A testament to Walsh was most assuredly that he beat his OLD team twice, who was running the SAME system he designed in Cincinnati. The 99 Rams took all of Coryell's ideas and won their first title with them. Too bad it was SO cold in Ohio when the Chargers were in the AFC title game, a Fouts/Montana duel would have been one for the ages.

The Bengals gave the 49ers a good game in both 1980’s Superbowls. The Chargers might have gone the way of Denver and then later, Buffalo. Regardless. The Bengals vs. Chargers game at the Freezer bowl was a hell of a game.

@@dannygray-mi3xn Dude, that's strange you said that, I was thinking that this morning. The episode of 'A Football Life' about him is pretty epic, I gained a whole new level of respect for him. I love cerebral coaches and Noll really was the first guy of that cloth. Some would say Shula was but he wasn't like Noll, who was a details guy. When he came to the Steelers, he looked at all the film from the year before and identified all the BUMS they had on defense, out of position, no talent, can't learn, don't listen...he cleaned house. The group he brought in was undervalued, diamonds in the rough, intelligent, hard working, tough and HARD to beat.

The first year my Dad was able to purchase our four 49er season tickets was in 1980, I was 7yrs old. I grew up watchin my Niners beat the brakes off of the NFL at The ‘Stick, attended Super Bowl XIX at Stanford University, and the only home games I’ve missed was during my two deployments in Iraq in ‘03 and ‘05. It was an honor and a privilege to watch two GOATS “Montana to Rice” become legends, while Ronnie Lott knocked Rb’s out cold on his way to becoming the greatest Safety to ever play the game. Walsh-Montana-Rice-Lott-‘Mean’ Fred Dean-etc….GO NINERS 🤘🏻🇺🇸

Wish he would have had, who in my opinion has an argument to be the best coach of all time, and that is the great Joe Gibbs. This guy went to 4, and won 3 titles in a decade...and he did it all with 3 different QB's, NONE of which has ever even been considered for the HOF, and really, only a total of 4 HOF players in his entire run(Riggins, Green, Monk and Grimm). Sorry, but that accomplishment is MUCH greater than Belichick winning all his titles with one QB who may be the GOAT, or Walsh winning his with Montana, who was considered the GOAT at the time, or Jimmy Johnson winning his titles with HOF's all over the field. All those coaches are great coaches...but look at what Gibbs did with the players he did it with, that is true greatness!

Hot take: Air Coryell is completely overrated, and there is a reason why he never won anything anywhere. If you want to throw the ball 60 times a game, your defense is going to get tired, and good teams will beat you. Sure, you can beat the Phoenix Cardinals in October, but in the playoffs, good teams will run you to death and maul your quarterback. (Of course, it is illegal to play real football or touch the quarterback. But back in the day, you would need a body bag for your QB in a real football game using that system on a real grass field).
