To give people some ideas about what is possible. I worked at a boat building yard. One way we would make panels Was to lay up fiberglass on a waxed table. (our particular table was an 8 foot stainless steel table with a 4 foot fiberglass extension.) The key is, fiberglass resin will not stick to waxed surfaces (We used car wax.). After cleaning with a solvent, we would use those panels to form up various items like fuel and water tanks. Another neat thing you can do with fiberglass resin is to use it as a glue on wooden parts (no glass). We used this technique to make curved parts like cabin roof or fore deck trusses. We would make a curved jig. We would then rip thin strips of wood. The strips were bent over the jig and secured. Apply the resin in between each layer and build up to the desired thickness. Good luck.

Hey Rob, having worked on bodywork, I would advise to key the smooth surfaces, before applying the fibreglass. This will help to give it something to grip, and stop it coming apart from vibration, changes in temperature and moisture. I’ve seen this happen many times on motorcycle fairing repairs. :)

By "key" you mean to scratch the surface?
@NorthernKitty

That makes a lot of sense. Not unlike roughing up the surface of things you wish to epoxy, to give it "more grip" when bonding to things.

Yes that’s right to make more surface area, for the bond

you can use styrofoam (polystyrene) you just have to seal it up before laying up the substance that will dissolve it with something that neither is dissolved nor permeable, and they do that all the time in the process of making ultralight aircraft in DIY, something I discovered in a book about building them ages ago, and use now for making styrene foam structures then coat with latex water based paint, and this allows me to spray paint them with all sorts of textures and colors using acrylic spraypaint. You do have to make sure there are no pin holes though because the paint will leak and dissolve great big craters into the styrene though LOL

Years ago, I used some fine metal mesh or net, don't know exactly how it's called in English. It makes a net with tiny squarish gaps about 1mm wide. It can be shaped into sheet, bent into curve in all axes to form pretty complex parts. You can literally saw pieces next one another and it can even keep a bridge form for some distance. without having to add any support. I hope the explainations are clear enough.

You mention papier -mache, i believe its possible. There are pros and cons. It depends on whether or not the end product could get waterlogged. Paper has even been used in place of fiberglass. They would glue layers of paper over a form saturating the paper with shellac or other resins. Im going to guess some of the new sprayfoams are quick for curved shapes.

Most styrene melt because of the exothermic reaction of the fiberglass curing process (and the acetone also). Some people go around that with 2 or 3 coats of newspaper with glue or latex paint over the styrofoam.

...... I remember in the past when I attended an overpriced car show seeing the booth with designers building up full sized bodies of concept cars using clay of all things as the working material. I'd guess the clay was laid over a rough hollow form of course , maybe stacked grocery boxes even.

Hey! I got my hand on some old railroad nickel iron batteries. I emptied them, rinsed in distilled water and filled them with new electrolyte. But when i tested them a few times i only got around 25 % of the specified capacity. Any ideas? Any ideas for building ca 100 ah nife cells? I'm thinking something along the lines of rolling electrodes with fiberglass in between. Constructing your own battery with "hanging" electrodes seems like a pain. How would you construct your own 50-1000 ah nife cells?

Have you heard of car panels and other parts and houses being made from hemp? I think it's the way forward. It's natural and cheap and very effective. I thought about growing fields of hemp to sell because all of the plant and flower is useful for many applications and it grows really well in this country in any weather. It's also very good for the soil. Look into it if you haven't already.

.....I was thinking the other day that since the reactors of nuclear submarines have to be lined with tons of lead then perhaps the lead could be the lead as part of batteries but naww . The keels of yachts can have lead as the ballast weight , I thought if ever I built a yacht that the keel would be a good place for the high priced slim form orange batteries . I'll never build a yacht though .
