My daughter's name is Emma, and this is her 9th grade year, as well. BUT, this is my very first year attempting to homeschool her, and my Emma has ADHD, so please pray for us as we begin this new journey. I am so glad to have found your channel 💕💕

My soon to be 9th grader will be using ALEXS for math, it’s an online program I never see mentioned in homeschool circles but was recommended by another homeschool mom and it has been great for him! We’ve used it for 1.5 years now. He went from being very behind to now on grade level.

My 10th grader is working through level 200 literature right now. I loved Solitary Blue! You don't need the previous 2 books- but I did buy them after reading the 3rd since I enjoyed it so much:) Also enjoyed Father Brown, I think it was my sons favorite this year. But the tv show was a little much for me. Haha. Maybe still worth a try as it could have been just me! Apologia Biology its a beast! We're definitely adjusting next time around. Such a fun year!

That’s interesting on the credit layout for the district! At my high school we had to do the dissections (a worm, a fish, and a starfish, there might have been one more thing I can’t remember) to complete the freshman Biology course. I had no idea that schools actually separated them out and assigned credits based on that!

That's how it used to be at my high school as well, but I think they have updated their classes since then. There are all kinds of different tracts. I can email you the catalog if you are interested in seeing course descriptions and such. The guidance department is super helpful 😊

@@Townsendhouse1 I hadn’t thought to try and email the district guidance counselor about the local course info. I had been looking at the general credit guidelines for graduation to help layout a plan for courses over the next few years, but having actual course info sounds incredibly helpful!

We LOVE Shormann Math! But Algebra 1 and 2 include geometry in his course so once you take those two, you have 3 credits.

Yes! I will definitely be sharing this as soon as I figure it out 🤣. Has your daughter done algebra 1 already? I'm still up in the air on math. Hopefully things will calm down a bit in the next week so I can really decide what will be best.

The Tillerman Cycle books can be read as standalone novels, but the series is great ("Homecoming", the first book, was one of my favorites growing up). FYI: The current Fr. Brown series bears little resemblance to the books and has some rather "mature" themes. There is an older series, but I haven't seen it so I can't give you a description of those.

Thank you for the warning! It will be interesting to see the deviations! I'm glad the tillerman cycle books can be read as standalones. Definitely will look up the first one to see if Emma or I want to read it as well 😊

Have you done the Epic of Gilgamesh or the Odyssey and Iliad for poetry? I don’t know if you’ve read it, but another really great literature title that both my Freshman and I are looking forward to reading this year is Scythe by Neil Shusterman.
@Townsendhouse1
@Townsendhouse1 2 жыл бұрын
We did variations of the Iliad and the odyssey a few years ago. When I think of poetry as music I do a much better job of it than the traditional type books 🤣. I haven't heard of Scythe! Going to look it up 😊

@@Townsendhouse1, I hadn’t heard of Scythe either until I was looking at literature options from Build Your Library. Emily’s literature choices are so broad, and not just the “typical” sections. As my oldest really loved Animal Farm, and The House of Scorpion series, I was very intrigued by Scythe. After reading the book description, my oldest son said he thought that it sounded like it would be a good read, so we are both looking forward to it.

@myersplus5 I finished reading Scythe a few days ago, and I picked up copies of Thunderhead and The Toll (books 2 and 3) to read because I personally have enjoyed the story that much! I’m already about 120 pages into Thunderhead and I just got it! 😂🙈🙊

I think that Apologia Biology is a beast of a program. If you have a student that is interested in going into the science fields, then yes, it is a good option. But, there is a TON of vocabulary and reading. I think the lower Sonlight levels are quite a bit different from Apologia. We went back and forth when my older two were younger between Apologia elementary sciences and Sonlight. Sonlight is literature-based whereas Apologia has the one book. I think that their elementary levels are very similar in that there is the textbook and then the either the junior or regular student notebook plus the experiments. Emma is getting through Biology, it just takes an enormous amount of time to get through all of it. But, one thing that I didn't talk about in that video was the USB drive that you can purchase through Apologia - that has videos on some of the more important parts as well as experiments, and that is very much needed in my opinion. We didn't get the USB until right before Thanksgiving, so she really didn't start using it until January when we got back from our long winter break. Things have been much better now that she has the USB drive to help solidify some points in the text.

Hi! Just found your channel. I am a new homeschool mom of 3 (ages 7,10 and 13). We just completed our second year homeschooling. My oldest will be in 9th next year and we are looking at apologia biology. We are a secular family and use Sonlights sister company Bookshark for history. Do you find that you need the Sonlight schedule? We used Apologia Physical Science this year and used the schedule in the book. I am not looking forward to the dissection either lol. It's been a long time since HS biology and college Anatomy and Physiology!
@tracysweatt5401

@Sarah Bennett Did you find Apologia an issue for you as a secular schooling family? I love the look of Apologia, but I tend to prefer a more secular approach to science. Pandia Press offers a truly secular Biology 2 curriculum, and they will be adding more titles in the coming years. The author of Bio2 actually confirmed via email to me that she is working on Chemistry 2 that will hopefully be ready in 2023.

@@tracysweatt5401 Hi! So, not huge issues in Physical Science. I went to Catholic Schools K-12 but religion was separated from all classes except religion class. I find it interesting how Christian resources weave it into everything. Both my husband and I have advanced science degrees and feel that the content in Apologia is spot on for what our child should be learning. My son and I just have discussions if religious ideology is woven in. We teach evolution and old earth, but being raised Catholic I still think there is something else out there so it works. I have told my husband we should write our own curriculum (if we only had the time) he is a PhD in biochem and I have a MS in nutrition and health promotion. I think as the homeschool world grows we may see more rigorous and well thought out secular options. We tried Elemental Science and it was just terrible for both my older and younger ones. I have not bought the biology yet- but I think of all the classes Apologia offers this could be the trickiest. No homeschool stores in CT so I have to just buy it and take a look. Hope that helped somewhat :)

No, you don't need the Sonlight schedule. It stretches it into 36 weeks instead of 34 weeks I believe, plus lists out vocab for easy work that way. But totally not necessary 😊
@tracysweatt5401
@tracysweatt5401 2 жыл бұрын
@@sarahbennett7235, that’s really great to hear. I’ve found it very hard to find a good balance regarding science. Our family is an odd mix. I come from a non-denominational church family, while my husband never grew up in one. I don’t actively teach Biblical lessons, but have brought my children up with God and church faith. Much like it sounds like you believe, we teach old earth and evolution, so finding a really good rigorous science that isn’t a public school textbook is a bit tough. I have always been a big science buff, and had originally wanted to get into forensics when I was younger, so science was and still is a big deal to me. It would definitely be amazing to see some science minded homeschooling families like it sounds like you are, to come up with and put together a course like Apologia but more “secular”.
