I’m trying to so this job on my truck it’s a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4.3L 4x4. But I can’t tell what inner and outer tie rods to buy because there’s different specifications what type of tie rods i need rack steering, power steering or gear steering, power steering? Can you help with this ?
@TonyTheTruckGuy2 жыл бұрын
Follow the steer shaft from the firewall. If it goes to a steering box that’s bolted to the drivers side frame, it’s “power steering gear steering”. Rack and pinion is typically on the 2wd versions of those year trucks I believe. A rack and pinion will be bolted to one of the front crossmembers, and the tie rods come directly out of the rack, but the inner tie rods would be covered by an accordion style boot.

I hope you noticed when you got the brand new inner tie rod out of the box that you can see AND access the hex 'nut' at the inner end of the tie rod. And no matter who you are doing the work for it is always better to clean the area where you are working so you can properly assess the situation before you start wrenching. I don't even like the adjustable wrench for this job but not everyone has the bigger open end wrenches. I am definitely not a fan of the pipe wrench....Hope you enjoyed your Baja Blast....

Lmao. It always amazes me when people are clearly watching my videos because they don’t know what they’re doing, yet they feel the need to critique everything. You may have noticed that the hex portion of the old inner tie rod was very skinny. We didn’t have a wrench that would fit and the pipe wrench worked perfectly fine as you can see.

Definitely. Pitman arm and idler arm are other common steering components that go bad on these.

Hi, what type of the grease you used for the end rod?
@TonyTheTruckGuy6 жыл бұрын
It’s not super important so long as it actually gets greased. I like to use either moly grease since it’s higher quality or some sort of marine grease to deter any moisture.

What kind of grease do you use?
@TonyTheTruckGuy5 жыл бұрын
Doesn’t really matter so long as it gets greased. A lot of people don’t like the moly grease because they say it actually wears the parts faster so typically just a general chassis grease or a nice synthetic.

just need a big pipe wrench to remove the old one. I used a 1 1/2" claw with a 1/2" torque wrench to reinstall. skinny zip ties work the best for the inner rubber boot. Moving the rack side to side made it much easier to work on the inner tie rod end.

I called a local alignment shop thinking this was an easy job and wouldn't take very long. The guy wanted $500 to replace inner and outer tie rods! What the hell is wrong with mechanics these days?!
@TonyTheTruckGuy4 жыл бұрын
Sounds about right to me. You’re gonna have about $150-$200 in parts and then roughly 2 hours of labor, likely at $100+ per hour. Plus tax and alignment which alignment alone is usually over $100.
@dudemcgee2564 жыл бұрын
@@TonyTheTruckGuy Moog inner and outer tie rods for 99-06 gm trucks are $109.96 shipped to my door from Amazon and those are the expensive ones. Shops get parts for cheaper than that, especially the crap O'Reillys brand stuff. Mechanic labor in my area is $60 per hour. So at 2 hours thats $229.96 TOTAL not counting the alignment. Add $100 for alignment and we're only at $330, 358.05 with tax. I have a bill from a few months ago from the exact shop I'm referring to, he charges $60 an hour. I'm not the best at math, but I can't find $500 in there.
@dudemcgee2564 жыл бұрын
@@TonyTheTruckGuy Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the video. I just was in sticker shock today when the guy told me the price. I just got done doing the idler arm and bracket, pitman arm, cv axles, stabilizer links, both belts, wipers, and an oil change myself. ALL THAT didn't cost me $500 dollars. I guess I just have a problem with shops rounding up on EVERYTHING which adds hundreds of dollars to the total at the end. I had another shop charge me $780 to change an oil pickup tube seal recently. He wouldn't even look me in the eye while handing me the bill.
@TonyTheTruckGuy4 жыл бұрын
Yeah if you want cheap O’Reilly tie rod ends haha. The ones I listed in video description from Amazon were 35 for outers and 25 for inners for Moog brand. So that’s $140 for all 4 ends. But most shops don’t like when you bring in your own parts and will hike up the labor to compensate because they typically mark up the parts cost since they get them cheaper as you stated. That mark up covers the shop overhead for the parts runners, shop maintenance, etc. I’m also just GUESSING 2 hours of labor, I’m not sure what the actual book time is, it could be more. That does sound a bit high if your labor is actually $60 but around here we can’t find that labor unless it’s some sketchy shade tree mechanic which I wouldn’t trust anyways 😂
