Always try to factor: h^2(h + 1)/h^2 => cross cancel both h^2 (in the numerator and in the denominator) and you get h + 1. But what is h + 1? :)

At first I did it in my head. h+1. And then I reverse constructed it. [h²(h+1)]/h² (h³+h²)/h²

John, I really like the way you hammer on the basics. I am still a rather poor mathematician. But at least I am getting better. I didn't use factoring to solve this problem. I subtracted exponents. My original answer was simply H. Then, I remembered that any number divided by itself is equal to 1. That's where I got the 1 from.

When he “cancelled” out the 2^2s in his wrong solution, he neglected to note the resultant was 1 for those terms, so the 2^3 + 1 would be 9. Though it is a wrong answer the right value for cross cancelling in addition is 1.

Before watching I think I know which "error" you are talking about: cross cancelling H to the power 2. As you thaught us we can't do that when we are adding fractions. Only when we multiply fractions. That being said I need to watch because I need to know the solution to this problem. ;) I'll come back later.

Why doesn’t he just divide each of the terms in the numerator by the denominator? (h to the power of 3)divided by (h squared) = h plus (h squared) divided by (h squared) = 1 Answer = h+1

The biggest mistake is to forget to add to your answer that h cannot be zero - because the initial expression has a denominator of h^2, and you can't divide by this if h^2 = 0!

My wrong answer was h. Not h+1. Error was when h^2's cross cancelled, since numerator terms were added (and not X or /) the cross cancel yielded 1. If both numerator terms were X or /, cross canceling would eliminate the 1. John is correct again. :(

If both numerator terms were multiplied or divided, cross cancelling would effectively eliminate the 1, but only because any number multiplied or divided by 1 remains unchanged. Cancelling still leaves 1, but that 1 has no effect on the answer. So might as well not be there. Whereas, adding or subtracting 1 does change the answer.

99% get it right. The presenter spends too much time talking and departing from the basic problem, dividing h^3 + h^2 by h^2 to yield h + 1. Thus becoming the 1% that failed to get the intermediate step solved correctly.
