide, or if it's just coated.

Hey! I’m new to the locksport community, and I’m just wondering, I know that security pins such as spoils and serrated pins make a lock harder to pick, but my question is why? What about the shape of the pins makes them more difficult to pick? Is it more of a feel thing? Or do the ridges simulate something? What exactly is happening?

To be fair, spools will deter most novice pickers. Masterlock is for some reason just not implementing security pins in their less expensive locks (aside from the LOTO lock which has their strongest core...in a plastic case). I have a 911 which has all spools but was more expensive.

Modern thieves in the Pacific Northwest don't pick locks. They carry small cordless drills with diamond-coated cutoff disk wheels, and just cut the shackles. WHIZZZZ-CLINK! Could you also test how easily your locks are cut with a similar rig? I know from experience that it only takes four strokes with a new hacksaw blade to cut off a Master gym locker padlock! I learned to coat my padlocks' shackles with a dab of grease, and foiled the evil-doers.
