I am very happy to have found this channel. I am from Ontario, Canada, 22 years old university student. I want to thank you fir documenting this, it's youtube channels like yours that have gotten me through university, I may not have the time to go amd do this stuff as much as I like, but at least I can get some entertainment and practical knowledge from others. Looking to go into the firewood business with my dad, we're thinking of may be getting log delivers from loggers because for one it's easier, two you really don't need larger equipment amd three we will be buying a wood lot that we won't be living on, so size may be lacking. Have you ever considered this form of a firewood business? I know it's not at all the same, but it's something.
@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ben, I used to sell a lot of firewood, still sell quite a bit but now just because I enjoy it

Outdoors With The Morgans Awesome, I very much enjoy it too. Only one summer into it myself. Very challenging work without machinery but such a nice break from university.
@redclayfarm64904 жыл бұрын
If your calculating what "the tree is worth" you have to subtract the cost of production and labor to get the log to the mill and the firewood delivered. The stumpage value of the tree is maybe a little over $100

Well that does make a big difference. 12’x19” log should get about 169BF of lumber That will be about $126.75
@bobvanarkel75837 жыл бұрын
My new revised $$$ Amt 19" x 12' = 169 board ft. × $0 .75 = $126.75 in lumber value + 2.5 face cords (rics) x $100 each = Grand toal $376.75

You stack your firewood in facecords without any thing on top. Have you ever done it any other way? I always pictured stacking it in single cord cords and having a tarp on top. I have also seen people wrap landscape fabric around it. Water can't penetrate but air can. Any thoughts on this? I think learning the most efficient way to season your firewood is very important. Ever considered a solar kiln or those German circle stacks? Thanks for all the grrat content.

@dsmith32397 жыл бұрын
Ok, a revised estimated guess in USD, $225.00 for the log and another $350.00 for the firewood......total $575.00. BTW, how do you enjoy that older Stihl chainsaw? I don't want to get into a debate on brands, but I have found the Stihl saws to be very capable and long lasting saws. Prior to switching to a Stihl 025 19 years ago, I had an old Pioneer (the thing was a beast but I used it for almost 20 years). Five years ago, my old Stihl 025 was showing signs of use, so I got a MS250 which I continue to use today. Yeah, it is far from the biggest and the best of the Stihl saws, but I find it is a great saw for what I use it for. Usually cut four to five cords of wood per year, mainly softwoods, except for some birch. Would really enjoy to be able to cut some oak and cherry, but they are hard to find around here, unless they are blow-downs in homeowners yards after a wind storm. Thanks, and all the best.
@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans7 жыл бұрын
All I can say about Stihl is I have had that 036 for well over 20 years and it still runs like a beast, Thats about all I have to say about that

Saw log must be loaded onto something in order to get it to the mill. It's more than the tractor will lift all at once. Load with tractor one end at a time with a chain on the loader? Doing that for free? There is overhead to everything.
@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans7 жыл бұрын
Oh I know there is overhead in everything, we are just doing a comparison on log value vs firewood in this series. I broke down all my costs in a video "can you make money selling firewood"

Outdoors With The Morgans Hi Mike, I wasn't intending to be critical in any way, please understand. My comment was to merely mirror my own observation (and often consternation) that sometimes folks don't consider all which is involved in the product they consume and then either intentionally or unwittingly guilt the producer because of the price. I'm on your side, my friend. Jerry in northwest Georgia.
@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans7 жыл бұрын
Totally understand and didn't take it that way at all.

Why only one saw log? Looks like you could get two or maybe three. Is the mill a big outfit or a d.i.y. outfit? I would think big dia. logs would be worth more per board foot. You can make plenty of firewood out of littler stuff, some of it would not even need to be split.
