One thing that surprises me about the 9th Doctor is I very rarely see people dress up as him for events like Comic Con. I mean, his outfit is probably the easiest to recreate, leather jacket and t-shirt. Fortunately, whenever I get a haircut, I style my hair like his so I’ll probably dress up like him someday.
@sharpchivers66586 жыл бұрын
Recently I saw someone dressed as him in an event and when I pointed it out to my gf she didn't even got it until I point out that he had the sonic. In my eyes this is a reason why not too much people dress as him, he doesn't have enough of a distinct look so he's not recognizable enough as a cosplay or dress up like this unlike a lot of the other doctors. Part of the fun of cosplaying is having the character you dress up as being recognized by other fan and it's easier to achieve that by dressing up as 10 or 11. Just a thought ^^

I think when talking about “The Unquiet Dead”, it has an issue that so many Doctor Who episodes, even from the classic era, have. Which is that there’s an unknown alien, throughout the episode they’re trying to figure out what it wants, and then it turns out to be evil. Which is a troop done so often that for me, is just kind of eye-rolling stuff. The episode actually presents us with this cool ethical dilemma, of should aliens be allowed to use human corpses if they need them to survive, but answers it by not really answering it at all and just making the aliens evil so need to be defeated anyway. Why can’t for once we have an alien that’s actually misunderstood.

Having said that though Moffat did write some of the best stories in RTD era but he did them so much better than when Moffatt did Moffatt which proves my point about his absolute superiority as a DIRECTOR. It was his genius that made the World re discover Dr Who. I am someone who has watched the show since 1967 when I was 6 and Loved the old show. I don’t know how else to word “no personal attacks.” But clearly I need to find another way to say it. You appear to be equating my shutting down a thread that has devolved with some kind of implied “both sides” mentality. I’m shutting it down because of behavior that I do not allow in my comment section, and remove when I see it. The only reason this even came on my radar was it quickly escalated to insulting phrases that I have set up to be flagged for review when used. You’re insisting I take a side. What I loved about this season when it first aired, and still love about it now, is the pacing. The first few episodes are just FUN ... you get a nice sprinkling of serious moments and world building to establish where the Doctor is at this point in his life ... but generally they are silly and fun, as you would expect from Who. THEN the middle of the series gets serious, and the quality level shoots WAY up ... Dalek/Fathers Day/Empty Child/Doctor Dances ... Four episodes that leave you in no doubt that this new Doctor Who can and will be brilliant. Then the Daleks return for a classic EPIC confrontation, and the Doctor saves the day! Just brilliant pacing and forward planning ... RTD deserves HUGE credit for perfectly understanding what this show should look like and feel like ... he nailed it, and massive success followed.

Having grown up with re-runs of the 4th doctor on PBS as a kid I was interested in checkign out the new series, and when I watched that episode as my first foray into New Who i was immediately turned off and didn't watch any other episodes until well into the Matt Smith run at the behest of my brother who had become a huge fan of the show. So, yeah, it literally killed Doctor Who for me for years! Even when I started going through New Who I was annoyed in the back of my mind with each episode thinking how it wasn't what I loved as a kid, that is until The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances! That's when I finally fell in love with Eccleston! "Everybody lives!" I cried at that moment and the love I had of this silly man and his adventures was rekindled from the embers of my childhood!

Eccleston was great, worked well on a series that was still trying to find it's feet and Eccleston is what made the revival the success it was and is the reason we have Doctor Who now. Eccleston being so good even got Doctor Who through the Dark/Moffat Years.

The episode Dalek almost never happened. Despite being an integral part of Doctor Who the Daleks are own by the Terry Nation estate, as in the 1960s he tried to do his own spin-off show with the Daleks that the BBC never chose to pick up. Eventually they made an agreement with the Terry Nation estate including giving Terry Nation a writing credit.

One thing I love about the Davies era, at least Series 1, is his political satire, e.g the Slitheen two-parter
@alexpotts65204 жыл бұрын
I personally think that the satire is pretty half-baked. It particularly annoys me that the resolution to the story is to nuke the Slitheen. Way to undermine a thematically anti-war message! How much more appropriate would it have been for the Doctor to vanquish the threat through some kind of pacifist means?
@overlydramaticpanda4 жыл бұрын
@@alexpotts6520 It wasn't a general anti-war message; it was specifically satirising and criticising the circumstances of the US/UK joint invasion of Iraq after 9/11 (general public opinion in the UK regarding our involvement in the whole thing was fairly negative, even back in 2005), and in particular the lie about weapons of mass destruction used to justify it - a lie that is repeated almost word for word in the actual episode and one that the Slitheens' entire plan hinges on people believing. Also, having a group of high-ranking officials farting is about as close a pre-watershed family show can get to demonstrate said high-ranking officials were talking out of their arses. The nuke resolution is a silly deus ex machina but the satire itself is fairly on point for what it's actually satirising.

@creidy20186 жыл бұрын
enahsg yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s the whole point of it, because if you run through every single other episode up to that point and in the rest of season 1 there’s always at least one life lost. And it makes sense for him to be so ecstatic because he just came off centuries of war, and then more death even on his new adventures, but he can say that in this one instance, they managed to solve the problem without a single life being lost along the way. It’s such a touching, powerful moment, that’s one of the reasons why the fan base still adores those episodes and Eccleston‘s run, because you would miss out on so many amazing moments otherwise.

The long game 6. Aliens of London/world war three 7. The unquiet dead 8. Rose 9. Father’s Day 10. Boom town

For me separating the top 3 and the bottom 3 was difficult because they were either SO great or SO terrible that I found them hard to put them apart. But that aside, here it goes: 11. Aliens of London/World War Three 10. The Unquiet Dead 9. Boom Town 8. Badwolf 7. Rose 6. The End of the World 5. The Long Game 4. The Parting of the Ways 3. Father's Day 2. Dalek 1. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances

The ones I've tended to rewatch are "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" (of course) and "Rose", which definitely has bad bits, but it has some classic scenes too, and above all it introduces the Doctor and Rose and the whole situation, and these introductory stories are usually good to see again. I'm afraid I'm one of the rare people who doesn't like "Dalek", but that seems to be my personal peculiarity.

I think The Unquiet Dead, similar to the Witchfinders, is to quote yourself "really good until it wasn't"; it's the ending that let's the episode down. It's one of those stories that spends a lot of time crafting the story of "evil genie gets out of the bottle", but doesn't invest much time or thought into the story of "how the evil genie gets put back in the bottle" and I think if it had been a two parter, so that as much investment could be put in the latter as was put into the former it could have been a classic. The thing I feel about Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways is it's actually the inverse of a shit sandwich in that all the good stuff is in the middle, but unfortunately it's sandwiched between a bad beginning and a bad ending. I think the Bad Wolf stuff doesn't make a lot of sense, why would Rose even imagine that breaking open the TARDIS to get to "the eye of harmony" would even help the situation? I'm really surprised at how low you placed Father's Day - Father's Day really moved me. The sci-fi elements are a bit nonsensical (and if reapers turned up everytime a paradox was created then we'd have seen them a lot of times more by now, surely!) but it scores highly on "feels". I think it's comparable to Demons of the Punjab on those grounds, particularly in that both are massive rip-offs of City on the Edge of Forever, but there's no real original ideas; if sci-fi couldn't use a storyline because someone else did it before, HG Wells would have put the whole genre out of business - so I don't think that's a valid criticism. The bit where the Doctor gets back to the TARDIS and finds it an empty shell is a great shock moment. Someone pointed out that there is a cliffhanger at about 22 to 25 minutes into every episode of Series one, almost as if they weren't entirely set on the new format and knowing they might still choose to fall back on the classic series format, and that if they did it would still work. I haven't bothered to test this theory yet, but the theory holds that the empty shell TARDIS is that cliffhanger in this episode. I remain baffled by your love for Boom Town. lol. If I'd done mine that would be down at the bottom with The Long Game.

Hmm, I dunno. You dissing 2005's dodgy CGI is sort of like dissing the classic series' rubber monster suits and wobbly sets. At the time, the CGI was such a huge change from what we last saw in 1989. For me personally I don't get what the big deal is with The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances is aside from the introduction of Captain Jack. In my opinion it's not scary at all, if you want scary watch Blink or Midnight. Anyway this is my personal ranking: 10. The Long Game - Only provides location setup for the finale and shows why Rose is a good companion compared to other people - not entirely sure this was needed. 9. The Unquiet Dead - My opinion of this episode did improve on a re-watch but only from last to ninth, it's still one of the weaker episodes. 8. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances - Sorry but I just don't get it, aside from Jack being one of the best recurring characters/companions and my enjoyment of 9 and Rose dancing at the end, I think this story is average at best. The villains aren't scary and considering this story was written by Moffat, the man who became known for "Everybody Lives!", that moment isn't as enjoyable and that lowers my enjoyment of the episode as a whole. 7. Boom Town - Because this story was written as a writer had to drop out of writing a script, this story appears to have come out of nowhere and that has a negative aspect. However, Margaret's Slitheen was written much better in this story, the scene in the restaurant was great, but overall the story is just average at best. 6. Aliens of London/World War Three - If only the Slitheen's farting wasn't as played up in this two parter and they were written more like they were in Boom Town, this story probably would have been 4th on my list. The stakes are heavily raised, the first indications that the Doctor isn't perfect, Jackie's discovery of the Doctor etc. A strong two-parter but the Slitheen are poorly written in some aspects. 5. Rose - One of the more underrated gems of Series 1, the first introduction to 9 and Rose, the first sight of the modern sonic screwdriver and the Tardis, the use of a Classic Villain from the 3rd Doctor's era, and a perfect reboot from the modern era. 4. The End of the World - Again one of the most underrated stories in Series 1 and modern doctor who as a whole, the perfect first trip for Rose in the Tardis, brilliant introduction to two important characters with Cassandra and the Face of Boe, and the revelation at the end of the episode about the loss of Galifrey and the Time Lords, was unexpected and delivered huge emotional weight. 3. Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways - Whilst the gameshow element to Bad Wolf dates this story in a negative way, the Rose and Jack elements were enjoyable from my side, and once the Parting of the Ways started it was a brilliant story, a good farewell to 9 and solid introduction to the best doctor, number 10. 2. Father's Day - One of the best emotional stories in Doctor Who, good backstory to Rose, personally I wish we could see the Reapers at least once more and I wish we could have this sort of story with another companion in the future. 1. Dalek - Whilst I think this episode is overrated by some fans, and I wouldn't personally consider this to be in my top 5 of the modern era, it was the perfect return/first introduction to the Daleks.
