Awesome job. Very informative and I like that you refrained from using any foul language in the video. Also it is so refreshing to hear dialogue that doesn't have the word "LIKE" used every 5 seconds but instead vocabulary words of an educated individual. Create more videos of the work to the ranger. I do my own repairs as well and you make it easy by telling in advance the tools needed. Much easier taking the exact tools under the truck the first time. Blessings to you and your family.

I make my own scrapers out of copper tubing. Place about one inch of the end in a vice then squish it. Flatten it further with a hammer if need be. The copper won't scratch the surface. Learned this from a great Porsche mechanic.

Nice video... Thanks. I have the same problem with my 2000 Ranger 4.0L and I'm planning to use your video to do the job. I search Rockauto and looks to me that there are different rear bearing sizes. A little confusing for me and I'm struggling to identify the correct rear bearing for my truck. Can you help?
@TOM2RN2 жыл бұрын
I took my old bearing to Advance Auto for a comparison. Based on the code, I had the correct size, but when I got home it wasn’t. I went back to Advance and they gave me the other size listed. Maybe there was a production line change and the ID tag wasn’t changed??
@mrhyperbolic74553 жыл бұрын
37:20 You pre loaded the rear wheel bearing with red and tacky grease? These are the same bearings that will be lubricated with the differential oil... Is that a good idea? I have just loaded them up with the diff oil like you also mentioned but never have I put grease on them. The only time I have greased wheel bearings was for front ones that are tapered and removable. Maybe it does not matter and the grease will just dissolve into the diff oil and no big deal right? What do you think?

Very good video. It helped me on my 2wd 1989, Bronco 2. However, I would like to comment on the varying size of the rear seals. I have a similar problem with my 1998 Chevy S-10, PU. The rear grease seals for the front rotors use a 1997, seal, not 1998. The thinking is when they were assembling the vehicle they were pulling parts from different years. Nothing I can do about it, but purchasing the 1998 seals will not work, no matter what O'Reilly says. Keep trucking.

NEVER TAP IN A BEARING WITH A HAMMER NO MATTER HOW SMALL. FREEZE THE BEARING AND IT WILL SLIDE RIGHT IN.

28 spline 8.8s and 7.5s use the same seals and bearings. You likely purchased the 31 spline 8.8 seals and bearings originally, which has a thicker axle shaft and larger seals and bearings

tom nice video.....does each side/ axle have its own c clip ? seems like it would since you showed how it goes up against the o ring on end of axle and theres 2 axles, just want to be sure...…..and im sure the c clip goes in the same position as it was sitting but just to be sure does the open end of the 'C' face perfectly downward ? thanks
@TOM2RN5 жыл бұрын
Yes, a clip for each side. Just remember to push which axle you are working on toward the center just a tad then remove the clip. Do one axle at a time and temporarily put the straight pin back in with it secured by its set screw put in loosely. If you don’t the internal gears can slip out of place when you bang away with the slider. C clip is held in place by the straight pin. Once the straight pin is in then the c clips can’t fall out. C clip placement up or down not so critical since the straight pin keeps everything in place.

@TOM2RN6 жыл бұрын
Make sure you have turned the gears the way I have it in the video. Reach up behind feel for the other end and push it through. If you meet resistance, jiggle the wheels a tiny bit (forward and backward as well as pushing or pulling in) to release any tension. Don't turn things since the gears will fall out if the pin slips out first. Putting the gears back in position means you might have to remove the entire assembly to put things back.
What is the model number of the new seals amd bearings?
@TOM2RN4 жыл бұрын
Lsucountryboyz225 The best way is to pull the old ones and go to the parts store. My first ones were too large. Measure them before you leave the store. There are variations in the rear ends.
@lsucountryboyz22554 жыл бұрын
TOM2RN i understand, i did but i want to know for sure they give me the right model number for the seal and bearing. I have the same size axel as you my bearing measures 2.25 as well. They cant cross refrence the model number from the old bearings bc its not in their system. I did some reasearch and im pretty sure the new model number is 5707 for the bearings and the number for the seal im pretty sure is 8660s. Like you say they dont carry the old seal with the lip so i’m just wantin to make sure i get the right seal rather than just throwin something in that im 80% sure is the right thing. No disrespect to the employees but i’m sure you know how swirly service can sometimes be at these fast food part stores. Thanks for the quick reply as well.
@TOM2RN4 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to say I could not find the part numbers. I usually order online from Advance and pick up in 30". I searched my old orders and I must have picked this up at the counter rather than order online. I looked at the Advance site and nothing seems to match per se. I believe one of the two was made by Timken. I can't remember if it was the seal or bearing. I just looked on RockAuto and they seem to have them. The confusion was I took the photo of the tag on the tranny case and went to Advance. They looked things up and thought they gave me the correct parts according to their computer listing. Once I got home, I noticed they were too large. Goes to show you not all the data is correct.

Why not use the paper gasket instead of RTV?
@TOM2RN5 жыл бұрын
You could, butI like RTV because it is so flexible. I have recently made two round trips from my home in N. C. up to Virginia to my sister’s place. It’s around 115 miles each way. The first trip was pulling a 4 X 9 U-Haul trailer with a washer and dryer in it. Highway driving as well as some curvy mountain driving in 90 plus degree weather. No issues.
