Or: 2 X - 100 = 600 (add 100 to both sides) => 2 X = 700 => X = 350 => the other plane has 600 - X = 600 - 350 = 250 seats.

Plane A has {350} seats and Plane B has {250} seats totalling 600 seats. 600*.5=300. Take 50 seats from Plane B and give them to Plane A. 300+50 is 350, and 300 - 50 is 250. 50 + 50 is the 100 difference and that is not algebra but simple reasoning. So, I am all ears for the algebra.

Greetings. The answers are A has 350 and B has 250 seats. We shall assume that B has X seats. Therefore, A would have X +100, and together they would have X+X+100=2X+100. Moving forward, we are told that the number of seats added together equal 600. However, we previously determined that the aggregate of the seats is 2X+100. That is 2X+100=600, and 2X=600-100, 2X=500, X=500/2=250, the number of seats in plane B. The number of seats in plane A is also 250 plus 100 to get 350 seats.

The average is 300. Then split the difference, adding 50 for plane A and subtracting 50 for plane B.

Here come another worded problem from the time of stean engins: We go back to a train with an engineer and a stoker. As towns are passed, passengers leave gets off. At the last station the last three passengers leave the train and walk away while the locomotive are moved to the shed. The engineer turns to the stoker - Are you ready for a puzzle? sometimes it's tricky from reading the word problem if it's a single variable vs. 2 variables, which requires a system of equations. example: The wording of the word problem sometimes makes it sound like we're solving for two variables when it's really only one variable. Are there any hints you can give to make it easy to identify whether we're dealing with one or two variables?

I kind of did this in my head and came up with the correct numbers. As other say, 350 and 250. This was kind of simple to figure out.

Why do anyone need to make this into an equation. Plane A has to have less then 400 seat but more then 300. 300+200=500 now divide the left over 100 by 2 which equal 50 seats for each plane. Logical answer would be 350+250. Most people should be able to figure this out in their head.

Other than demonstrating using 2 unknowns and systems of equations, why wasn't this solved using 1 unknown? X= plane B, 600-X= plane A. So X + (X+100)=600. Solve for X.

2 planes with 600 seats altogether 600/2 = 300 ... but one has 100 seats more than the other so it's 300 - 100/2 and 300 + 100/2 ... 300 - 50 and 300 + 50 250 and 350

The "solution" is making it harder than it needs to be. Total is 600 A has the same as B plus 100 So the first 500 is evenly split 250 Then give the extra 100 to A making 350
