@21:44 the reason you capture the pawn is because it's threatening mate in 2 via Rg5 Kh4 Rh6. In puzzles you have to end up in a position where you are up material at the end or mating. That's why some of these puzzles you can't just win a rook for a knight (called the exchange) because sometimes they start up material.

Tip for future videos (I sure hope that there will be more): you can highlight squares and your candidate moves using the right mouse button. Right click on a square to highlight it, right click and drag to draw an arrow. Left click any empty square to clear all highlighted squares and drawn arrows.

Can someone explain how he won the fourth puzzle? I thought the King can just move down one space and not be in check... EDIT: It seems like it just checks for winning moves, not checkmates.

Actualy No. So far no-one has given the right answer. see if you move the rook you can checkmate the king in the fourth dimension. Because it cant move forward in time so you just move the rook through the time dimension and presto chango you win. Its really quite simple Zach.

11:14 - I find a lot of puzzles are aggressive in nature. Most moves, that are not mate or a capture that wins material, almost always involve forcing moves that greatly limit the opponent. I stay away from passive/defensive moves when I do my puzzles.

I am genuinely confused as to how the setup at 1:52 is checkmate. Can't black move the knight at F6 up to E8 and thus block the rook's ability to attack the king(at least temporarily)? Edit: The next one wasn't checkmate either. Are none of these checkmates, and if not, what is the game even testing?

it's not about checkmates, it's about finding the best moves in every board. Some puzzles are checkmate in 1 or 2, some are endgame strategy and so on.
