I've been a ceramicist for several years and have experience throwing and building porcelain. They claim to use notoriously unpredictable, traditional wood-wire kilns but must press these dials thousands at a time. It doesn't make any sense to do this, when more controllable and precise temperatures/ramps can be achieved with a simpler, electrical, thermocoupler kiln. The loss in man hours and work volume would make their methods completely untenable when obvious solutions are easier and readily available. I'd also be very skeptical of their claims of 99% failure rate. I'll eat my hat if these aren't marketing lies. Which is a shame... because the watch is very lovely.
@murph84119 күн бұрын
Yes if they were really spending so much time firing in pine wood kilns, having limited people hand making the dials and losing 99% of them why not hand paint the dials instead of printing them as well?
@roykozey79178 күн бұрын
In certain Swiss manufacturers who work with porcelain only one in 300 made are usable so 1 in 99 is actually quite good 😊
@christopherduke89358 күн бұрын
Nah it's just BS to induce artificial scarcity in their branding. I'd bet anything there's no "porcelain master" repeatedly pushing that boulder up a hill, slaving away over his centuries old tools. They'll be flat pressed in dial moulds thousands at a time and fired to spec in either a controlled monitor reduction or oxygenated kiln. Some will warp and shrink at varying rates, leading to some losses... but it'll be far, far less than they claim. I've seen this with other ceramics products in China. The story is one of hand-forged dragon fire and journeyman apprentices. The reality is that of less romantic assembly lines and industrial factories.

Porcelain is enamel, but not all enamel is porcelain. And given the look of this dial I'm not sure there's any kind of difference worth talking about. @rumatadestora6 күн бұрын
It costs 1700£ because it's a Seiko, not because it has a porcelain dial
@theredspoon17635 күн бұрын
@@peetiegonzalez1845The issue with porcellain dials is tolerances at a very small scale. Your granny's tea cup can live with some smaller imperfections (especially smaller variences in material thickness). It's very unlikely you will notice them. With a porcelain watch dial tolernces are much more important. A little too thick and the dial will break when screwing down the caseback, a little too thin and the dial could be shaken around inside the watch. I do believe that they have a very high cull of inadequate dials which ramps up production costs quite a bit. I am not sure of their 99% failure rate but given Seiko (Credor) makes similar claims about their porcellain dials it's not totally unbelievable given the nature of the material. I would suspect a failure rate of at least 70% including all dials which were damaged during burning but tf do I know. What really makes this watch interesting if true tho is the fact that these dials are hand painted. That's something Seiko won't offer for 4 figures and one hell of a meticulous job which requires a very skilled micro artist to get it done right. And honestly, the result looks promising, at least from the video. If your nan's porcellain cups are also hand painted then they would have cost a multitude of industrially manufactured ones as well.

I was interested enough to check 'em out and I was... Confused! 😅 This is to say that the website also lacks consistency (for lack of a better term) as they have two other models: - The Blue: which addresses the crown moan by adding a cabochon and a more complex elements to the dials (there are two), everything in blue (no surprise there) and can only be preordered on kickstarter. The choice of movement and the lumed seconds hand seems to have been kept around (regrettably for the latter in my opinion). - The Origin: the more interesting of the bunch, with a silver case (cool), a crown seemingly at 12 (though no clear depictions of it were included) and three different coloured motifs with a small (sloppy?) subdial with roman numerals to indicate the time. But no information whatsoever on the movement used paired with a significant price bump (though understandable) ended up putting me off. Still, this brand has potential, thanks for sharing! 🙂

I tried to open up the Halcyon page to see what the Selitta one goes for but the link triggered my malware protection and blocked the website. Yeah, that's the Chinese for ya. Nothing changes. Gotta love that Invicta style pricing strategy. Even at $600.- this is sooooo overpriced.

No affiliation here but I bit the bullet on a couple of ceramic dial watches by farasute recently and I'm suitably impressed by the quality. The white ceramic monopusher-style chrono is stunning. (and expensive!) the jump-hour (plain dial, NOT the guilloche) is very understated but reeks quality in a breguet-style coin case, and has a LARGE hour-indicator which is great for gentlepersons of a certain age! It just doesn’t add up, Jody. That said, the Chinese character dial is prettier than Seiko’s by a smidge. Many pocket watches 100 years ago had porcelain dials, and they are really gorgeous. The dial and hands are beautiful. That's the end of my positives. They offer two movements, but both of them are automatic? Why?! If you're going to offer a second movement choice, then make it a quartz option and save money rather than drive the price up. The second-hand lume is bizarre. So, if I wake up in the night, I can quickly glance what second it is?? Not helpful. And the price is just way out of scope for what you're getting. Make it hot pink with black hands and a high-precision quartz ETA for a fraction of the cost, and there'll be a market. As is, I don't imagine there will be many takers.
