What's crazy is Lucky Gunner had perfect expansion and penetration in their lab tests with these. They used a Glock 42 with a 3.25" barrel which gave higher velocities which is key. And yes, I listened to why a shorter barrel was used in this test.

I like the chrono setup with the labradar giving muzzle and intermediate distance velocities, and the optical unit giving gel impact velocities. Having the additional useful data is a good thing. If you compare our TCX to the competitions expanding ammunition, we are about the same in penetration, and in some cases more, and in fewer cases, less, but our TCX also expands more in just about every case. You are 100% correct that most all people are carrying the little short barreled .380's so that most realistic test of real world performance. I'd also say around 3" is starting to be the norm in 9mm with the popularity of sub compact/micro 9's these days too. I think you nailed it for test guns for both calibers.

Actually the biggest benefit of the Xtreme Defenders is that the test you want to see will be super boring ballistically. Of course any T&T test is exciting in general😁. In the fluted Lehigh design - More powder creates more speed, more speed creates more cavitation induced damage and penetration. That is why Tools‘ test are so important on traditional JHPs as there is the nasty expansion speed threshold and penetration depth in case of expansion depends on the rate and maximum extent of expansion. Prime example were the max expansion Underwood copper ashtrays he just tested - 5 inches of glory 😂

For real. I think the xtreme defenders are the best .380 round ever invented. If they weren't so expensive I'd buy them myself. They really bring the .380 up to the capability of 9mm, especially through soft and hard barriers. I would rather have a .380 with extreme defenders than a 9mm with some of the lesser performing rounds. Like he was saying, when you have the same ammo, it's not even a question which is better (in most cases). I say "in most cases", because sometimes a .380 can perform better than a 9mm, because the 9mm might expand and under-penetrate while the .380 may fail to fully expand and penetrate deeper, because of that. People want to act like expansion makes a more severe wound... but that's not true at all. The increase in wound size is almost immeasurable. The expansion just stops them from over-penetrating. (It really takes a much more powerful round than 9mm for the transfer of energy from the bullet to the surrounding tissue to do any real damage. ...and I think the only exception to that is when you hit certain organs like the spleen, brain, kidneys and liver).

It's not realistic to use longer barreled handguns to do your testing because the majority of people are carrying as short of barrel as they can get. These types of tests are more true to the common canceled carrier.

Also, the ballistic gel he is using is the wrong one, which is the reason the FBI does not use them to test rounds. They use the 'organic' gel that mimics the human body. In the tests I see using Hornady CD being shot at organic gel, it opens up nicely with perfect penetration.

lol I carry a full size M&P like 70% of the time, the smallest gun anyone I know carries is a G19, guys I know carry M18s, full size CZ75s, G17s. So full size handgun tests are extremely relevant still.

I used to have these if I carried a .380. But after my own tests took them out of the mags. The fickle lil .380 is a tough one to find a balance. Extreme defenders it is or plain old fmj. Good stuff as always 👍🇺🇸

I always carry fmjs in my 380. I'd rather error on the side of reliability. I think it's still sufficient enough. I wouldn't go any smaller though

I like these .380 vs equivalent 9mm test. It really goes to show the difference in the two for common carry sizes. The difference is massive and I’m sure it is in every brand just about except maybe some super charged xtp or something. I’m a fan of the little calibers as you know but for people still learning this is a great example to show them so they know what they’re getting into.

Yeah I’ve seen some disappointing Critical Defense test results before. That’s why I switched from Critical Defense to Federal HST in my 9mm. Speer Gold Dot is another good choice. Equal to or slightly better than Federal HST.

A lot of people with weaker grip and lower recoil tolerance (such as women and older men) are using the Shield EZ. Not that I think it would make a difference with the 380 performance. They are not very good but they are better than nothing (or something you can not operate). As far as your chronograph setup, it is perfect. Easy to see with valuable and interesting information. I like the lab radar. And I like how you adjusted the line contrasting in the video -- looks much improved today. Also cool to see the velocity drop at yardage. I could alao see the extra camera + tripod on the chrono-jelly readout. So, I appreciate the hard work and investment. You really deserve a million+ subscribers. Great test today. Like you said, the results were expected. I'd probably look for the 124 grain 9mm instead, in order to get a little more penetration. But I am not rushing to purchase. Lots of options that deliver this performance.

Back in December 2019, I bought a box of the 9mm version and just ran one mag through my compact to make sure they ran with no issues, I still have the rest of the box, however, I had a bullet set-back on one round, and tossed it safely, the claimed velocity was 1,140 fps, not sure why they reduced it, they were accurate and performed as designed, and on another channel, they were compared with Critical Duty, against a car door with a block of ballistic gel behind the door, they both passed through the car door, and the Critical Defence penetrated half way through the gel, while the Critical Duty went about 3/4 of the way through the gel, If you want to check it out, the name of the channel is, 1Shot, THX My Friend. 👍 🇺🇸

You're right about the 380 barrel length. Most carry are 2.75". That's one expensive FMJ. I wonder how my Gold Dot 380s would do. Probably the same. Bought them a while back so it didn't hurt to bad. That 9mm looked good but kinda weak. Getting tired of all these weak rounds out there. Even some "+P" are coming in weak. With your help we find the good ones. Chrono and LabRadar are running great. Like the stats they're putting out.

Just saw a podcast where Hornady purposely designed the Critical Defense to only penetrate to about 12”. The Critical Duty is designed to pass through barriers and penetrate to 16”

In tests I have seen the Gold Dot usually expands how you expect a Gold Dot to expand but they only get around 8 or 9 inches of penetration. It seems anything loaded with XTP bullets usually performs about the best in these little pocket .380s. They don't get that much expansion so they usually hit around that 12 inch mark if they expand. There is a new micro HST round that performs pretty good too but most the more premium stuff just doesn't get much penetration with the pocket .380s

The 380 was just pathetic, but then we didn't expect anything else. Like you said we accomplish the same thing with an FMJ at a lot less cost per round. The 9mm performed better but didn't get the penetration I'd like to see. I use to really like these rounds but my faith in them has been fading of recent. Your testing shows how the rounds perform in more real life rather than in a controlled environment with non-standard firearms. You be the man Tools, t thanks for all you do. I agree with you to a point about the Critical DEFENSE in .380ACP, but only in a short barrel below 3”! I would have rather seen equal barrel lengths, but above 3”. I do carry a G42 and from most testing that I’ve seen they did function. My EDC varies from .22LR, 380ACP, 9mm and 40S&W. All my barrel lengths are greater than 3.25” or I will not carry. You have justly proven round selection is imperative and Critical Defense is not one for < 3” barrel and neigh is the Critical Duty for barrels < 4”. There are a lot new platforms coming out in the 380ACP greater than 3” and up to 3.5” or more. Your testing is by far the best I’ve seen to date and this test, in my mind, was not comparing anywhere near equal apples! A pun.

Tools I really like the lab radar the intermediate velocities are easy to read. And give interesting data points. Your the best at good solid unbiased Ammo information. I really like the way you are doing the tests now. Also makes me think that I need to turn to my 43 as primary carry during hot miserable weather when its hard to cover things up vs my 42. For the minimal difference in size the power factor cant be ignored. Keep up the great work!

In Europe both Police and Military have used the .380 for many decades. But their guns are a bit bigger, with about a 4 inch or longer barrel. So, for my. 380, I've bought the longest barrel I could find.

I can't believe you hit the steel at 75yds!! Wind was blowing quite a bit in that direction. I still think the red pencil erasers are too soft to consistently expand the nose - olgive - correctly unless petals are thinner. Underwood Defender or Defiant in 380. I do carry the Steinels also & they keep going bang . Good velocity & expansion in 9mm round. Thanks. 👍 🙏 🇺🇸

I wish that my local shop had some Critical Defense in 45 acp back in December. I decided to get a box of different carry ammo as a Christmas present for myself but the only thing that they had that I don't was some Critical Duty +P 220 gr. I grabbed a box anyways and stuffed my 6 round spare mag with them just in the very unlikely chance that I had to put a round through a windshield or side window. I carry 9 rounds of 200 gr Sig V Crowns in my EDC pistol with a spare 8 round Chip McCormick mag and a 6 round Mecgar mag in my mag pouch. I'm going to get my shop to order a couple boxes of HSTs just as soon as I can get the cash. They've got a bunch of standard pressure and +Ps on Ammoseek for about $35 dollars for a 50 round box. I've never seen HSTs fail in any caliber so I have confidence that they'd work just fine in my 4" barrel.

Hello, I agree HST is a fine product and in my opinion the benchmark in most calibers. It is what I carried before Defiant Munitions and what I would choose if our TCX round was not available. That being said, HST makes 10inches in .380 (Brian has a video on it). Personally if I carried a .380 pocket gun, I would want something that gets to 12 and expands along the way 😊.

Amazing how different the performance difference is between those two rounds. I got rid of my only .380 handgun, and I'm not upset about it in the least. BTW, have you ever tested the old school .38 Special +P lead semi-wadcutter hollowpoint? I know others have tested them in the past, but after seeing so many of your videos now, I've come to trust your work. Back in the day, TNOutdoors9 was my go-to for tests, but you've really taken the subject to the next level. Keep up the great work!

Spot on about using the LCP for the test/chrono. I don't have a .380 and some of them (like the Ruger Security 380 and the SW EZ) are pretty cool, BUT I'd carry .9 if I'm going w/a high capacity pistol. I normally pocket carry and I'll take a 5 or 6 round .357 snubby loaded with .38+ any day. I fully admit I like revolvers, but still, that'd be my choice. That being said, I do find .380 jelly tests interesting b/c you never really know how they'll do until you actually see it happen and the results vary a lot more than 9mm rounds.

The Hornady XTP 380 will expand from LCP and Glock 42 barrels (3.25"). It's cheaper than Critical Defense as well. Penetration is 12".

A little off subject, but you’re absolutely right about that Canik MC9. Got one for my wife to carry. Took it to the range and it was VERY accurate for her. Of course, she’s a pretty good shot herself! I’d keep it for myself to carry if I didn’t love my Walther PDP full size 5 inch so much. I’ve said it before but I also love my Canik Elite Combat. 😎👍🏻

I think the LCP is a great gun to test 380 ammo with. Most people that carry a 380 is going to carry a short barrel gun. Great vid. My favorite channel for info about ammo, helped my a ton.

Nice video. I no longer carry CD in my LCP Max. I use Defiant Munitions TCX. I do carry CD in my Bersa Thunder because with the longer barrel, it should expand.

I was really excited to see this review and test. Great choices in the tools- like you said- most everyone that carries these calibers for self defense are going to carry a compact tool. In my experience, Hornady has been consistent and accurate- but I'm disappointed in the expansion- after seeing this video I agree- fmj for the 380 if you choose to use that caliber.

Great Video just came here to cross reference some numbers. I shoot Fiochi shooters dynamic 115 gr fmj for practice and Hornady critical defense 115 gr when its in the home for defense. The numbers checked out good with 1095 muzzle velocity avg. from Fiochi and 1109 from Hornady. Will say the accuracy numbers for spread and deviation look better on the Hornady. I discovered this with my CZ sp-01 from range time experimenting and thought they felt very similar but now the numbers back it up.

You chose the perfect mousegun. What reason is there to carry a 380 with any dimension that meets or exceeds that of the MC9, P365, or Hellcat? The optical in front of the block negates any questions of velocity variances so it's a great addition. Nice job ringing a 75 yarder with the MC9.

It is not terrible in 380, imo its just that short barrel 380 cannot achieve expansion and penetration. Great presentation, as always. I am not a 380 guy, but if I were, the most compact I would go be 3.25 barrel. In all my nines, I have great confidence in Critical Defense. 45 acp and 40 sw too. Civilian carry.

Critical Defense is great for home defense. Terminal penetration without potential pass through. Or in a populated place where you don't want passthrough. Expansion is also great.

Got a question. In my Shield plus, federal punch or critical defense. I have both but carry critical defense.. ? I live in an apartment, incase I happen to have my carry gun during some BS. I'm also very conscious of over penetration, I'm in WA state where a DA might not be as 2A friendly.

I think you have best of both worlds with the Lab Radar and the standard optical chronograph. Great idea. Regarding the Hornady Critical Defense in 380 ACP. I got to say I was surprised by the lack of performance. I mean I knew that some thought you should just use a FMJ due to lack of performance, but i really thought it was one of the better hollow points for the 380 ACP. Man I was surprised by that. I'm going to search youtube for better alternatives. Thanks for the great videos.
