The key portion is there because those things go through batteries like crazy so you need a backup for when the keypad is dead.
@Ranylyn5 жыл бұрын
In addition to the key being the manual backup when you need to change the keypad batteries, my experience has shown me that these locks appeal most to landlords with multiple tenants living under the same roof, such as a basement apartment with 2-3 bedrooms rented to different people. Rather than go through the logistics of changing the locks and giving new keys to all the tenants every time one tenant changes, they simply change the code and give the remaining tenants the new code. So on a basic level, these locks are more about convenience than security, and I think it makes sense to have further locks behind it (such as locks on the individual bedroom doors in that example, etc.)

LPL, loved the video as always, but there is a larger overarching problem that you didn't explain in the video. These locks are manufactured by the Hilman Group. They manufacture most of the generic locks you find on store shelves including Honeywell, Lowe's Remotelock, Menard's Trubolt/Atlas, Amazonbasics, Brinks, and many, many more. All of these locks are built as cheaply as possible. They all use a kwikset keyway, typically avoid security pins unless requested by the retailer, and always use double sided pins. They can even use the exact same design (compare Amazonbasics and Menard's Trubolt) With market is saturated with products that are built poorly, a bunch of them are just rebrands of the same thing made by the same company.

What's egregious about this is that these keypad locks are often used for short term rental properties (cabin, Airbnb...) that spend a fair amount of time vacant. That's a situation where you really want good security. I'd put a good electronic only lock on the front door, and for "backup" a good key only lock on the back.
@gergelyvarju66795 жыл бұрын
I think there is a valid question about this from a security perspective. Plenty of homes have windows that are essentially unprotected and in a position where most people wouldn't see when the windows are broken. So that perimeter (external walls, windows, doors) of the house is very insecure anyway and for this reason, they have chosen locks that are keeping honest people out, but if they lose their keys are easy to open for the cheapest locksmiths. Anything better wouldn't make their homes more secure because of their windows. Now they want to replace any lock on this level of security (without any security pins are all) with a new lock that provides more accessibility. I am sure this lock would do that job. And if you DO want anything more secure it is easy to pay a locksmith to upgrade this piece a bit and the result would be better than an "off the shelf lock" with some minimal upgrades over this.

LPL, not many people show locks picked while installed. It would be great to see something picked where you can't just hold it in your hand, putting tensioner in the optimal orientation. Lets say you're crouched down in front of a low mounted deadbolt flush to the door with the door frame in the way so you can't use bottom of keyway, tensioner to the right. Throw a few speedbumps in there once in awhile. Maybe the deadbolt is installed so that it is very tight against the hasp because of spongey weather stripping tape. That might be an option for you to make slightly longer videos. Maybe even on a new channel. Give you the opportunity to pass ten minutes regularly. It would be obvious thats what you're doing, but I'm sure the majority of your subs would support longer videos for that reason. Just a passing thought. Thanks for your time .

I'm looking for a lock like this. It would be great if you had a website where you categorized and rated locks. This video is helpful because I won't be buying this particular one, but I still don't know which one is good.

I'm wondering if gerda makes a titan or g1000 lock that requires a code to be inputed in addition... I'm more interested in numpad locks that add an additional layer of security as opposed to convenience

I'm curious as to how the Kwikset version of this lock compares. Or maybe you've already made a video about it. I'll look....

The techniques raking and jiggling appear to be the same and the tools the jiggler and wave rake appear to be the same as well. Is there a difference or are the terms interchangeable?
