This is a really nice demo sir. Well done and thank you. Blessings upon your house. I have always HATED drum brakes! Last job was on a "68 Plymouth Valiant. I was so inexperienced. I got the new shoes on, after a difficult tear down, and could NOT get the drum back on the first side. I pounded and pounded just short of breaking anything. I cussed and swore more then any soldier I have ever met. After a consultation with my father-in-law, he came to the house to assist. Being a man with credible wrenching skills he quickly understood the error of my way and taught me that there was a long shoe and a short shoe. I had no prior knowledge of such an idea and I never made any visual connection when pulling shoes out of the box. I simply grabbed two shoes and wrestled all the springs and stuff back onto the backing plate. Thanks again.

They run a lot better and they break down less than these newer trucks. There are too many sensors, too many of everything with problems and recalls. When you buy a truck like this. Remember, do your brakes. Every five to seven years depends how you drive through your tire rods and your ball joints. I do my work myself. It's pretty easy. I own 2 trucks of the same color. One's a 98 and one's in 95. I have no regrets, I love them equally-more than my wife. You understand? Semper fi

thanks, for the step by step of how to hook the brake springs. This vehicle is about the closest if found so far to match my 88 Buick Electra (trim level park avenue) rear brake shoe spring set up the only difference I can see is the spring kit I have has the top tension spring going to a little short wire/rod that's only couple inches long, special bent, to go from middle shoe hole ( just above the hold down nail) to the hole again in the shoe plating only near the top / larger hole this time. The spring hooks to that. So that make's this video the closes I have found. And all the info pertains to mine pretty much. So I'm going to try putting on the springs pre assembled this should solve why I couldn't figure out how to hook that middle spring, that hooks on the back side. Great Video!

by the time you need rear brakes on your older trucks , I pull the axles and drain the rear end fluid and change out the axle seals , , then install the seals and brake shoes makes installing the shoes much easier and of coarse check that your rear end breather is free , and then flush your brakes , but then I tow a large trailer with my truck .

so what you're saying is you got the wheel cylinder for the 11 inch brakes not the 10 inch. It is a pain in the ass but if the small white spring that keeps the metal tab that locks the adjuster wheel comes loose take the tab off the pin then put the white spring back into the slot in the tab then put the tab back on the pin then pivot it back into place rather than disassemble the whole thing . You can put your retainer springs on both sides before you put the blue spring on the bottom - - after its all assembled pull the bottom of the shoe out of the retainer on both sides at the bottom put the blue spring in place then put the back shoe back into its slot in the retainer first (the one the E-brake is attached to it) then simply pull the other shoe out at the bottom til it too slides into its slot then roll or push the spring into its slot. One other thing some might find helpful you can use a big C clamp or one of those trigger and slide clamps used in woodworking (one of the smaller one handed type ones) to pin the shoe to the backing plate when putting the retainer spring and post on that way it doesn't move around on you when you are using both hands to try to put the spring with the slot cap back on the pin. I also used a cut off wheel on my die grinder to put a groove about 3 teeth in on both sides of a set of plyers this crates a rounded groove that holds the slot cap on the the retainer spring better - - good luck , hope some of this helps

Thanks. Yes, good to know time saver. Seems like most videos on here are for GM11 inch rear drum brakes vs. the GM 10 inch rear drum brakes in your video. 11 inch drum brakes have six lug hubs and 10 have five lug hubs? In addition to the wheel cylinders being different, the spring hardware and layout is quite different for each size. Seems I missed it or you skipped part about removing parking brake lever from old shoe and installing to new show? I had trouble with removing the retaining clip from pin and temporarily lost (lost time looking) the spring washer on the pivot pin.

22:22..that shiny part of flat sheet metal that is part of the self-adjuster, the one that fits on the roll pin in the brake shoe...on mine, when I place it on the roll pin on the new shoes, the tab that is supposed to fit in the end of the adjuster fork, it is not long enough to reach the adjuster fork, so I cannot fit it under it, to hold the adjuster upright...anybody else have this problem? is it maybe the Chinese brake shoes are mis-made, the roll pin in the wrong place?...I cannot figure this out. The self-adjuster definitely won't work properly(or at all) because of it...any ideas? Unfortunately, Chinese brake shoes and pads seem to be all you can get these days..regardless of brand, or regardless of what store you go to...the wheel cylinders were Chinese as well...
@Nord32022 жыл бұрын
Those self adjusters are Mickey Mouse. Sometimes they don't work & the piston eventually comes out of the wheel cylinder enough to leak when the pads wear. I recommend antiseize on the self adjuster threads & gear.

Those adjusters stop working long before the pads wear out. Then the a piston comes out to far, gets cocked & the brake drags overheating. You can hear the brakes at a complete stop hold up before releasing. Antiseize did not work good for me on the adjusters. The adjusting arm is flimsy jumps over the star wheel. Adjusting them is harder when the parts are not all new cause the drum hangs up. The whole system sucks.
