Great video. Great diagnosis. Wow, what a PITA adjusting the fuel injection timing on those vehicles. Whatever you're charging the customer he should be very grateful. It sort of reminds me of the old mechanic's TV commercials where he states, 'you can pay me now, or you can pay me later'... Thanks for sharing. You're a man with a lot of knowledge of VWs.

Due to the amount of testings you went through, after 1yr 6months, i finally got my 98 jetta 1.9tdi to run the way its suppose to. Recently changed the n75 valve, but somehow the boost temp sensor and needle lift sensor were both wrongly connected the same way. I swapped them around and went to test drive it, and can finally feel the difference driving it all because of your indept explanations.

I love these TDI videos, especially the old 1Z & AHU ones. Great catch with the swapped connectors, I am sure most techs would be ordering a #3 injector and scratching their head why it is still throwing the lift needle code. I'm considering buying a '96 Passat TDI wagon, such cool cars (except the whole door handle issue)

Very interesting I have to say that your very knowledgeable on those TDI’s brilliant how you found the fault with the mixed up connections. Used the TDI Checker on VCDS to set the pump timing on my 2006 LT 35 -2.5 TDI after replacing the belt I must have had 25 attempts before I got the graph right very frustrating but well worth the effort.

I get lucky every now and then. I wish various makes wouldn't use matching connectors in areas that are close to each other.
@davidparker9676 Жыл бұрын
The timing can be adjusted while the engine is running on these pumps. You only keep one bolt tight and watch the graph as you loosen the last bolt enough to change the timing to the desired setting.
@CoolAirVw Жыл бұрын
@@davidparker9676 good tip! Thanks!

Brings back distant memories of me timing my 79 Rabbit and 89 Golf. Was wondering if that 96 Passat has the same system where you check for TDC at no. 1 Piston, then do the cam setup with a flat bar and stick a round bolt into the pump drive pulley to get everything timed right and rock steady? Only thing different is before there were computers in these things , VW wanted you to set up a dial indicator on the injection pump , and of course you had to run out to buy the "special adapter tool" just for that purpose , then you had to loosen the pump bolts and rotate the pump. I never bothered with that, but just trial and error until the thing started and ran without smoking under heavy acceleration. And I would never have thought to check those misplaced wires. Ah.... probably owned by one of those farming kids who think they know everything about VW diesels just because they were brought up on John Deere tractors..

yes it is the same where you lock the cam with a flat bar.

Great video! And the 5 th gear trick also!My question on my 1z Passat also is hard starting on cold days and takes the engine way to long to get to operating temperature. Coolant system has been serviced and new thermostat was installed.Also I was wondering if you can change the glow plug settings for what temperature they turn on and how long and that goes for the coolant glow plugs also? Thanks again!
@CoolAirVw Жыл бұрын
there is a glow plug duration change for ALH but I'm not sure if it works on your model or not. you can google "glow time duration" for vw tdi and probably find the procedure or email me your phone number and I'll txt you a pic of the procedure.

Nice work. Making me sad, got a project in and lost it due to bureaucratic mayhem. If I knew where it went I would have tried to get it back. Just about perfect wagon with a BEW, only thing stopping it was the clutch, took me too long getting it back together and getting the last parts. I just hope it did not get crushed with a fresh clutch in it. Took a ten foot breaker bar to get the axle hub nuts off. Found clutch bearing pushed through the pressure plate, after forcing it that way just to be able to start it. Was bound up like a fully ceased block, ran on first crank sounded like an old slot hit jackpot for a second but smooth as butter. Basically got stolen while recovering from the plague, no registration, on stands in apartment lot and flagged as a hazard. Only needed the axles, and wheels, bumper put back on. Cant stay mad forever.

This is a common question. Mechanics subscribe to services to get schematics and other repair info. Pro-demand, identifix and All-Data are the big ones.

@@CoolAirVw Thank you, yeah I googled it latter with a screenshot and saw you were using alldata. I found a crack but did not download it since its a couple of hundred gb and I had not time for it. Wouldn't charge only 50 bcks for this job. ;) .. i adjusted timing on this old 1Z with engine running and vcds plugged in. Slightly loosen bolts and moved pump by tapping front or back to the engine. The job was done in 15 min.

yeah, thats what I charge for ALH "timing adjust". but I charged diag fee for finding the swapped plugs. It was still a super cheap repair for this customer.
@aygwm Жыл бұрын
Doing this is even trickier when you’re supposed to have the car up to temp. Rotate the engine to line up the pulley, make an adjustment, then start and test again…. Oops it’s too cold now. Terrible! It’s actually easier to do the adjustment tilting the pump while it’s running…

What exactly does the code 38 means in the second field?? I have the needle lift sensor connected correctly, but somehow it just doesnt accelerate the way it should. I tried in on a friend's vcds, and the second field reading wasnt constant. It was jumping around from 38 to about 110 and just keep on changing, but for the most part would stay at 38. And it was showimg the yellow lines on the graph. I advance and retard the pump and still no lines didnt appear. What could be the problem? Could it be a bad injector #3?
@niviuk83355 ай бұрын
I had the same promlem days ago with the similar 1.9 AFN engine: no power under 1000rpm afer change of injector nozzles. I measured needle lift sensor resistance (98 Ohms) and put another one in that measured 80 Ohms. Worked fine. There may be different versions.

@@CoolAirVw English? What does language have to do with what you are FAILING to demonstrate? @CoolAirVw Жыл бұрын
@@guapo4518 Oh, the internet is so tiring. You didn't watch the whole video. If you had you would have seen at the end. At the end of the video we explain and loosen the tubes. With regards to Language, you told me to check a "pump lift"?? since your name is guapo an obvious spanish word and since you said, "pump lift" putting the adjective after the noun" which is how its done in spanish,. Whereas in English we put the adjective before the noun, I assumed you were a person who spoke spanish as their first language, is that not the case? Care to adddress why you asked about a lift pump when the car isn't equipped with one? I asked a simple question, " what did you mean by pump lift"? Of course you couldn't even answer that.
@CoolAirVw Жыл бұрын
And if your asking about the stroke of the plunger in the injection pump that would be how a earlier diesel (non-tdi) would be timed. For instance on a earlier Vw IDI diesel. So that again shows your incorrect. I do have a video on that but that is irrelevant on a tdi where you can check advance and retard on the scan tool.
@niviuk83355 ай бұрын
@@CoolAirVw You can do injection timing on TDI tree ways: the traditional way with dial gauge in the back of the pump, electronically via VCDS or with an diesel stroboscope. I'm no professional and did it several times with the dial gauge on my 1.9 AFN engines (even when I had my own VCDS) - but with VCDS its way less time consuming.
