Also, Mel Hein should be higher on this list. Being an Eagles fan and having a center/linebacker in Chuck Bednarik as a major part of their history, it's very easy to respect Hein doing the same.

the problem with this is that the game just is not the same. Mel Hein played both offense and defense. He could not specialize like today's players. Today you have these 300 lb guards who are great pass blockers. But, they come off the field huffing and puffing and need oxygen. If you made today's players play both ways they would have to get in shape, loose the weight. Pretty soon you would see 245 lb lineman again. Also, the ball is smaller, more streamlined. Easier to throw. Defenses can't play wide receivers the same way. So, you have a much more pass oriented game.

Bro is one of the best centers ever the only one to win mvp... at the same time he played linebacker and ran back pick sixes like he ran a 4.4 in the 40?
@epeon7
@epeon7 5 жыл бұрын
the game is so different today that it is almost impossible to compare players from different eras. Today, a center would be 285 lbs and much more powerful. But, a center today wouldn't (and couldn't) play both ways. so, if a guy like Hein were to play today he would have to lift to put on weight and specialize in one position. One other comment, I had an older friend who played in the NFL in his youth. He told me the reason why Frank Gifford was such a good player wasn't his running skills or receiving skills. It was, in his youth, he was just about as good as a defensive back. And, when Gifford broke in, that was rare

I'd probably put Mel Hein at center on my all time team because he's the only offensive lineman to win league MVP in NFL history and was also a really solid linebacker on defense. It would be either Hein or Mike Webster. I'd put Lawrence Taylor, Mel Hein, Michael Strahan, and either Emlen Tunnell or Sam Huff as the 4th guy on the Giants Mt. Rushmore. A case could be made for Frank Gifford too but the Giants defense is what carried that team in the late 50's-early 60's. Eli Manning did lead them to 2 Super Bowl wins but one was due to perhaps the biggest fluke play in NFL history other than the Immaculate Reception...the Helmet Catch. Other than a few decent years Manning has been wildly inconsistent. I'd take Phil Simms over Manning
@nujeru99
@nujeru99 4 жыл бұрын
So Eli’s miraculous sack escape on that same play was a fluke?? His throw to Tyree (who had Harrison all over him and 2-3 other Pats defenders within 2-3 yards of him) was a fluke?? Tyree managing time hold on to the ball was a fluke??? Gimme a break. A Fluke play would be the Tuck Rule in the 2001 Divisional Playoffs
