9mm Standard Pressure Ammo Tests (Gold Dot, HST, Critical Duty, XTP)

This video gives you FOUR 9mm ammo reviews, all standard pressure. You will see the 124 grain Gold Dot and HST, 135 grain Critical Duty, and 147 grain XTP. I'm using the Glock 19, 4" barrel, and SIM-TEST with 4 layers of denim. The test block is calibrated to be comparable with 10% ordinance gel. Each test includes chronograph velocities, day and night shots, test shot; post-shot review of cavitation, penetration, diameter, and retained weight. This video is PACKED with information; no fluff. Ok, maybe a minimal amount of fluff. The mid-point of the video is a good summary of 9mm ammo testing the past 3 1/2 years; I hope that you find it beneficial.
The original plan for this was to post four separate tests and an overview of standard pressure vs. +P ammo. I decided just to chuck it all into one video (one of my longest, my apologies) and hopefully not put you to sleep.

A shame this is probably your last video but considering all the things going on in your real life it's understandable. bigboss686 11/15/14 - It has been 6 weeks since I posted this video and the itch is already there and escalating. I would like to return to video production at some point within a year or so. The format would change to some degree; very few if any handgun ammo tests, more long gun videos, lots of shooting, high production values, etc. There would be no sense of urgency (that element is essential), but a clearly defined purpose for the viewer's benefit. I've obviously been thinking about it. Will focus on what has worked well and avoid what has sucked. The previous sentence is sound advice! Here are some ammo review channels on my subscription list, in no certain order. I know that I'm probably leaving out someone, and that is not intentional. I watch alot of ammo tests plus read countless articles and forums because I am the epitome of a research geek. Hope this helps. Man speaking as a former Ranger Bat guy... I tend to think I know everything. That being said when it has come to protecting myself and my family I have referred almost exclusively to your data and your videos when it comes to my selection of handgun ammo. It gives a lot of peace of mind to be able to see the way these rounds work in such a detailed manner and not have to play a guessing game as not all of us have the time or the ability to do these things ourselves but it is absolutely pivotal to be able to protect our families and have confidence in our ammunition. Absolutely going to miss having your videos to refer to. That being said I'll probably always carry Gold Dots and HSTs. Take care of yourself

Good to see this information and the compressed format doesn't really detract from anything. It's good to see that so many of the standard pressure rounds are so consistent in terms of velocity. This video directly influenced my most recent ammo. purchasing decision and I'd like to thank you because you saved me some money and did it, as usual, with your great sense of humor. And your editing and attention to detail are just awesome. Who thinks to do night shots with +P ammo. for muzzle flash comparisons and not make it overwrought? You do. Just great. "It's the bullets!" Well, at least for most of it. Please keep making videos if you can. They're really a service to us. It takes a lot of work and careful attention to get videos like these and we appreciate them. :)

Great video. Surprised i hadn't seen these newer ones on the lists. I LOVE the halftime report! Please keep doing that. No worry on the video length; they are packed with great info. It is interesting how the standard pressure rounds seem to hit their velocity figures, whereas the +P seem to fall just a bit short. I used to shy away from the 147 gr 9mm due to the "horror stories" of no expansion (mainly Las Vegas PD, but some others). Turns out they were using the old Olin/Winchester supermatch load. It was never intended to expand; it had a hp primarily to make weight. Allegedly it was made as a sibsonic load for specops ppl to use in suppressed guns. For head shots. Winchester probably never should have sokd it as LE ammo. It IS quite accurate; several of my guns love it. Anyway, all history now. All the quality 147's perform well. These are great times, ammo wise. If only the costs had stayed at what they were 10 yrs ago...... STAY SAFE!!

One other thing I would like to add. Your ammo test videos were always full of facts. That is what I really enjoyed and it makes the information very useful. I just watched a video by a guy who spent the entire video blithering about his opinion and what his "go to ammo for a 9mm is". I am asking myself "does this guy get in gun fights on a regular basis?" or better yet does this guy "think" he gets in gunfights on a regular basis? Anyway, I always appreciated the facts you presented. The preferences you rarely talked about were always given on a very fair, personal basis.

Very nicely done. I will miss your quality evaluations but appreciate the need to keep doing your day job properly. I hope they are paying you well for the time you have to spend away from your family. I read on the Hornady website that the Critical Defense ammunition was "optimized" for shorter barrels, whereas the Critical Duty was optimized for longer, e.g. 4", barrels. Thus, I use the Critical Duty in my Glock 17, and the Critical Defense in my S&W Shield 9. Fortuneately, I have not had to use them to defend myself. Best Wishes

I have been noting the excellent performance of some standard pressure rounds in you tests, but until you broke it down in the "halftime" segment (nicely done), I hadn't realized how close the good ones are to +P. Sometimes superior. As the standard pressure loadings seem to be more readily available, and less expensive, this looks like a good way to go. What's better than good performing carry ammo? Good performing carry ammo you can afford to shoot a lot. Thank you for another great video! By the way, your absence is going to leave a hole in KZbin that will look like somebody took a punt gun to it.

Lucky you have the ability to buy online without going through an FFL and good availibility. In Upstate NY everyone buys all the good defensive ammo up as soon as it peeps up. Most ammo left is standard pressure. I've been seeing more +P Gold Dots in 9mm likely because I and others complained but HST's are seriously lacking, only able to get the 20rd standard pressure 124gr version for $25. We don't even get 50rd sets of defensive ammo. Golden Sabre's go for $44.99 for 25rds! That said I am able to settle on standard pressure Gold Dots or HST's and Critical Duty +P in my spare mag.

For the slight advantage Hst has over gold dot, gold dot has much less smoke and flash day and night that’s something to consider.

Love Hornady but especially the duty line, it’s the ammo all my handguns have whether it’s 9mm, .40 caliber when I had one, and .45. It’s the best ammo I have seen in all my own testing and I’m videos, other bullets will expand bigger but the cavity isn’t as good from my testing

Great stuff as usual! I'd like to see your review of the 165 grain stuff we are starting to see in 9mm.

Too heavy, probably hit 700 fps and not expand at all.
